http://www.psu.com/news/25916/PS4-t...;-outselling-Xbox-One-by-40-percent----report

Sony's PlayStation 4 will hit a projected 80 million units sold by the year 2019, comfortably outselling Microsoft's Xbox One by a whopping 40 percent, according to a report compiled by market research consultancy firm Strategy Analytics.

Found in the research firm's 'Connected Home Devices Report', the forecast predicts that, given PS4's dominance in its first year - a feat it compares to the success of the PS2's first year - Sony is on course to hit 80 million consoles sold by 2019 compared to that of 57 million Xbox Ones sold by Microsoft.

Speaking about the findings in general, Strategy Analytics senior analyst Eric Smith said: "Despite reports to the contrary, the game console market is not dead. Core gamers have moved faster to this current generation than in any previous generation. The main difference in this generation is that casual gamers who bought a Wii are remaining largely on the side lines as free-to-play casual games and midcore games on tablets and smartphones have captured this segment of consumers."

PS4's consumer-friendly build and its lower price point compared to its competition has undoubtedly played an integral part in the console's successful first year, and with a plethora of first-party and indeed third-party exclusive content planned for this calendar year, it's not too far-fetched to forecast this prediction coming to fruition.
Crazy to think that PS4 could actually replicate PS2's success in an era where people tried to write-off consoles.

Thats a little silly.

Anything can happen in 4 years.

For all we know Sony could go broke and sell Playstation to Disney and then we'd get Joel and Ellie in Star Wars.

Oh yeeeeeeah.

Let's assume a general, annual growth interest of 15%

Fall 2013 - Fall 2014 = 13,500,000 (source)
Fall 2014 - Fall 2015 = 15,525,000
Fall 2015 - Fall 2016 = 17,853,750
Fall 2016 - Fall 2017 = 20,531,812
Fall 2017 - Fall 2018 = 23,611,583

Total = 91,022,145 + Whatever sells during Christmas 2018 (95ish million by January 2019?)

According to this the PS2 hit 70 million during it's fifth year end. So the PS4 is on a huge roll right now. It'll pick up more as the price drops come and bigger games release.

Yea, I think they undercut the PS4.^^

To reach 80M they'd need to sell just 16M every year over the 5 year period. The first year we already know was under at 13.5M, however that is still very close to the intended 16M.

Given the games coming out I would not be surprised if they surpassed the 16M requirement this year alone and then it'd just be a matter of time to recover the missed 2.5M from the first year.
What will that mean for PlayStation Now?
^^ Fixed. :D

I wouldn't be surprised to see this happen. When you have the strongest console and the biggest stable of first party studios making some of the industry's favorite games + experimental/weird games at an affordable price you are set for success, evident by 20 million sold in one year (and that was done without much muscle from SCEWWS). That's aside from whatever Sony adds to sweeten the already nifty PlayStation ecosystem it's got going on with PS4/Now/Vita/Morpheus.

^it is one of the many elements helps ps4 comes top everyday. But like Locomotive said, 4 years is too much to predict. Even if someone can predict 2016 jan sale numbers , it will be huge. 2019? they is just nuts.

I believe it's possible, like people are saying the PS4 is on a huge roll right now and there are plenty of price cuts and exclusive games yet to come so it seems more than achievable!

Those who said that played more spreadsheets than games. :)
