According to Nintendo, the Nintendo 3DS's battery gives players from three to eight hours of play. How does that compare to the PS Vita's battery?
Today, Sony revealed that the PS Vita will offer between three to five hours of game play. Sony noted that this does not include network play. This is the battery life with screen brightness at the default setting, no Bluetooth, and using headphones.
The PS Vita offers around five hours of video and approximately nine hours of music in stand-by mode.
"The duration may change depending on the brightness of the screen, what content being played and if the network (3G/Wi-Fi) feature is being used or not," wrote Sony in an official release.
The 3DS is able to squeak out eight hours of gameplay for Nintendo DS titles running on the minimal brightness setting.
While it takes 3.5 hours for the 3DS battery to fully charge, it takes two hours and forty minutes for the PS Vita to charge from zero battery power. That's quicker than the 3DS, but it 3DS is able to knock out a few more hours of play.

I'm waiting for:

Internal Storage
HDMI or AV port
Better battery

Hopefully all these come in a revision, I have no problem paying $250 but I dont really want a portable device nowadays without the ability to connect to the TV or some built in storage, even if it was a mere 4GB.

Hmm...didn't think about that, I think I'll wait for Vita Slim.

I totally want this thing though.

Can't imagine all the possibilities.

I dont usually game for longer than a few hours at a time. I also have a portable charger cell which could probably charge the Vita 1.5-2 times. I will most likely still be getting this day 1ish.

Im disappointed by this news. Like a lot of people I will wait for the slim revision that will probably come out in 2014/15. But will I be able to wait that long? SOny shot themselves in the foot with this one......

I'll definitely grab Vita day one. If it has 3 hours of gameplay I'll be satisfied.

My PSP used to last 2:45 minutes more or less. I had a second battery just in case and never used it much on the go. In the end I realised that even when travelling abroad I didn't even have full 2,5 hours of free time to game.

Heh, Sony didn't shoot themselves in the foot with this one. If you want power, you better be prepared to "pay" for it since the battery technology hasn't really advanced at all (at least not when it comes to consumer electronics, of course they are testing all kinds of solutions, which still remain too expensive to be used in mass market electronis). Though, even taking this into account, Vita's battery life is pretty much the same as PSP's, so I'm not sure what you people whining about. 3 hours really isn't as short as it sounds.

It's not like iPhones or Galaxy Ss last any longer when doing some heavy gaming or otherwise power-draining stuff.

Pretty understandable. Its a portable PS3 (in a way), so of course its gonna need a lot of power. Also, does it have a USB charger? If it does, i could pretty much survive on that battery, since i own a portable USB charger

Is somewhat disappointing that this is worse than the newest PSP's estimate for gaming battery life. It's more than enough time for portable gaming though.

No one in this thread whined, or even complained.

Yeah good point. I'm around computers a lot through my day, so charging via USB would be pretty cool

People are whining just not in a very outspoken way. I think when the horrible 3DS battery life was announced people took a stance of "well the vita will surely be better!" hearing that it might be similar make people cautious with their words so as not to be laughed at. Let's be honest here it's damn annoying to hear it'll have poor batterylife, I think the choice to not give the system a replaceable battery that might be capable of holding a longer life hurts the overall excitement for the device. Yeah I still want it and I will probably get it day one but knowing that I'll have to make sure everything is off and keep the screen brightness low just to sustain as close to a 5 hour battery life as possible irks me deeply. Knowing that someone's going to take the opportunity to sell me a piece of garbage battery extender that makes the system awkward to hold annoys me.

The vita isnt perfect, It'll probably get better later on, but the quality of content right now almost forces a person to get it now rather than waiting 2 or 3 years for the inevitable upgrade... which after seeing some of the "upgrades" the PSP suffered makes me think it might be best to be an early adopter even with those problems.

Yes I think the battery life will be okay for people, in most cases

and if not, they can buy the extra battery thingy, which you know will be expensive (which sucks) but atleast the option is there
