David Cage has told Eurogamer that Quantic Dream has begun work on the next generation of "technology".

The studio sacrificed Heavy Rain's Chronicles DLC in order to retrofit Move controls to the emotional thriller. But that hasn't prevented work on "risky" and "pioneering" future projects steaming ahead.

"Certainly not!" exclaimed Cage. "Most of the team currently works on the next generation of technology and future concepts. We plan to significantly improve the technology compared to Heavy Rain, continue to take risks and explore new grounds.

"Many people wondered why we were not 'milking the cow' after the success of Heavy Rain - why we were not creating a sequel for next Christmas. It may sound weird from the outside, but this is really not how I see my company. We genuinely try to be pioneers for this medium and discover new possibilities, which means taking more risks and not always giving people what they expect.

"It also means having creative freedom and going every day to the office with a big smile thinking you are really lucky to do what you do, and being proud of your games," he said.

Cage told Eurogamer yesterday he wasn't overjoyed at ditching the Chronicles add-ons. But creatively he has ants in his pants and the prospect of lingering on Heavy Rain any longer was unappealing and dejecting.

"I need the challenge, I need the thrill of a new idea, I need to fight to convince my team, feel the danger, feel the fear, feel the excitement of working on something you strongly believe in," he surged.

"I am probably stupid to think that way as it certainly makes my life more difficult, but I am still naïve enough to let my passion lead my choices."

At the start of June, reports leaked that claimed Cage was working on a science fiction thriller called Horizon. He isn't, but he told us he liked the concept.

"I don't know where this information comes from but there is no project called Horizon featuring a couple in a science-fiction world currently in development at Quantic Dream," confirmed Cage. "Though if the script is available it sounds like a good idea."

"As you know, I am not particularly secret about Quantic's projects. We will officially announce them as soon as we are ready."

Them?

Cage was at E3 last month to unveil Move controls for Heavy Rain. These will be part of a re-issue of Heavy Rain released later this year. A patch will be offered to existing owners to add Move support to their game.

The rest of E3 failed to excite Cage, whose crusade to attract a mature audience to videogames appears to be a lonely one.

"This year E3 was mainly for hardware, for Move, Kinect and 3DS. I saw many great games that I will buy for my son, few I will buy for myself," he told us.

"I continue to hope that our industry will one day seriously consider making games for an adult audience. Unfortunately, E3 showed little progress in this direction."
We might be seeing PS4 sooner than we think if they're working on next gen projects "now".

I didn't really care all that much for Heavy Rain but I still respect Quantic for having the balls to take risks, most devs these days don't

I dont think he was actually talking about the next generation of hardware. More like the next generation of the software they are using and what they can do with it.
You have to admire a company who actualy doesn't want to milk what they have created.
I personally can not wait to see what theses guys will come up with next.

I think quite a few devs will start to look into next-gen round this time, mainly being planning, and creating a new engine fit for next-gen consoles for the next couple of years. Then later start working on the games so they'll be ready for round the release off the new consoles. So its not really surpizing that Quantic Dream are already looking ahead

nope.. this gen is going to be longer than any other regular console cycle.

or maybe similar to 10 year cyle of PS2.

Reason:
1)game dev cost... Wayyy tooo big
2) core game market did not increase much to cover the increase in dev cost.
3) making games become riskier. alot of average games are struggling.
4) Less profit for publisher on non AAA games.
5) not enough tech jump as u seen on PS2 to PS3.
6) current global economy. not doing good.
and etc.

and many analysts think the same and agree that this cycle will be long for both PS3 and Xbox.

The next-generation is coming sooner than people want to believe or think.

David already working on a next generation project doesn't surprise me at all.

As long as the final product is as great as HR, then I am cool with him taking off to work on that. I would not mind seeing him do a mature and graphically awesome adult game for the 3DS in the interim though. :)

I doubt Sony would make that mistake again
I still don't think the PS4 will be here before 2014, they might be working on another console.
so a 9 YEAR(8 for PS3) console cycle, no freaking way we have a 9 year cycle, I think that we will see the next-gen from MS and Sony in 2012 and current gen for Nintendo Holiday 2011, a 7 year (6 for PS3) is still rediculously long, but not anywhere close to rediculous as a 9 year cycle, plus every PS console has had a 6 year cycle(PSOne was only 5 years outside of Japan, but still considered a 6 year cycle), and, if we see a PSP2, it will launch in 2011 making that a 6 year cycle as well...

Of course the PS4 will be in development, wether its simple conceptual stages or whatever, but as others have said, it doesn't mean it's coming soon. Sony said, in an article about a possible PSP2, that they are focussing on current technology and trying to make gains there. It just wouldn't make sense to have a PS4 coming "sooner than you think" as some here are stating.

