I think it was really two major factors. The first was the performance and bugginess of the old site which people had to endure for years and which got worse and worse. Several attempts were started to update the site but most just petered off into nothing, often with the stated reason being there wasn't enough money. It just took too long to get it to where it is now and we lost people during that time.

The second, and probably the most significant, reason was the emergence of social media. There was no twitter, youtube, Reddit, Medium and even Facebook back when this site started. Forums were king (an emergence from the old dial up BBS). As time moved on and social media trends changed people moved on too and started using those new channels.

The leadership team have always, in my book, been pretty good. We've all had our favourites over the years, but none of them in my book have ever been bad.
There are always leadership problems. I'm with Tidal here and I think people just moved on. It is hardly the first and it is not going to be the last forum to reach high and then decline. The same happened to PSPupdates.qj.net back in the day, which was what led me to PSU.

I'm just happy that I was here when it all happened. :)

I agree. What I miss the most are those lively PlayStation exclusive screenshot sharing threads. Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Driveclub etc. When those big games released and people would point out the different attention to detail, animated GIFs included. Or even just to compare pre-release footage to the final product. I very much doubt we'll have all of the different genre cliques, clan groups and such that made PSU unique because like you say people have moved on.

It does feel like the previews and lead up to the next generation are the most active the forums will ever get. So I'm really looking forward to the reveal of the PS5. And I can't wait to see what improvements we'll see with PSVR 2.

Absolutely! People like Loudninja (for PS) and Aquanox (for Xbox) used to do some incredible threads. I even did a couple myself, but those two were the masters!

There were some rules which I actually think were good for the time - like you couldn't do a one word reply, or just post an emoji. This meant that every reply in a thread actively contributed something. There were strict rules around attribution to the article's source, again something that made this forum feel like a very grown up and gaming intelligent community.

I know some people miss the 'banter', but that's more a case of looking back with a certain romanticism. The reality was some of them were brutal and there were some ugly episodes where people would work hard to get someone banned. I didn't like that, but for the most part I think the forum admins and SMEs did a very good job during a period that was highly emotive.

I miss great people like Duffman, Loudninja, Aquanox, Lefein (he hated me, but I loved bantering with him), any many many other greats

Believe it or not, every ban that happened was discussed prior to with all the staff. We decided as a group, nearly all the time, what was going to happen to a person. We presented evidence in staff forums proving the point, justifying the ban. LIke it or not, that's what happened. I am not going to say I was right, or wrong 100%. I made mistakes, but no one will be able to tell you that I didn't have my heart and soul into trying what I could to make the place succeed. It's fun to bash and rebel against those in power at the time, even more fun when they get removed from power.

I just couldn't abide by the insipid stupid fanboy shit. Still can't. If a person chose to play xbox and wanted to use our forums here to discuss it, in the proper forum, they should have been able to. Sadly, that section got trolled into oblivion. Hence a lot of bans. Rarely did I, or any other staff at the time ban someone who was in a PS forum and talked smack.

It is OK to be a PS fan, but if you choose to revel in the failures of others to do so, then that makes a person a fanboy and that is childish behaviour. Extoll the virtues of a console to the heavens. Proclaim graphical superiority because some pixel nut showed a 2000% blowup of how jagged a bush is. Fine. But you come into a xbox or PS forum and start bashing the shit out of the rival console, then you are compensating and trying to justify your purchase. A lot of people get subconsciously jealous when even the slightest nod is given to the rival console. I remember a famous falling out on who had the best grass in RDR. Fucking seriously, like 15 pages of forum posts on why the PS3 version had better grass. Not if it was a better playing game, better resolution, etc... but grass.

You blame me? LOL that's pretty good. I spent countless hours trying to ensure that the entire site, regardless of the console was a safe place to have fun and discuss games. I discussed options with Mr. Bishop all the time on how to proceed. Even at one point agreeing with him when money was available that we were going to separate all other console discussions to another site and leave PSU as a sole PS site. It never came to be though.

What killed discussions here was literally the mean ass spirit of people who couldn't stand that I didn't tow the PS line as my sole console. I just couldn't when i played and enhojed both (and still do). Just to prove a point? Even going hardcore PS fan site when Ghost took over didn't draw the people back in. Discussions went toxic even faster because XBox discussion was absolutely mocked and trolled. PS threads gained a little steam, but the decline that started with the CM before me, just keep going.

Yes, if it makes you sleep better at night, I am an xbox gamer. As well as a PS, Nintendo, Retropie, and whatever else I want to play. I play games, I buy the consoles so I get all the exlcusives. I have admitted hundreds of times in the past that the only reason I game on xbox more than PS is the controller is more comfortable. So i guess by tranistive property you can run off and proclaim because CUGUY games on xbox because of his hands, that MS killed the forums and label me an xbot :) Enjoy
You gotta relax dude. You're making this all about Xbox v. PlayStation. Some people are more passionate than others (which is completely OKAY and should have been.) You're acting as if choosing to play on Xbox and/or PlayStation is the same as choosing a political party or religion. Nobody cares that much. I think you took it a little too seriously.

