Yeah so i've got a 26" sony bravia to play my ps3 on, but was just wondering whether it was possible to play it on my pc monitor, i've got a standard 24" samsung SyncMaster2443BW, pretty sick monitor but just the standard DVI, i know you can get a vga to hdmi port, but they cost like £110 on play.com, any other suggestions?

I'm guessing your monitor has a vga and dvi input but your pc is currently using the dvi. If you want to run the ps3 and pc through it you need to have the pc on the vga and the ps3 on the dvi using either a hdmi to dvi cable or convertor.

I do this with my ps3 but one word of warning. The 16:10 ratio of most monitors will distort the image unless they support 1:1 pixel mapping

That has a DVI input, I suppose it will work, though I've never used one. Do you have a sound source? Since you are converting HDMI to DVI you can't use sound through cable. I for one have HDMI hooked up to a monitor and use my composite cables for sound (red and white combined into single for input into logitech speakers).

true, worse case you could always get or use (if your mobo or monitor came with one) a DVI to VGA adapter.

like i said i'd highly reccomend both of these, but then again i know spending 50+ bucks on new speakers doesn't fit in everyone's budget

so check
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&SubCategory=60&N=2010370060
(it's just a newegg search w/ lowest first)

but if you don't want speakers i would also recommend something similar to turtle beaches, like gaming headphones, cus i love my turtle beaches!

[QUOTE="don77, post: 0]oh thanks, but would the turtle beach headphones project the game audio? if yes then which model are they?[/quote]

this could be a long post but i'm going to try and make it as quick and painless as possible

1. yes they have game audio
2. to get audio w/ them ur gunna have to use the red white yellow connectors along with the hdmi (just set the audio out to the red/white
3. personally i got the x1's for the xbox, but ya know you can get the p21's for the ps3 if that's what you primarily are going to use

*******NOTE
i don't know what systems you have but here's the thing, x1's are good for the xbox because they have a voice adaptor that controlls the volume, however they are separate from actual headset so if you were to get them for say ps3, you would need to buy a usb to 2.5mm?(not positive about this one) dongle and you wouldn't be able to adjust the volume of the voices...unless you get another usb extender cable and hold the dongle next to you. but by then you'd look like the spaghetti monster there would be so many cables.

so just get p21's and you should be fine...
if you're looking for ps3/xbox/pc alternatives, post back in this message and i'll show you what i've done to make my x1's universal

I've got similar problem so I'm gonny "hijack" this thread before starting a new one..

I've got my PC connected to a Samsung 226BW 22" monitor which has 1xDVI and 1xVGA input. As the PC is using DVI I had the idea to connect my PS3 via VGA and play on the monitor instead on my cheap old SD TV.

The connection between PS3 and LCD is as follows:

PS3 - HDMI to DVI cable - VGA adapter - monitor

Unfortunatly, I cannot get this to run; my screen just stays black with the monitor not able to find a signal. I managed to get the PS3 to work without the VGA adapter with the input coming through DVI. Yet, this would mean that I would have to switch cables everytime I want to play and wouldnt be able to use my PC while being on my PS3. Thus, I'd prefer to have it on VGA obviously.

So my question is:

Is it possible at all to connect the PS3 to an LCD monitor the way I plan to do? Are there any hardware restrictions I have overlooked? Could my VGA adaptor just be faulty resulting in the black screen?

Thanks in advance guys

Won't work

Because you're outputting via HDMI, you NEED an HDCP compatible monitor or an HDCP stripper. Doesn't matter if you convert to analog VGA output. Because the first step is HDMI output, the HDCP is a necessity. Sorry.

Use VGA for PC and DVI for PS3. Thats how I have my 226BW setup when I connect the Ps3 to it.

Tried that already and put the DVI->VGA adapter I bought to use with PS3 on the DVI output cable from my card. Pressed the Source button on the monitor but couldn't find a signal.

Oh bummer, so HDCP is only available for DVI? Which means my only choice would be something like [ame="http://www.amazon.com/DVI-to-VGA-HD-Converter/dp/B001F1YE6E/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1252437868&sr=8-6"]HDFury[/ame]?

well there's another way you could do it that's slightly more complex

get one of these
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3-Component-AV-Cable/dp/B000MIXFWA"]Amazon.com: PlayStation 3 Component AV Cable: Video Games[/ame]
(ps3 component cables)

and one of these
http://cgi.ebay.com/Transcoder-HD-B...in_0?hash=item3ca56e7eea&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
(component to vga transcoder)

overall that's about 70-80 bucks depending on shipping,
but i only chose this method because this way i can use my [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-1212-Definition-Personal-Recorder/dp/B0018LX0DY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1252440993&sr=8-1"]hauppauge hd pvr[/ame]
to record whatever i'm viewing, and i can just switch cables depending on if i want to record gameplay or tv for my zune.

i can't comment on the transcoder yet but i should be getting mine in the mail in a few days so i'll post back if you want...

also this is only about 10 bucks difference and i personally, in your position, would go with the hdfury, but i just chose this method because it's easier to record through component than it is to with hdmi

Been trying to get the video card output to work over VGA but for some reason it just wont do it.

Yet, to me its not really worth to spend 50+ Euro. Watching some cheap transcoder boxes in ebay but otherwise I'd just put the money into my HDTV fund :p

Anyway, thanks for your ideas guys
