Mulan: Just watch the animated version again.
I recognize the format they used here, and many will as well. It's like when you have a massive assignment to work on, but you have sweet F' all enthusiasm for the material. So you look at the marking criteria and follow that point for point just making sure you address what is being looked for in the hopes you squeak past. The story is shit. It makes a movie, but its a shit movie. This thing is basically all payoff, without any work. Story progression can essentially be summed up as Dialogue -> with immediate Payoff. Rinse, and repeat. Screw all that build up nonsense. For example: In the animated version, the entire movie takes place under this idea that mulan is there to save her father. Bring honour to the family and what not. At the end, our payoff is Mulan rocking up with her spoils of war, and the dad is like "Nah, that shits superficial, you're the real treasure". The movie doesn't even try this shit. It start out like that, then mulan just sorts "Mulans" you get some moment to moment bullshit where problems are solved by nodding your head in agreement, then she heads home, and the dad is like "i know a warrior coz im one as well". Bitch, you never set this up!? There's no 300 style opening where Mulan is getting some whoop ass to get her in shape, at most i think she get shouted at... once.
There seems to be this overarching woman's power thing at play... but at the end she bows down to the emperor regardless so what was even the point? The story was sacrificed for this message, yet there is no commitment to the message they put forward. I don't even know. If that's the message then go ham. Write the thing so that Mulan is empowered or whatnot.
I honestly don't know how you screw this up so bad when there was the already solid animated version. If there is a play at empowering woman, the animated version did it better, so just watch that one again.
The acting is bad, the action scenes are worse, the set up is pathetic: 0/10 Avoid.
