The next chapter of the Gran Turismo series was officially revealed during Sony’s presentation at Paris Games Week today! As early reports indicated, the new PlayStation 4 game will be called “Gran Turismo Sport”, and the previously announced FIA Online Championship will take center stage in the new title.

As announced on stage by Kazunori Yamauchi, two versions of the FIA’s official competition will be “running simultaneously throughout the year”. First is the “Nation’s Cup”, where a player will represent his or her country. The second is the “Manufacturer Fan Cup”, where players will drive to represent their favorite car manufacturer.

The finalists in each competition will be brought together for an annual “FIA World Final”, and the winners will be awarded “alongside FIA sanctioned race winners in Paris during the Christmas season”, including the Formula 1 World Championship.

Kazunori made it clear he has big ambitions with the FIA, as Polyphony Digital is working closely with the FIA to “drive the future of motorsports for the next 100 years”.

Gran Turismo Sport will be launched as a public beta in “early 2016”, which will presumably be distributed via PSN like other high-profile open betas, such as the recent Star Wars: Battlefront demo.

In one last part of the announcement, Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed that Polyphony Digital is working to introduce PlayStation VR support for Gran Turismo Sport. Kazunori remarked that in their testing, he has found the experience to be “very natural”.
Now that the game has been officially announced I think it's time we had a dedicated thread, I know for a lot of people it's a marmite type of game (either love it or hate it for those who didn't know) but I for one am a very big fan of the series so nice to see it's finally coming to PS4 :D

So, lets talk:

Ha, I knew you would be the first one to create an OT for this game, Duffman.

I haven't really been too interested in the series except for Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec so I guess we'll see how they do with Gran Turismo Sport and Gran Turismo 7.

Fingers crossed this will be another great like GT3 A-Spec, looks promising from the early footage but then again games often do.

Hopefully they can limit themselves to a mere 100 Skyline variants this time around.

I just can't wait to see what they can do with the PS4's power in terms of graphics and sound, shame that it is more of a prologue than an actual game but it will be nice to finally see something Gran Turismo related on the PS4!

Kazunori Yamauchi should take a trip to the American/British based studio's like Hideo Kojima did. A few studio's are starting to use GPU raycasting for sound. Would probably help them out a bit with their sound design, importing raw sound into their game.... GT4/5 were great games, but the sound was not up to snuff for any self respecting car enthusiast imho.

I think they knew that which is why they decided to hire the Forza Motorsport sound guy, don't think anyone ever complained about the noise of the cars in that game!

That's good.

I've never been one to follow the common complaint of GT's lack of a damage model though, so i hope they don't go too hard out with that... If you are racing, why are you crashing? Surely only the suckiest drivers want a realistic damage model as some sort of payoff for their suckiness? :snicker

I wouldn't mind if they pinched Forza's rewind feature.... Sometimes there are distractions in the living room that aren't present while driving irl :p

Indeed, damage never bothered me in the GT series as I was concentrating more on staying on the track lol, but I guess people's argument is if it is the "real driving simulator" then damage should really be a given!

Haha, "All I ask is that if I'm driving headfirst into the wall at close to 200 miles per hour that my car erupts into a ball of fire and twisted metal! Yes, I am aware that we're racing."
