Hardware Review - PSU

Sony has confirmed that the PS5 will release in North America on November 12, 2020 and everywhere else on November 19, 2020. This thread will be to provide information and to discuss the new console. There are two variations of the PS5 available, the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. The only difference between the two is one has a 4k UHD Blu-ray player and the other does not. The price difference will be mentioned below. Post your questions, concerns, and excitement for the console in this thread. Right now, this is a general outline of everything related to the upcoming console. It's a work in progress and I'll attempt to update the OP as often as I can.





PS5 Specs:
The PS5 is packing an eight Zen2 core, sixteen thread variant of AMD’s Ryzen CPU, at 3.5GHz. Alongside its mammoth CPU, PS5 also boasts cutting edge AMD Navi tech where its GPU is concerned. When taken in tandem with the CPU, this not only means that the PS5 is capable of outputting some incredible visuals at 8K resolution, but that it is also wholly capable of rendering all manner of fancy effects (such as hardware Ray Tracing) at high resolutions, too. The PS5 has a 10.28 Teraflop GPU, with 36 CUs at 2.23GHz. The PS5 will have 16GB of GDDR6 Memory (448GB/s). 825GB Custom NVME SSD (5.5GB/s uncompressed, 9GB/s compressed) and Swappable PC-grade PCIe 4.0 SSD that runs at 5GB/s.

We are focused on the huge catalog of games on PlayStation 4, and we’re pleased that more than 99% of PS4 games will be playable on PS5 on day one. This includes games that have defined the PS4 generation – from critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima, to blockbuster hits from our third-party partners.

What is the difference between playing PS4 games on the PS5 Digital Edition console, versus the PS5 console with the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive?
The gaming experience on both models will be the same. However, how you access the content to play will differ:

PS5 Digital Edition
  • You will be able to play digital versions of your compatible PS4 games on the PS5 Digital Edition console. These will be compatible PS4 digital games you have already purchased, or plan to purchase, via PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, web or PlayStation mobile app.
  • Since there is no disc drive, you won’t be able to play your PS4 disc-based games on the PS5 Digital Edition.
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive
  • You can play digital versions of your compatible PS4 games you downloaded from PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, web or PlayStation mobile app.
  • You can also use physical PS4 game discs.
When you sign in to PS5 with your account for PlayStation Network, you will automatically see your library of played PS4 content through the menu.

Yeah, the PS5 has an extra storage slot for upgradable memory. NVMe M. 2 SSD slot. It'll act as storage for PS4 games, unless you can find one with the read/write speeds that match the PS5 internal SSD.

Sony needs to get their head out of their ass with the new Playstation Store. How can you upgrade the store and leave so many basic features out of it? It's f'n ridiculous. You can't see the file size of a game. Destiny 2 file size is the only one I've seen from the new store. It's in small print at the bottom of the page. That makes everything that much more weird. You can't see a game's dlc from its store page. There's no more screen shots or videos. You can't separate titles by: Price, A-Z or Z-A, ect.

Hopefully they fix those issues really soon. It's an annoyance that shouldn't have been there at all.

Maybe they're taking a minimalist approach from the outset, and over time add more information / features.

I think 825 is without the OS. The available free space is probably going to be something around 650. It will be ok for a while. You will be able to have a few games installed. But if you are one of those people who like to have a lot of games installed, then you probably wanna buy an internal expansion SSD later on. Sony has not officially gone out with which drives will be compatible, so we will just have to wait and see which ones they are going to confirm to be compatible.

New Sony Patent Hints At PS5 Auto HDR Feature

Auto HDR is a feature that will automatically apply HDR to textures and visuals, thus sharpening the colors and creating the illusion of the tech without it actually being implemented. In other words, PS5 games will look at that extra bit prettier without you having to lift a finger. This is all just speculation at this point as Sony hasn’t actually announced anything regarding such a feature, but we’ll be sure to let you know if we hear anything.

Is there any chance of being able to get a PS5 by the end of the year?

I have a feeling that all the units are going to be flying off the sheleves.

The demand for PS5 is higher than the demand for the PS4 in the US. Jim Ryan just said they've sold more PS5's in 12hrs than the first 12 weeks of PS4 preorders.

I think it's going to be very hard to find one on the shelf anytime before March.

If the Nvidia launch is anything to go by, i'm gunna assume everything is gunna sell out the second they're made available. The 3090 had an MSRP of $1500 USD and they vanished instantly, these consoles by comparison are a bargain! They are gunna sell like hot cakes!

Yes. After extensive testing, PSU has confirmed that the PS5 is region free in regards to games and certain media types.

This means the following:
  • You can play digital PS5 games from any region
  • You can play physical PS5 games from any region
  • Digital PS4 games from any region will work fine
  • Physical PS4 games from any region will work fine
  • Ultra HD 4K Blu Rays will work from any region

I have tested the controller a bit and I must say it's leaps and bounds beyond the horrible DualShock 4. It has that premium feeling on it, unlike the cheap on the DS4. Haven't tested its features yet but for what I've been hearing it's a pleasure to play with. The ergonomics are also much better, nice for big hands like mine also.

Making the analogs asymmetric and having the option to change batteries (or use AA) and it'd probably be the perfect controller.

AA batteries in a controller in 2020? and asymetrical analog sticks? That would make it a terrible controller, imo.

Uhmm... Xbox controllers have the option of a battery pack but rechargeable batteries are the best for me. They last a LOT compared to integrated ones. They're also cheap these days.

Asymmetric sticks are extremely comfortable to me. Said this, DualSense sticks feel much better than DS4's thanks to the controllers design.

I like the controller a lot. Just saying what It'd need to be perfect imo.

The Duel Sense is not hype at all. Anything less is a serious downgrade because it adds to the immersion of the game you're playing. The battery life is solid.

Astrobot really shows off the features best. It's not a mere demo. Those developers really deserve a bigger budget to go wild with. Call of Duty:CW uses it with all their guns. I haven't played Spider-Man yet. I can't wait to see what Insomniac does with Ratchet and Clank.

One thing i just saw about the Duasense,the touchpad is hyper sensitive.Using it now on my PC and the thing catches my movement before i even touch it,about 2mm before it registers (using it as mouse pointer) lol

Yeah, you are entitled to your own opinion. But the battery pack should be included and if you wanna use AA batteries that should only be there as an option, imo.

Well, different people, different opinions I guess. ;) The PS controller is one of the reasons I prefer PS (even if it is a minor one), I really don't like asymmetrical analog sticks, it doesn't make sense to me.
