Sony PlayStation ‘The PlayStation 3 Slim launch Videos’ by TBWAMedia Arts London

Sony PlayStation is positioning its new PS3 as a console that goes beyond gaming in a new TV spot created by TBWALondon.
The high-octane ad, which runs with the endline the game is just the start seeks to promote the console as an all-round entertainments hub, by highlighting that it can also be used to view blue-ray movies and TV shows.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is to launch an £82 million PS3 marketing campaign designed to help the company win the Christmas console battle.

A good start in my eyes.

I preferred when sony had weird dark adverts.

Remember the man with a ducks head?

**** like that floats my boat, and it makes people think WTF.

Remember the whole double life advert? the girl with her eyes far apart? it got people interested and talking.

These adverts are more like infomercials, which i guess is ok considering all the people left over to buy ps3`s are probably the casual gamer who knows jack **** about technology and whats happening on the ps3.

so yeah, wish they advertised the games better, i was quite upset at how badly advertised killzone 2 was....

Edit: forgot to mention the crying baby adverts and the ones with the people staying in a hotel! thats how it should still be done, tradition if you will!

Edit again...and the Golfers vs pornstars advert!

^ You're right it's geared more towards casual gamers who are not really knowledgeable about the PS3 offerings, hence the opening line for the first Ad.

"Play Online for free"

that will catch a few people no doubt but Sony needs to go even further into the games and their Online service imo. only then they will get the PS2 fanbase, showing familiar franchises at reasonable price could make sales sky rocket.

It's about time SONY put out a decent TV ad for PS3 that actually advertises the features well.

The last time we saw that was nearly two years ago when the "Ladies and Gentlemen" ad campaign was on the airwaves. Not the greatest of track records, if you ask me.

Let's hope that all changes. "Start"ing with this new PS3 slim ad campaign.

Sony simply cannot afford surrealism in their advertising campaign like the PS2's 'The Third Place'. I'm not talking financially - the PS3's multifarious features means that it's a difficult console to advertise directly to just one specific target audience. Sony needs a sensible, simplistic approach to its PS3 Slim advertising campaign.

It's a shame but Sony have to be realistic in their current market position. No Wolfman, then.

Sony is brilliant with those abstract ads, but they can get way too out there when they take that angle. I'm an art major, so I honestly love the boldness and creativity in all of them, but often times they don't even paint a clear message to the viewer of what is actually being advertised and much less what is actually featured in the product, and that defeats the purpose of making the ads in the first place.

In Sony's current position, I am relieved to know they are taking a more intelligent approach to their TV marketing. It's not to say that the creative ads of the past won't be missed, of course.
i miss that girl who says 'playstation' at the end with a japenese accent.
I think they should keep that, it's like a PlayStation tradition.

they also need the bring back their Motto. "Live in your world, Play in ours"

YouTube - inFAMOUS TV Spot/Commercial[/ame]

Perhaps it will only be limited to game-specific commercials.
I think they should keep that ["playstation" voice], it's like a PlayStation tradition.
To Sony's defense, they kept a tradition having a certain sound and console name flash at the end of their TV ads unique to the console advertised (at least in the USA). The "PlayStation voice" and PS logo was only used for the original PlayStation ads. PS2 Start-Up sound and PS2 logo ended PS2 commercials. The flipping PSP and "PSP voice" ended PSP commercials, and an ominous sound with Spidey PlayStation 3 ended PS3 commercials until about 3 months ago. Now it looks like Sony has randomly freestyled all facets of their PS3 TV ads to introduce the slim.

I think it just ended up being the first one that is most memorable. Probably because someone actually says PlayStation, which ended up being the iconic brand name and not just the name of the first console, and that the first PS logo ended up being the logo for the PlayStation brand itself.

I think Sony knows its significance now, though. There were two or three PS3 ads Sony did a couple months back that revived the "playstation voice" flashing with "PS3" for the end. At least one of them made it onto television (the inFAMOUS commercial. But after looking at this new PS3 slim ad, I hope they continue the throwback ending as seen in the inFAMOUS commercial, because consistency is a great tool to make a commercial's product recognizable.

One has to wonder with Apple, Nintendo and even Microsoft going the all colorful route in their advertising campaigns Sony should have done a total 360 degree and gone for that dark, evil, obscure, weird and quite frankly scary advertising that made the PS2 what it was. I remember those adverts so vividly; when the blue and black was in; when that PS2 logo looked like it had beamed in from outer space and then those screams of PlayStation 2; The Third Place. I was looking forward to that edgy stuff to really differentiate from the competitors as mentioned above. All of those have gone for casual, colorful almost slightly childish (those Apple ads just pander and make you feel like a child) look. Anyway these are not bad; just I do not know...was expecting more of an impression...of course we have not seen all of them yet...

Edit* Just watched it again, WTF is going on with the Red? No way should Red be included in advertising...That needs to go to Blue or even White for more neutrality. Also it seems these adverts derive their inspiration from those PSP adverts 'the whole world in your hands' as shown below;

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfH94lsE__g"]YouTube - PSP 3000 Ad 'Whole World In Your Hands'[/ame]

Also this was the video I was referring to in terms of the PS2;

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h28Kbdfmvbk"]YouTube - PlayStation 2 commercial[/ame]

Now THAT is what you call cutting edge advertising.
Sony need Apple's iPhone Marketing. :snicker
lol

Whats great about the PS3,

Is that if you want to browse the web, there's a service for that.

If you want to download and watch movies without leaving the couch, there's a service for that.

If you want a 3d social networking platform, there's a service for that.

If you want to play games online for free, yep, there's even a service for that.

There's a service for just about... anything on the PS3.
Is pretty much how that would go.

here is the problem with the weird commercials...they don't tell you JACK about the PS3...and frankly the hardcore gamers are already onboard...its the casual gamers that Sony needs to hook now...they need to see prices...fun games...bluray...free online gaming...things like that...

you hit the nail on the head but instead of "service for that" which sounds like you have to pay extra for the service, we could replace it with "we got something for that"

The end it with "features all included in the PS3"

*PlayStation voice*

THIS advert is what they should do but just updated.
Blew me away completely and i'm pretty sure lots of people would be encouraged to buy one.

As much as I love that commercial, it may not entice the casual gamer to got out and by one.
that Ad was more geared towards the hardcore fan base Sony need something simple right now. they're introducing themselves to people who play games like once a week, people who don't know what Blu Ray is and those who never played online before. the PS2 niche of the market, they need something like the iPhone Ad it can't get any simpler than that.

The new commercials do a good job of informing the 'general' population about the PS3 and the most important thing is that they state the new price at the end. If they get enough airplay then they should have a decent impact.
And where are the games? :

Bit too casual, I wouldn't mind some more game orientated adverts aswell. Still good ads though :]
Did you watch the commercial?

Singstar
Buzz

both are EU's big games

Little Big Planet which has returned to the charts

All 3 games are mentioned on top of "free online" AND the console itself, which is what the commercial is for in the first place

So we have:
-mention of free online
-good shot of the hardware-
-2 big EU games mentioned
-1 game for the more casual
-new price mentioned.

IMO, the commercial delivers on all "important" fronts.

Looks like they only do that for American ads - here in Europe its that red wave that goes round the PS3

Best motto was this:

Fun Anyone?
PlayStation 2

Simple but very effective - PS2 definitely had the biggest fun factor out of all the last gen systems
