PS Vita will soon end production in Japan, according to the official Japanese PlayStation website. The pages for the PCH-2000 ZA11 (PS Vita Black) and PCH-2000 ZA23 (PS Vita Aqua Blue) SKUs, which are the only two remaining PS Vita models in production in Japan, mention that “shipments are scheduled to end soon.”

Sony Interactive Entertainment, which manufactures PS Vita, had previously confirmed that production of the handheld will end in 2019.

While a specific end date is currently unknown, it is worth noting that when PlayStation 3 ended production back in May 2017, the official Japanese PlayStation website posted the same notice two months prior.

PS Vita first launched in December 2011.
The traditional handheld market is dead in the west anyway. Sony should focus their resources on the PS5 and PSVR 2 going forward.

What has that have to do with Japan? Nintendo rules the handheld market. Vita never really had a chance. Anyway, I'm sure this news made Reggie smile.

Nintendo is the first one to know the traditional handheld market is dead. That's why their latest effort was what they cal a "hybrid". A purely portable console would have died in this phone gaming era.

I don't know if it could be considered ahead of it's time, but with the way mobile games are going, you could make the argument that it was the case.

There's no reason a Vita port of any of today's PUBG Mobiles, or Fortnite's wouldn't go down well on the Vita owning to the fact this is a device with dedicated hardware for playing games - actual buttons.

Sadly, this thing went up against the DS, and that didn't end too well. Put out some great titles while it was around though!

Shame because I really enjoyed owning one back in the day, just feel like Sony didn't really give it enough support but going up against the hugely successful DS was always going to be a struggle, R.I.P Vita

Sad. The PS Vita and PSP were actually pretty good handhelds. Especially if you can get emulators on them. Curious if Sony will ever launch another handheld.

It's a shame I enjoyed lots of games on the Vita it was underrated. They should make all Vita games playable through PSN on PS4 and PS5. Persona 4 Golden ,Muramasa Demon Blade and Tales Of Hearts R are some for example.
