Superman Returns (Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey, Frank Langella). I've got a box with all the Superman movies up to this one, I bought it for the "original" Superman movies with Christopher Reeve. I finally got around to watch this one. It's an ok Superman movie over all, nothing more. The casting of Brandon Routh as Superman and Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor was a good choice, imo. Kate Bosworth really doesn't fit the role as Lois Lane, imo. I'm surprised that Bryan Singer couldn't do a better job with this, since he directed X-Men 1 & 2 and did a way better job with those, imo. A strong 5/10

Fury (Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Pena, John Bernthal). I was expecting a bit more from this movie. I really didn't feel the "brotherhood" feeling that they where going for (according to the extras on the disc), maybe a bit at the very end of the movie. The acting was quite good overall. It's an ok WW2 movie I guess, but not much more than that. 6/10

A Single Shot (Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Wright, Kelly Reilly, Jason Isaacs, Joe Anderson, William H. Macy). This movie has been lying around for quite a while in my "to watch" pile. I first saw Sam Rockwell in Moon (a really good movie and really good acting from Sam, imo) and I think I got this shortly after I had watched Moon. I don't know why I thought this was going to be a movie about a sniper, maybe it was the cover that fooled me? The acting is really good overall, Sam is really good in this one too. The movie itself is actually quite good, imo. I really wanted to know what was going to happen to Sam's character even though he wasn't exactly what you would call a good guy. So this movie lands somewhere around a strong 7/10 for me.

Yeah, that was my thought too. Brandon almost looks like a young Christopher Reeve. Kate Bosworth was definitely the worst casting choice in this movie, imo. And it kind of felt like the story wasn't up to the standard I hoped for at least.

I think Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor would've been good had he been given better dialogue / storyline.

American Sniper (Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Kyle Gallner). This is also a movie that's been lying around in my "to watch" pile for quite a while. Clint Eastwood behind the wheel, good acting and it's based on real people. Overall I really liked it. It's definitely not one of Clint Eastwoods best movies, but it's a solid movie, imo. I think it might be worth a strong 7/10 maybe.

All excellent films with great songs and stories. Obviously musicals are not for everyone, but I enjoy them.

Yeah, it's definitely an acquired taste. I'm not a big fan of the genre myself, but there are exceptions, like Sweeney Todd for example.

Yeah, I really like these movies. Too bad they don't include Animatrix any more. There used to be a box, way back, that included Animatrix. I've been holding off buying a Matrix box because I was hoping there would be another "complete" box released.

Watched the new Synder Cut version of Justice League last night. Way better than the Whedon version. It’s long, clocking over 4hrs, but I like all the additional character building and they make Steppenwolf enemy a much more formidable foe.

The special effects seemed to be updated, fixing the weird lip thing on Superman. Overall the DC movies are a mess, but I did enjoy this new director’s cut quite a bit more.

Just finished watching the new Mortal Kombat and talk about a snooze fest. Not even the fight scenes were that entertaining. And the use of the traditional Mortal Kombat techno song wasn't even that great. Overall, pretty disappointing. Luckily, I was able to watch it on HBO Max and save money by not going to the theaters.

The first half of the movie feels rushed with exposition and attempted character building and the second half doesn't even really show any kind of Tournament. The movie tries to show some kind of rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero and even that felt half baked. Kano is probably the most enjoyable character. That's about it. The original 90's Mortal Kombat movie was more entertaining and campy.

The Tomorrow War - 4/10

First 2/3 of the movie is your average 8/10 action flick. Budget (or lack of) shows in spots. Set up exists to move you from place to place. Action scenes are action-y. But in the last 1/3 the movie goes into free fall. Common sense seemingly vanishes, the plot becomes even more contrived, and characters the movie fails to build up die off to no fanfare.

I don't like 'time travel' movies for all the bs they try and peddle to make their story make sense. This one doesn't do anything to remedy that, and you can tell that the writers weren't interested in trying to solve any of these issues either. Ending their explanation with a resounding "Period!", and leaving every plot hole brought on by 'time travel' wide, and gaping open. The 2c reason they come up with is just as stupid as every other time travel movies explanation, if not more so.

The alien design is pretty ok however. They overplay their resilience to bullets a bit much when they're introduced, because they later go down no problem, but they're okay functionally even tho you can see the plot armour going up as scenes play out.

The Tomorrow War - 4/10

I watched Tomorrow War with my wife over the weekend. I liked it more than she did. I felt like while the premise surrounding time travel was dumb and didn't make sense, the action and creature designs were cool. The movie could've ended though after he went back to the present, rather than the extra 20-30 minutes of them all going to Russia. If you can get passed the time-travel story stuff, it's a fun action / sci-fi romp.

Recently watched the 2012 film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter on HBO Max. What a terrible movie. Lol. The CGI had high and low points, but I think the overall premise just kept me from liking the movie. Couldn't decide between it being irreverent and just plain ridiculous. I like Rufus Sewell as he usually plays a good villain, but he just seemed bored in this movie. Everyone else was forgettable.

Was bed ridden all weekend so managed to watch a couple of movies on netflix:

It's a stupid enough action romp. Stuff goes boom, characters quip witty one liners, the usual. But, this movie is so. damn. LONG!! I was sick so had no where else to be, but even i had enough of it.
Not to put my fellow Polynesians down, but the Samoan bit at the end was a bit... eh. You can tell Dwayne Johnson doesn't actually speak the slang used in the movie, so why force it? He speaks in typical american. Like when he says "uso", the 'O' he uses is similar to how you'd say "O.M.G", whereas the actual sound is closer to how you'd say the 'O' in "Oxford".
Happy that they get represented on the big stage but I dunno, it just seems odd to watch someone force it.

