When you first get your Vita it should be fully charged. The battery will drain very quickly! I think I managed to kill the battery in about 2hrs. After I charged the battery I noticed the life lasted a little longer this time. I got about 3hrs out a the full charge. After I charged the Vita up for the 3rd time I got about 5hrs.

Battery status

* Out of the box = 2hrs

* After one full charge = 3hrs

* After 2nd full charge = 5hrs

* After 3rd full charge = 6hrs

From my experience, it seems the battery needs to develop it's memory. The more full charges it gets, the longer it will last. I maxed out at 6hrs and 11mins.

(These times were tested using normal use of the PS Vita. Brightness was set to half. Location services were set to use with "Near" only. And I turned off the dashboard music. Roughly 1hr was used playing a retail game)

My experience thus far is about 3.5 hours per charge. That's playing games with default settings. I've had it for a week and haven't noticed a major change in how long the battery lasts, but I hope Lethal is right that over time it'll develop a bit more.

Usually when you get a new electronic device, you have to refrain from using it and it is preferable to plug it for about 8 hours and then use it until it is dry. This makes the li-ion batteries' "memory" remember what full and what empty is. It's actually fairly interesting to see how battery life for a device is degraded by charging it only to half or a portion of its total every time.

If you haven't yet, adjust your brightness down to the middle and turn off some location services. I also turned off the music that plays on your dashboard.

Good tips. I also changed how long it takes the Vita to go to sleep because it kept shutting down while watching intros to games or waiting for something to load.

Ya, 1 min is too soon to sleep. Think I set mine to 5mins.

Thanks for this again, Lethal. Obviously I would prefer longer battery but it seems just fine, certainly in line with what Sony was saying it would be :)
Great, but what the hell? Why would battery life increase with each full charge? That does not make sense to me
It is pretty weird. The same thing happened with my phone too (galaxy s2). At first battery was poop, but then after a week or so it got a lot better. I leave it charging always over-night

That was really interesting, I'll keep that in mind when the Vita finally arrives! + rep

You are exactly right in the treatment of your batteries. No doubt users who degrade their battery will be up in arms in 1 to 2 years when they start to notice their ill effects.

Is it safe to assume that you're letting your battery completely drain before charging it again? I have a habit of either keeping my portable electronics plugged in when I'm at home, or charging them before they completely drain. I don't mind the 3 hour battery life on the Vita, but I'd like to squeeze as much juice out of it as possible. I normally turn off the extra stuff (music, location based "apps"), as well as lowering the brightness. Still....I'd like to "condition" my Vita to get the longest possible battery life out of it as well.

Also, thanks for the tip on the battery life!

Maybe your psp is like a super sayain. You know, every time its completely uncharged it comes back with twice the power :p
anyways thanks for the heads up, this is my main concern and the only thing thats really stopping me from getting a Vita, if it had a longer battery life i would be fine, especially since you can't take it out and buy a bigger one, like with the psp.

This was posted back in September, havent seen anything since though!

Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Vita handheld will support an external battery peripheral to further elongate the device’s battery life.
Speaking to IGN, Shuhei Yoshida, head of Sony Worldwide Studios, commented, “If you have noticed, we have just announced the peripherals for PS Vita. And one of the peripherals is the external battery. That extends the battery life of PS Vita.”

“So if you’re flying from New York to San Francisco, or vice versa, you have no concerns if you have an additional external battery.”

Sony said Wednesday that the battery life for Vita would clock in at around 3-5 hours for gaming, though would last up to nine hours when playing music or in standby mode.

PlayStation Vita is scheduled for release in Japan on December 17, with a western launch following in early 2012.

Sorry but you may have confused Ni-Mh and Ni-Cad with Li-Ion batteries. Lithium Ion batteries have no "memory effect". Nickel Cadmium does.

Li-Ion batteries are being used in laptops, tablets and mp3 players for many years now with no ill effects from partial charging.

Would you guys suggest using the PS Vita when you open it and use it til the battery drains then recharge it fully, or recharge it straight away?

The battery will already have a charge. Play it till it drains.
