something i found while browsing at gaf:

The pad isn't quite as classy as you think it will be. The console looks very special. The pad is a bit, well, ordinary. Dull plastic, and, because it's so light, it feels a bit unsubsantial. The new triggers are a bit rubbery too (though do have an 'L4' 'R4' 'click' at the end which we haven't noticed before.
Looks like we have ourselves two new buttons. While holding down the two triggers all the way though the end, it wil click like a normal button. There already calling it L4 and R4.

Here's the full article from psm3:

Ohmgod. It's here.
Just a short post to let you know that, at approx 12 noon, our PS3 arrived in the office. GET IN.
We unpacked it, boshed it on and haven't stopped playing yet. Lots more tomorrow, but here's our findings so far:
1) It's SUPERQUIET. Yes, we've said it before but we're still surprised. It makes less noise than a PS2 - just a thin, quiet whirr of a fan.
2) It gets warm - but not hot. The fan blows air out of the back and out of the top of the machine (when it's in its upright position). It's a bit weird. You certainly couldn't 'fry an egg' on the top of the machine while it's stood on end, but you could 'thaw a bagel'.
3) Loading discs is a quick, no fuss operation.
4) Screen modes up to 1080p are available - but the games we currently have don't offer 1080 modes.
5) It's see through. You can see all the innards through the smoked black plastic exterior
6) It creaks when you pick it up. The panels groan slightly with the weight of the innards
7) The power supply is built it - which accounts for what heat there is and makes it a single self contained unit (as opposed to 360's game of two halves).
8) The menus are very easy to understand. It's literally just like a PSP.
9) Games seem to leave a data folder behind on the HD disc (some kind of swap file?) We played Resistance, stopped, looked at the disc from the PS3 menu and found a 33Mb file on there (not in the save game directory). We played MotorStorm, looked again, and it had gone.
10) The pad isn't quite as classy as you think it will be. The console looks very special. The pad is a bit, well, ordinary. Dull plastic, and, because it's so light, it feels a bit unsubsantial. The new triggers are a bit rubbery too (though do have an 'L4' 'R4' 'click' at the end which we haven't noticed before.
11) We've got code for MotorStorm, Resistance and Genji so far. With more to follow.
That's about it for now.
LOTS more tomorrow.

I'm confused. So, pushing the L2/R2 triggers all the way down and clicking them will have a different effect, and they're calling this L4/R4?

The "triggers" are just buttons with a higher degree of play... I think calling that positive "click" at the end L4 and R4 is a bit OTT, but there ya' go. I have to agree, sat right next to the PS3 console, the pad does look a bit, well, dated... I love the DS2 design, but seeing it right next to the PS3 and knowing it no longer has rumble, I just wonder, "What it?" I think the boomerang was naff, but I think they could have upped the ante a bit and produced something that befitted the sleek look of the console. Still, as long as it handles OK, that's the main thing.

Yea, and im calling it bull****! How about that?

That Phil Harrison guy already showed us all the new PS controller. He explained the new features, but L4/R4 werent mentioned, simply because they dont exist.

I think its probobly something like the gamecube controllers. Press down the L2 and R2 lightly, or all the way until it clicks

The feature is hardly marketable so I can see why no representative at Sony bothers to mention it to consumers. It's probably there and is something developers can use in their game. I wouldn't exactly call them L4/R4 because it would imply they are separate buttons. Since you have to have L2 and R2 pressed all the way down before getting to L4 and R4, they are not a mutually exclusive controls and developers will program for them as if they were part of the same axis. The extra "click" could be used in a fashion to distinguish between max throttle and afterburner in a flight sim game, or a steal vs foul in a basketball game. It has interesting room for subtle expansion that people don't rave about but appreciate in gaming nonetheless. It shows Sony is truly putting in effort to making sure the controller offers the most natural controls people and developers seek in games while still offering a high degree of functionality.

Think about a game like Resistance. You press L2 to shoot, and press it all the way down until you hear a 'click' and it fires off a secondary weapon.
