[QUOTE="Beamer1112, post: 0]I wonder how big of a competition this will become. I imagine some might get pretty serious. Anyone think Sony will track the scores of the PS3 users, and recognize a few teams and individuals?[/QUOTE]

I doubt it. But you never know...

380Watts[/URL][/B] during peak operation.

However, (based on suggested performance of “10 times that of a standard" PC) it may possibly fold as much as 2 Kentsfield quad-cores- the cheapest of which go for about $850US and consume about 130W each.

Of course, if you wish to run your Kentsfields, you are also going to need motherboards, memory, PSUs, disk drives … and then you may also wish to play games on at least one system- so figure in the video card X factor too.

Okay, one system may run you maybe $13-1500 and consume 2-300 Watts?

So there are some of us who are seriously considering the PS3 as a potential “folding mostly” or “folding only” system. If the numbers pan out, this could be the best fold-for-the-dollar deal out there.

[QUOTE="vish420, post: 0]sorry for being off topic, but what is this 25 character rule being argued at the top of this page?[/QUOTE]
There is a 25 character mimimum imposed on every post made (part of the form validation, so it cannot be got around). It's there (along with the 5 word minimum rule), to help stop pointless replies like, "I agree" and other short responses that add nothing to the thread.

I think this is great that Sony putting the cell to good use on research. This video really puts it into perspective, Richard Marks is a good speaker.[/quote]

That's a really good video - nice find. BTW, do you want to be added to the team list?

[QUOTE="FrankieG889D, post: 0]So is this supposed to be released on Thursday?[/quote]

It's probably going to be released with the 1.6 update, which will be by Friday, March 23. I'm guessing then that it will be available bout 12AM Friday. I guess it's a new kind of midnight launch perhaps (if it is indded midnight). :)

I wonder if sales will drive up for people wanting a dedicated machine to fold for them without killing their PCs
I wouldn't doubt that it would influence some people to get it as a dedicated folder. However, I don't know if you would notice any real difference in sales as there are only 200,000 active computers and the majority are not dedicated machines.

So who else has downloaded the PC version to get a head start? My first WU is suppose to be done in 1 day 13 hours and 25 minutes from this post and is running at the horribly slow rate of 31s/frame. Pathetic when you compare it to the .08s/frame of the PS3. (My poor lappy is getting owned :( badly)

Mine is running at 33s/frame. It now would seem like a waste to keep my computer on to fold when it would take so long compared to the PS3.

On a side note, I put my computer in standby overnight, and when I woke up, the frames were completed and the estimated time remaining had remained exactly the same as when it was on yesterday. How did it work when in standby - weird?

As for those of you wondering if you could have more than one thing folding under the same username, I would assume that this is possible considering that under the individual stats page there is a spot for "active processors."

Although I'm new here, I will certainly be joining the PS3Forums team for F@H. Just as soon as I figure out what my PS3 user name is going to be.

[QUOTE="ChildOfIllusions, post: 0]LOL helping cure diseases as a team sport I LOVE IT count me in once the update comes and i get a wirless router that allows my computer and ps3 to get the internet at the same time[/quote]

Not sure it's even worth hooking up your computer (yea I know its for cancer). Most comps are running around 30-35s/frame. PS3's will do .08s/frame.

Quick Math:

PS3: 5000f * .08s/f = 400s/60 s/m = 6.66 minutes.

PC: says it'll take about 2 days 12 hours a 30 minutes = 60.5 hours. Not quite the 40:1 ratio but we'll see how it works out.

It's all for a good cause, and good rep for Sony and the PS3. I can't wait for the headline "PS3 cures disease!"

edit: woah MASSIVE MISTAKE BY ME!!! hours should be minutes

it really depends on your computer... cause im pretty sure a new c2d or c2q can handle frames a lot better than other proc, well, this is obviously. but when its idling, im pretty sure u can set its priority higher, using more bandwidth and stuff to process more.

i feel like its a waste on my laptop, 42sec/frame and it heats the hell out of my laptop, which will cause it to die faster :(
on the ps3 i wont mind cuz it will take less than a second per frame

if you guys gonna do F@H with your laptop, remember to plug your battery charger up and take out your battery!

this will give the laptop power to run, but not constantly charge the battery (saving the battery life)

You guys have quick computers. At one point my laptop (18 months old)was going at 7.31 frames per second....now I've optimized it and its still at 2:31. I'm firing up another computer tonight and will check that out...

Help - what am I doing wrong with my signature?......I have the image tags...
