Phil Spencer Doesn’t Give Much Hope For Future Bethesda Games Coming To PS5 In New Statement

Phil Spencer has given a new interview, talking about the Xbox Series S/X and their current slate of first-party games and in that interview he comments on their recent acquisition of Bethesda and that he doesn’t need to release Bethesda games on any other platforms other than the ones Microsoft own. In the new interview from Kotaku, Phil Spencer gives the following comment:

“We have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don’t have to go ship [Bethesda] games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us. Whatever that means.”

So, whilst he doesn’t completely and definitely state that Bethesda games won’t be coming to PS5 he is certainly telling us that Microsoft has no obligation to release Starfield, The Elder Scrolls VI, or any other Bethesda game on PS5 in the future. On top of that, he states that Microsoft would be able to recoup the $7.5 billion investment in Bethesda even if they skipped PS5 for a game like The Elder Scrolls VI.

They dont have the obligation but they are in for the money. And this will bring them tons of money. So i would not be surprised if they did release the games after a while...In the end, they have already "trained" their fans, and they wont object much, they will take it as a Pro consumer move lol

There you go. Big Bethesda games are very likely to become Xbox ecosystem exclusive.

Microsoft is all-in for Game Pass (and everything related to cloud), and releasing big games on a platform that doesn't allow it just doesn't make much sense. The "console war" has changed already. Keeping them exclusive to their ecosystem will be a big selling point for the service.

PS only users might have to get used to the idea of not playing Bethesda games... or consider buying an Xbox/PC (+GamePass preferably)

Lets wait and see,i'm curious what will happen in the end.To keep them on their system only,im not that sure how it will be a selling point tho....The selling point for Ms is gamepass, that its subs wont need to pay for the games, when others will. Not sure why Ms would not do that, when they got nothing to lose, and will earn millions of profit from other systems. So lets wait :)

Probably for the same reasons the don't release - aside from Minecraft - any of their exclusives on PS =)
I know that you think they wont but dont be surprised if they do :) Im very curious to see what they will do in the end. Also their strategy changed...its not the same anymore.

Btw this is what Phil said.So take it as you like;

“Is it possible to recoup a $7.5 billion investment if you don’t sell Elder Scrolls VI on the PlayStation?” I asked.

“Yes,” Spencer quickly replied.

Then he paused.

“I don’t want to be flip about that,” he added. “This deal was not done to take games away from another player base like that. Nowhere in the documentation that we put together was: ‘How do we keep other players from playing these games?’ We want more people to be able to play games, not fewer people to be able to go play games. But I’ll also say in the model—I’m just answering directly the question that you had—when I think about where people are going to be playing and the number of devices that we had, and we have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don’t have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us. Whatever that means.”

Sony needs to have a big acquisition of their own to counteract this.

Right now Microsoft has 23 studios to their only 13, and now arguably their IP portfolio blows Sony's out the water.

I love God of War and Ghost of Tsushima and like Days Gone (and likewise hate Uncharted, ambivalent on Horizon and now soured on The Last of Us after part 2) but that's a meagre line up compared to Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Dishonored, Gears, Starfield, Halo, Forza, Fable, Killer Instinct etc.

If Sony bought out Capcom or Square Enix that would easily overshadow buying out Zenimax, but I kinda dont trust Sony now to not ruin a Japanese company acquisition.

Ever since they moved their headquarters to California they dont feel like the same Sony I loved during the PS1, PS2 and PS3 eras.

The only thing of comparable worth to TES out in the market atm is the GTA series. As a counter to the loss of TES and Fallout, this would probably be the only viable option. Ubi maybe a distant second. They are publicly listed, and can probably be gotten for less than the value of Zenimax, but they then face the uphill battle of trying to take either one back to being private so they can steer the ship (as the case may be).

Im in a agreement with that about Sony. Lots of things started with that and things have been changing since Andrew House left. Well for the IP side of things it depends on what MS do with it. I don't like the idea of Microsoft and other companies turning gaming into a subscription service. I hate paying monthly for things .I enjoyed Ghost of Tsushima lots even enjoyed God Of War in ways despite not being a big fan of the series like yourself I enjoyed older Sony IP's.

Take Two would cost 25-30B at least, and they're in a healthy financial position if I'm not mistaken. Don't think Sony or even Microsoft would spend that much money on a publisher.

Ubi on the other hand is a 20k employee monster. I'd say those 2 are out of question for both, unless they really want to take the risk.

They're both publicly listed, so you only really need the majority stake. I wasn't implying it was possible however, just that that's kinda what they'd have to gun for. But as i said above, that's another thing entirely. If you can get the majority stake, you then need to get the rest to agree to go private.

I guess if MLB The Show can come to Xbox then anything is possible. Then again, MLB pushed for that move so Microsoft is sort of like the MLB for Bethesda games. Its all up to them.

Elder Scrolls and Fallout games have usually always been PC buys for me. So I'm not too worried. It's all about the mods!
Same for me. I think I've got all games (that interest me) that would be affected by this deal on PC. But it's definitely a powerful deal they've made. A lot of PS users don't have gaming PC's.
