so i recently hooked up my ps3 to my pc monitor using a hdmi to dvi cable, this gives the lack in sound, i also bought the 2x RCA Phono Female To 1x 3.5mm Male Jack Audio Adapter, but they dont seem to be compatible with my fairly old speakers, so i need a new set of speakers that would either work with them or will plug straight into my ps3, any suggestions?

thanks ;)

The stereo audio output from the PS3 is a line level out - not intended to drive speakers. You need some speakers that have amplification built in (most PC speakers do - if it has a power button on it it does.)

How much money are you willing to spend. You can do anything from $20 PC speakers, to $300 HTIB (small 5.1 system w/ receiver - not great quality but much better than PC speakers in stereo setup), to $1000 for Ok receiver and Ok speakers, to $3-5K for really good receiver and speakers, to $10K's for audiophile land.

My guess being 18 you're probably limited to the first 2. If it's PC speakers you go with - simply go to your local electronics store and listen to them and figure out which one sounds the best to you. There's a big difference in quality even at that low end. Same goes for the HTIB solution if you have stores that have them out for listening.
i just want a basic set of speakers to be honest, you guys think this will do the job?
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/1107554/Logitech-X-230-Speakers/Product.html

and how will i connect them? will they have the red and white ports, or will i need to use the jack i bought?
That is designed to plug in a standard PC speaker plug via 3.5mm jack (standard PC speaker plug) so the RCA to 3.5mm adapter that you mentioned before is all you need to hook it up to the PS3.

Yeah they'll do the job and I have a set of the X530's (the 5.1 version) which I must say offer very good sound quality for the price. Very clear high end and nice smooth bass from the sub. The only faults are there isn't much mid range, sounds very scooped but then this is how most people set there sound and the sub doesn't turn down. It's either on or varynig degrees of too loud :)

ohh so the reason why im not getting sound is because im plugging in my RCA to 3.5mm adapter into a 3.5mm headphone port, (speakers are so old)

can anyone confirm for me if the X230s always come with the console adapter?

EDIT: been looking around the net, loadsa people saying they dont get the console adapter with the X-230s, any other suggestions of speakers?