This place didn't go down because there was a lot of hate for Xbox or PlayStation (not as big as you're making it to be), it was simply due to people having other options. Times change. Things change.

No, I don't think that was it. Are you really saying that because of YOU discussions died on this forum?

It's been 13 years and 2 months since I first joined PSU (PS3 Forums, as it was known back then) but it's time to say goodbye to the past and look forward to the future. If you want, you can follow me on Steam (https://steamcommunity.com/id/VysePSU) and NeoGAF (https://www.neogaf.com/members/vysepsu.753544/).

Truthfully, I will miss all of PSU and I only wish the best to those running it and who continue to post despite the drop in activity. And it probably comes at a bad time with E3 right around the corner but I just feel like it's time. For real this time.

Good bye, good night and good luck, friends. =)

P.S. @AsterPhoenix, I did pick up Tales of Symphonia a couple weeks ago. Thanks for posting about and recommending the series.

I didn't get to be around you for a lot of those 13 years, but it's been great reading your posts and comments at the end of your run. All things in life eventually come to an end, and I do feel you got a lot of good things too look forward too. Vyse, you be safe no matter where you end up at.

Thank you, sir. You are too kind. I have also enjoyed reading your posts.

Don't be sad, Tidal, just think about all of the wonderful games there are to play - there's a universe of them!

I think he made some valid points. Anyone who says the Xbox vs PlayStation stuff wasn't one of the reasons this place went down is in denial. To this day you can go over to the Xbox section and see all the negativity and constant trolling. Just mean spirited most of the time.

Hey bud I hope your enjoying Tales of Symphonia! Actually im just got Vesperia the Definitive Edition recently as well as Ni No Kuni 2. I played the original Vesperia years ago and now that I played Berseria recently too.
Personally it's hard to decide my favorite because they are all good in different ways.

This is waaaay late to the previous commentary but I remember some people in the community being so toxic that it absolutely pushed others away. The pride of fanboyism on this site was common, immature, and self-damaging. Back in 2012ish when I became a staff member the wind of decline was already in the air and I and others suggested we need to foster a more welcoming approach. A lot of core activity was held by the same sort of posters (I barely remember their names, sorry, but I think we all remember the general crowd) constantly fighting and arguing and trying to justify why we need to ban the other guy. I've had so many arguments and 'peace talks' with people it felt like I was baby-sitting. I tried to talk people into not leaving after they messaged me about how they now disliked being here, but it never worked. It then became a system where if we did move in on those toxic posters we were cutting into our own forum activity, hoping the bet would pay off by letting other and newer posters stay. It obviously didn't work, and social media and alternative chat services were already pulling activity away. Reddit for example was growing swiftly and taking a ridiculous amount of traffic from the then antiquated posting environments. PSU, and classic forums in general, simply couldn't keep up with the competition. Discord rising in 2016 put more nails in the forum coffin.

For me the appeal of forums was always about the sense of community. A few dozen dedicated posters is my ideal state. I enjoyed discussing subjects with common faces and getting to know people. The occasional drama and gossip was fun too. I'm certain that's what attracted others as well, and I never felt the 'bugginess' of the forum software or 'lack of features' was really the issue. People didn't come or stay because you could accrue points to buy a pretty title or whatever. We wanted a place to belong with fellow nerds and gamers, but the fact is we aren't the primary users of the internet anymore. The priorities of businesses, reporting organizations, what people want from their posting communities and how they receive their news has changed. We're a niche existence.

I enjoyed my time here a lot but accept that the wave is over. I like checking in once or twice a year though. Hopefully you all are doing well in life!

It's like a skeleton crew but after 7 months I still feel like dropping by every now and then. I just recently decided I would get a Switch Lite for Breath of the Wild (and because I like playing Nintendo games on a handheld). Also looking forward to Destroy All Humans on PC and hopefully Guilty Gear Strive if it has a decent enough character roster.

Merry Christmas!

Yeah well there been a few messages so I have
been dropping by a little bit more. Yeah I still need to play BOTW and want to play Bayonetta 2. Yeah im hoping that Guilty Gear:Strive will be good too.

I want to get Hajimari No Kiseki in JP next year when it releases. Maybe Tokyo Mirage Sessions too and whatever games come out depends on price as well as budget.

Merry Christmas to you too Vyse!

I leave this Friday for Hawaii. I'll be gone until May 23rd. I'm taking my laptop with me, but I won't be online as much.

Hopefully you guys can keep the forums somewhat active while I'm gone. Perhaps we can brainstorm some ways to get a daily active community going.

Wow, its 2023! How time flies! I'm trying my best to get back to gaming. I'll get my bachelor's Summer of 2024, hopefully. Been trying to game, but work has me working lol. I'm trying to complete the Ragnorok campaign and just finished downloading the Legend of Dragoon. I wish it was 2013 again :(

Nice! God of War Ragnarok was dope. Definitely took longer to beat than the 2018 God of War. And Legend of Dragoon is a classic. I forgot they released it on the PS Store. I should probably check that out.
