this is from the new PSM mag. It a pretty big article, but here are so of the points.

"President of Sony has made it clear that his company has an amibitious new online strategy."

"Cast aside any doubts and start gazing toward skyward, because thats where Sony is aiming with plans that go far beyond simple leaderboards and matchmaking."

"Sony has just delivered the final development hardware to U.S. game developers. We can confirm that developers have already begun meetings with Sony's support teams to make sure their games are compatible with the yet unnamed Online Service."

"Its very real, one source tells us. They (Sony) are dead serious about it. They've declared a full on assault on the latest version of Xbox Live!"

"The online service is being designed to also work with the PSP and its games. Think one, BIG Playstation network!"

Hell i'd let this slip...for some hype. These forums have been pretty lack-luster these days.

GIVE ME HYPE, OR GIVE ME DEATH!

EDIT:

Ummmm, that says 2005 thought, wanna explain?
That was the November/December '05 Issue of PSM.

Dude, that was only 1 or 2 months ago.

Considering PS3 Online has been in deve. for 5-6 years...

so there are final dev kits out? does this mean there is a playable ps3 right now?

Sony has just delivered the final development hardware to U.S. game developers.
So a march launch in Japan or where ever is highly possible, espicially if there are final dev kits out there.
When did this magazine come out/
?

I dunno, I think this is pretty big news, even if magazines lie, alot. I might try and find this magazine, if I do I will type out some more key points, good to hear what there is so far though.

Sounds intriguing. Not heavily into online gaming, but I do play SOCOM often. It'll be interesting if they are able to keep it free of charge.

*Goes out to but the new PSM*

Dude i get PSM...they are seriously well dug in with devs and such.

What I mean to say is, they get a lot of info from inside sources.

But seriously, I would never trust a more reliable source than PSM...other than Sony.

Yeah. I've always wanted the Playstation products to have a cool strong online service for free. I know they already have one but you know what I mean. I bet XBox Live lovers will say they will copy it.

Guys, don't expect Sony to have this service on day one. Sure they've had it in development for a while, however they have to test it first. I expect them to have the same type of online as the PS2 for a while and then have public beta tests with the real online service later. Halleleuja

yeah i think sony would have to make it free if they plan to use teh PSP in this service. I don't see them coming out with something that would make you pay to play your old PSP games online.

Pretty good magazine, but if you're going to take the good news as the gospel, than you have to take the bad as well and PSM has been stating that the launch won't be until the fall for the states. I Believe the OFFICIAL Playstation mag is the one with the most ACCURATE information, afterall it's backed by Sony.

KBsmoker, did you get the magazine or are you just forwarding the news? If you got it, will you do me a favor and answer this question? At the end of the February issue, the preview for the next issue mentions PSM going hands on with "one of PlayStation biggest series." What game is it? Medal of Honor comes to mind, but who knows

Well, I'm not quite sure about that. They did say, that the business model wouldn't be unified. It basically means, that Sony don't want to be the commercial center of the online structure. It's up to the developers and publisher to provide game servers and eventually charge a user. However, there can still be a set of common features and functions provided by Sony in a PlayStation World service (or whatever they may want to call it).

Sony only dismissed the unified business model - not the technology...

This was also said by Phil Harrison:

Harrison did commend Microsoft with regard to the success of the Xbox Live service, telling the audience: "Microsoft has done a lot of things right, and there are certainly things that are going to form the model for many of the high quality consumer experiences that we will deliver with PS3."

"But I think our role is always to go beyond, to push further," he continued.

"I'm not in a position today to share with you all the details but PS3 was a network platform from the very beginning, and that is designed into every aspect of the machine."

However, Harrison did state that Sony is planning to offer a "more open platform" -a service that will give consumers access to content which is either free, or sold by publishers themselves.

"Perhaps distinct from our competitors, we are happy for other publishers to form their own commercial relationships directly with the consumer," he said.

"We want other companies to see the PS3 as a platform that they can exploit for their content, services and communities."

They'll deliver - don't worry :D

Thank you. Already knew that but some people don't. For proof people, it was in the PSM interview with Jack Tretton and Kaz Harai.

Hi turkmen117, I just edited my post with a quote and a link to an article.

I only trust articles that are based on Sony executives mentioned by name and the interview being quoted. Often the journalists also write what they want to hear..

And that actually makes me confident about the value of the PlayStation 3.

Turkmen, that mine as well have been a double post...Your last statement was basically the same thing.

How about instead of saying something like that...you answer my original question asking you to FIND the Issue and Page Number that inofrmation is found on.

This a pretty interesting post, however I'm not extra hyped or shocked because I expect something like this....They were working on this kinda internet service since they first introduced the network pack to(they wanted to compete with xbox live). However, they didn't want people with dial-up to be left out so I take it this was the reason they didn't launch a full broadband service. This coming gen tho everyone will be using high speed so the possibilities/capabilities of the service would be much better. You guys can't be truly shocked that Sony is planning a truly competitive online service, come on its business and this was expected.