Kinda has it's 6/10 moments, and also has a few 4/10 moments. Same as above tho. Typical action romp, with a small fantasy/sci-fi twist. Easy enough to sit and follow along.

Going to go see Spider-Man No Way Home tonight in Dolby. And then I also got pre-sale tickets for Matrix Resurrections in IMAX for Thursday. Going to be a good week for movies.

Spider-Man No Way Home was easily the best movie of the year. Well written, great special effects and loved the nostalgic tie-ins with previous Sony Spider-Man films. Definitely want to see it again before it leaves theaters.

Matrix Resurrections was alright. Not what I expected, but I didn't dislike it. I had a hard time following what was going on in the beginning but by the middle / end of the movie it made more sense. The movie is very meta / self aware, maybe a little too much. The actions scenes didn't really impress me much either. I was hoping for more kung fu / better choreographed sequences, but instead felt like a choppy mess and Neo relied to much on his hand block powers.

I also watched "Don't Look Up" on Netflix recently. It does parody Republicans / Trump and carries an underlining Climate Action message, but overall it was still worth watching. A lot of A-list actors / actresses and was pretty funny. Plus, I always enjoy end of the world meteor / comet hitting earth movies.

If you released this at any other point in time, the movie would have been some pretty straight satire of the modern day western life. It's message clear, and it's humour kinda sharp. But damn if this isn't one of the saddest things you'll see put to film of late. It's almost a documentary...

Worth the watch tho.

Monster Hunter.

This became way longer than I expected. I'm not even a hardcore Monster Hunter fan, I've only played Monster Hunter World (and Iceborne), and really liked it. But even I was really disappointed after watching this movie.

Going in my expectations were quite low, but this movie managed even to go below my expectations. I was hoping it would at least be entertaining to watch for the action and effects and such, but no, not even that. I'm usually fine with "bad" movies as long as they have some kind of charm to them, but this one definitely doesn't have that.

I knew from the trailers that this movie was going to jump between the Monster Hunter universe and our world. I thought it sounded like a bad idea, and it was. It's a terrible attempt at making a Monster Hunter movie. It's not even that good as just an action movie, it doesn't even deliver on that.

There's absolutely no focus on anything, it's all over the place. They were trying to make a movie that would cater to both Monster Hunter fans and people who don't even know what Monster Hunter is. But they end up with a movie that feels like it isn't made for the Monster Hunter fans or non-fans.

The look of the monsters (the few that were in there) and the weapons was pretty much the only thing they got right. The action scenes were made more like car chase scenes than fights with big monsters. They got a lot of things wrong in general. Like killing Rathalos with fire for example. And there's so many things in general that doesn't make sense, where I just asked: why! None of the environments looked like it was part of the Monster Hunter universe, imo.

Poor Tony Jaa, he had the best character in the movie and didn't even get to be the main character (Milla Jovovich character was). Ron Perlman (who I normally like as an actor) looks and acts like a bum version of the Admiral.

Paul W.S. Anderson claims in the extras on the disc that he is a big fan of the Monster Hunter games, but I call BS on that. Uwe Boll would've been proud of this movie.

Luckily I didn't pay much for my (blu-ray) copy of the movie.

Gunpowder Milkshake (Karen Gillian, Lena Headey, Michelle Yeoh, Paul Giamatti, Ralph Ineson).

What mainly caught my attention when I saw the trailer was the cast and the type of movie it looked like it was going to be. I'm a big Michelle Yeoh fan (mainly from her Hong Kong/Chinese movie roles) and Lena Headey did a great job in Game of Thrones (as Cersei), imo.

A relatively low budget all female (main cast) John Wick type movie. You can clearly see where some of the inspiration came from here. John Wick first and foremost with some Quentin Tarantino, The Good The Bad The Ugly, Oldboy sprinkled in there. Unfortunately nothing reached up to the level of the movies it took inspiration from.

The writing is not the best, the acting ranged from really bad to ok and there was no depth to any of the characters and their relationships. But that can be expected to some degree in a movie like this. It maked up for it a little bit with its b-movie charm, imo. The best parts of the movie was definitely the cinematography, some of the characters and the action scenes.

So... if you don't have your expectations set too high when watching this movie, you might like it if you are into the type of movies it takes its inspiration from. I pretty much had no expectations going in and I found it to be quite entertaining. I would say it's worth somewhere between a (strong) 6/10 to a (weak) 7/10 for me personally.

The Drop (Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, James Gandolfini, Matthias Schoenaerts).

It's a crime drama/thriller. It's kind of a slow burn, especially in the beginning, but that's not necessary a bad thing if it's done well. And in this case it's done well, imo.

The acting overall is really good, especially from the main cast (and Matthias Schoenaerts). The characters are really interesting, imo. It has good production value with good atmosphere and cinematography. This is definitely not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but if you are into this genre and don't mind a slower pace, I can really recommend this movie. To me this was a little bit of a hidden gem. It's not masterpiece level and it's probably not going to be concidered a classic in the future, but it's a really good movie, imo.
