My Mac's gone crazy

My "Finder Is Not Running" .
That's the message that i get when i click on my Finder icon on my desktop .

It keeps disappearing and then reappering every 2 seconds or so . I don't know what might have triggered this .

I haven't changed any system settings or anything like that .
This crazy behaviour happened after i edited a Quicktime clip and saved it to my desktop . I have like 12 clips on my desktop at the moment and the icons keep disappearing and reappearing .
That means i can't access my hard drive at all .

I don't want to reinstall my Mac software cause i don't want to loose all my files . I could do without all the game trailers and such but i have tons of photos that will take up lots my re-writeable CD's .
Thing is , will i even be able to reinstall my Mac software if i can't even access my hard drive ?? :(

Can any Mac experts or anyone help me with this problem ?? :(

I presume you're using OSX?

If yes then I recommend you:

-Insert the original Mac OS X Install Disk
-Go to System Preferences>Startap Disk
-Pick the Install CD as your startup disk and restart the computer
-Once it restarts, instead of re-installing the OS, pick Disk Utility from the top menu
-I suggest you repair both the Disk and Permissions

After you're done simply go to Startup Disk preference again and choose your HDD...

Oh and if you can't access the System Preferences try doing a safe reboot (restart your Mac with the SHIFT key held down) and do it then...

Thanks for the reply .

I reinstallled the software on my Mac and lost everything . I simply had to cause i'd done all that (Disk Repair / Disk Verify) including the Disk Repair Permissions and Verify Permissions and nothing helped .
Everytime i would click "Verify Disk Permissions" or "Repair Disk Permissions" it would get about half of the work done and it would just stop saying it lost contact with the system tools or something like that .

So i reinstalled everything . I've lost alot of music , photos and other stuff but i simply had no other choice .

Anyways thanks for the reply man .

If you wanted to keep the music... Then just make an mp3 CD and then once you're done with the reformatting.

Put the music back on the computer. I was ret**ded enough to compress it and put it on 5 CDs.
