Note that we haven't written about this on the site because we just don't think it will happen, but it hasn't stopped some people speculating.

http://gadgets.ndtv.com/games/news/could-sonys-playstation-4-debut-at-destination-playstation-312378

These guys and a few other sites reckon that the PS4 could be announced at the DESTINATION PLAYSTATION event held in Arizona in February. I mean they announced Sleeping Dogs from there last year, but it's hardly the platform to get the eyes of the world watching.

Still think it will be E3?

It'd be cool, if true, but I think they'll get more buzz at E3. Especially with a teaser trailer for Gran Turismo 6 since we didn't get one last year.

With TLoU and GoW both out in Spring all signs point to PS4 bein released in at least one region next fall, but for some reason I still remain doubtful

I agree E3 would be a better choice. Or a special event where they announce it, and follow up on price etc at E3 - probably the best way to get buzz going actually

I think everyone's expecting to see it at E3 so they might announce it before then. If not, they could announce the price and release date at gamescom.

I doubt it.

But then again, Sony over the last few years has been announcing lots of stuff BEFORE E3 and then just showing it off at E3. So who knows...

If they announce it in February when would it launch? Summer is typically a bad period to launch a product so if it would be released in the autumn why announce it next month and kill PS3 sales? Unless they plan to release it immediately. No, it doesn't make sense. E3 makes sense on every level.

I would think they'd want to build up the hype and advertise it before releasing it by the end of the year. They might not even release it until 2014 but, if you ask me, an official announcement is long overdue.

That usually backfires. Better to announce it when they know they are close to release. E3 for a holiday release or early 2014 makes sense. If they announce it early and then need to delay the release they'll suffer the Osborne effect which, frankly, Sony, financially, can't afford. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_effect

Playstation Vita was announced at the Playstion Meeting on January 27, 2011. Something else was announced at a January Playstation meeting as well.

I don't think any hardware has ever been announced at Destination Playstation.

I know the PS Vita was officially announced at E3 2011 and was released in Japan in Dec 2011, so maybe Sony is starting to close the announcement/release gap of their systems, but like Dave-The-Rave said, if it isn't announced before E3 this year I don't have high hopes of it coming out this holiday season...hopefully I am wrong and the fact that the PS2 has stopped production in Japan means they are starting to put their focus on PS4/Orbis production like when they stopped building PS1's, but only time will tell...

I think there will be a PlayStation Meeting like when the Vita was announced, probably after The Last of Us comes out but before E3. At E3 unveil loads of games for it.

I doubt they'll announce it before E3, and I don't see it happening this E3. Hopefully they are still working on it and coming up with a strategy to maximize power yet keep it relatively affordable at launch. Every creditable rumor (and that's not saying much) I've heard from folks working on next gen games points to a 2014 release window; that's not going on much, but most likely 2nd half of 2014 from what I've heard but couldn't report.

i think the people who are buying PS3 now won't be at all concerned about a PS4 coming anytime soon, never mind this year.

E3 is too perfect of a time. They have too many games to push in the first half of the year. Sly, God of War and The Last of Us.

Hopefully this is true and will light a fire under Sony's ass, they can't afford to wait a year after Microsoft again...hopefully since the PS4/Orbis is using more common off the shelf parts they will be able to have it out this holiday season, either way I will be getting one or both systems this year!

I believe the real announcement will happen at E3, but there could be some teaser trailers from PS4 games in the time period from February to April. All the good games come out before E3 I think. This makes E3 the sweet spot for announcing a new console. But man, 500 dollars/Euros is not much. The console needs a lot of other stuff besides raw hardware like graphics chips, CPU, RAM and all that stuff. It needs a bluray drive, all the ports and stuff, and whatever gimmick they choose to build in.

I mean look at it from a PC kind of point of view: A 500 dollar/Euro gaming PC is not THAT great. It'll play most games like BF3 and Crysis3 at a decent framerate at standard HD (1280x720) with High/Very High settings. I'm not so sure about Crysis3 and Far Cry 3, because they need a very powerful PC to be played in full HD (1920x1080) in 60FPS and everything on ultra high and high-res textures on, Anti-Aliasing on the highest setting an all that stuff...

I highly doubt that the next gen consoles could rival a current 500-750 dollar gaming PC. A PC just needs a motherboard with all the parts, a console needs other things because some people think that consoles need to be "multimedia devices". In my opinion, they should go for a minimalistic, but cool style of the exterior (like the PS3 slim - NOT like the PS3 super slim). Matte mixed with glossy or whatever, and no gimmicks. I don't need my GAMING CONSOLE to play TV for me, or whatever. It must play games at the best quality possible!

[QUOTE="Dave-The-Rave, post: 5978744]Considering Sony have no games announced for the 2nd half of this year i'd say that's a pretty good sign.

Thats nothing new for them, at all.