Console generations are getting longer, because we have such things as ONLINE and FIRMWERE UPDATES.

Yeah new technology will come sometime soon, but consoles have to last longer - games cost so much to make and the console's hardware is only just starting to get to its limits

Maybe i was getting ahead of myself then with the PS4 comment but its admirable to see Quantic Dream so enthusiastic about creating new, better gaming concepts. I applaud people who take risks. I am yet to play Heavy Rain but im sure my first time will be interesting.
Next generation...wooh-boy!...

I mean, man...games cost $60 on average NOW!...I cringe when I start thinking about the possibility that they might cost even more next gen...
well they cost less than they did when we only had carts... remember the N64?$90 games($120 if you count inflation)... SNES games cost anywhere from $40-$80 when they came out(Between $62 and $125 with inflation)... so really, the cost of games now are actually quite a bit cheaper than previous generations(excpet perhaps last gen with the $50 price)

Next gen won't be soon, and the Wii changed the game, so next gen is going to be drastically different than this one.

It's not gonna be a power stats grab. It's going to be about expanding their customer bases and it won't be freakishly expensive this time.

What? Lmao, where were you living?...if my memory serves me, I remember most new games on the 64 costing around $40 to $50 ...and that's back when we weren't in such an economic slump (at least as far as I remember)...

In any case, I personally don't recall any game costing that much, unless it came with an Expansion Pack or some other kind of extra (Pokemon, Zelda)...Ocarina of Time was the most pricey game we ever paid for, and I bought it about a week after it released for about $80...I thought we were paying extra just because the cartridge was gold lol...full of glitches, tho...

Ah...memories...

I expect the PS4 to be relatively cheap. Sony won't be dropping the Cell anytime soon so expect an upgraded version of that in the PS4 along with Blu-Ray which will be much cheaper around the release of the console. In other words expect a heavily upgraded PS3.
yeh why not just make another heavy rain type game with current technology?
They most likely will, but it is good idea to spend some time researching current highend and what it brings.
DX11 and Shader model 5 class hardware will last for 3 years, so using it as a coarse target platform for a nextgen GPU is a good idea.

There is huge amounts of possibilities currently where on can take the future platforms and graphics will get a lot more diverse than it is today.

"I continue to hope that our industry will one day seriously consider making games for an adult audience. Unfortunately, E3 showed little progress in this direction."
Please somebody shut this man up! Games for adult audiences are here now, and I'm not talking about your call of duty's or Battlefields but you're Shadow of the colossus's and Metal Gears. To some they may seem childish but clearly these people have never watched a Ghilbi movie, Actually I bet this man's never watched a Ghilbli movie. David cage has an arrogant stereotypical western view of what adults enjoy and I suggest he stops making such stupid comments in public.

David cage is not an innovator he's making a highly polished visual novel or a film with choices true innovators in the video games industry use gameplay to innovate.

crappy rant over.

I'd really like another game like Heavy Rain. Maybe use the same type of game, with improvements of course, to existing franchises like "Law & Order", "NCIS" or even original movie games like another "Die Hard".

Or maybe even production companies that run those shows and make movies could hire them to program games of the like for them.

I am really happy for the success QD had with Heavy Rain. It shows that there is still room to innovate in the gaming industry and that new and risky concepts are rewarded. As most of the other posters mentioned, new technology doesn't always mean new hardware. I hope we won't see a new console generation in at least 4-5 years. I say that, because usually graphics are the main reason for hardware upgrade and so far the graphics quality we've been witnessing is more than satisfying. I bought FF13 yesterday and I was amazed at how incredible the game looked. I don't mind if games look like this in the next few years. I am perfectly happy with games looking like NWN2, KOTOR, Hitman 4, MGS3, Dragon Age, WoW, etc. I saw nothing breathtaking at this year's E3 and that's not a bad thing. Graphics will reach a limit and gamplay will take the main stage again. Until that happens I don't want a new console generation. Sorry for off-topic :D.

Yeah, back then consoles were WAY behind PCs, this gen they are much closer, see how the PS3-PC multiplats are identical? No other console has managed to keep up with the PC before the PS3 or 360, only game thats way ahead is Crysis. If they released a console in the next year or so, it would be completely pointless because what can they improve on other than RAM? Only other thing they can improve is graphics and they won't be that much better than the current PS3. So no, PS4 won't be here for a while yet IMHO, the next Nintendo console maybe but since Wii is selling so fantastically I doubt Nintendo is in any rush, MS may be the first to release next gen since 360 sales are started to slow right now except in America (before the slim, in a few weeks sales will be back to normal).
