Size Of The Universe (Shocking)

"The Universe is so huge in fact that we?ll have to play around with scales so one can get a better idea.

According to the standard inflationary model of cosmology, the visible portion of our universe, the one mapped by our telescopes is an infinitesimally small speck in a much larger universe of at least 10 to the power 35 light-years across!

Admittedly this number is really, really big, and almost impossible to imagine. So lets shrink everything down, WAY down, just so we can get a better grasp of it. Let's imagine that the entire universe that we have seen in all the worlds telescopes, all the galaxies, all trillion of them, extending out 13 billion light years in every direction is shrunk down to the size of a golf ball.

If we do a volume calculation, the actual universe contains 10 to the power 60 of those golf balls! Wow, I guess we didn't shrink things down far enough, but this will have to do. So how big a volume would 10 to the power 60 golf balls fill up? Try a sphere 850 light years across! So imagine a mass of golf balls that big, and each one of those golf balls contains all the stars and galaxies that we can see through our telescopes!!

Now let?s try it with speed. Ready? Imagine traveling so fast that you can go from on end of the galaxy to the other in just one second. At this speed the entire galaxy would be in reach before you can say the word "go", and wham, you're there. At this speed, you could travel to the nearest galaxy Andromeda in 22 seconds flat. And you could cross from end of the visible universe to the other in 72 hours.

So, lets speed up our warp vehicles again, so that we can travel a quintillion light years every second. At such a speed we could cross the known universe 100 million times in one second.

How long would it take to cross from one side of the universe to the other?
.......................... 3.7 billion years!!!"

GOD ALMIGHTY !!!!!!!!!!!!!! x 10000

We can only presently see sh*t +/- 13 billion light years away and beyond that is more galaxies to be discovered .

It hurts my head just to think of the scale of the whole universe even shrunk down to such a small scale .

Don't forget the universe is still expanding , infact the expansion is speeding up according to recent findings by scientists .

Crickey moses !!! I need a good strong alcoholic drink .

Even if those numbers cant be proven , we do all know the universe is huge and yes with weed and shrooms you can think of alot funny things , scenarios

Wow.... I don't believe that that's accurate.... but I know the universe is humongousgiaganticHUGE.

 I guess so but i didn't start the thread to say its 100% fact . I just posted cause i found it interesting .

Fact is we can see 13 billion light years out . We can't see any further than that cause we haven't developed telescopes that can see any further . Kind of like when your in the middle of the ocean , you can only see as far as the horizon until you start moving in a direction you'll see more .

Recent observations put the size at over 70 billion light years , thats considerably more than the 13 billion we know of today . The Cosmic Microwave Backround Radiation data puts an estimate of 156 billion light years across (according to Space.com)
*LINK* :http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/mystery_monday_040524.html

The CMB probe was designed to measure microwave emitted at the time of the big bang but you can read more about it in the link i provided .

The sheer size is truely staggering . Heck , the observeable universe (13 billion light years across) is large enough . When more powerful telescopes are completed our little 13 billion light year bubble will increase but geez there'd be so much more out there to discover .

Whens that new telescope that suppose to be better than hubble being launched? I remember reading about it like yesterday....I believe it was like 2015 or something.

I think you're talking about the James Webb Space Telescope . I don't know when its gonna be launched but its suppose to replace Hubble . And yes its bigger and more powerful than Hubble but there are a few truely monstrous ground-based telescope projects in the pipeline .

With the huge distances in space its impossible to travel to other stars even with the speed of light (if we could go that fast) which is rediculously slow when it comes to interstellar travel .
 Voyager 1 which has been going at something like 45 000 mph since like the 1970's has only just reached the termination shock (the boundry of the suns gravitational pull) just beyond pluto . Even at that insane speed it would take eons to reach Promixa Centuri (the nearest star) .

Yeah I read about that like 2 years ago just reaching kuiper belt , which is first the end of the gravitational pull or kuiper belt?

Its impossible to reach the end of the universe, its too big and expands too fast.

We have no chance of reaching the speed of light. Space is too big to imagine.

That is a matter of opinion I doubt it but it can happen. In the next thousand years 300,000km/s (the speed of light) might be highway speed!

Well its not impossible, but I doubt we ll reach that speed.

The hubble Ultra Deep field.
Yep that is simply mind blowing the number of galaxies in that picture . Awesome stuff . I think i'll save it to mac and use it as a wallpaper . Thanks for sharing that with us :D

@OKLondon :
Problem is that when you reach speed of light you need infinate amounts of energy and time slows down .
I found a great site that explained what breakthroughs mankind needed to reach light speed or atleast come close to it .
One of the breakthroughs needed is an abundant energy source to propel a spacecraft and another is a better understanding of spacetime in such a way that we can manipulate the very fabric of space .
Its a damn tall order to get to light speed and reach the stars but so was breaking the sound barrier or going to the moon . Although saying that the light speed nut is a hell of a one to crack .

Thank you now i have some much questions in my head that wont be able to be answered...It so hard to imagine the infiniteness of the universe

Well, considering that you're from India, your wiener is much smaller than everyone's.

Just Kidding! ;)

next time any of u guys have a buzz think about this question.
where does space end?? it dont
we are just a little planet stuck in space and space keeps going and going
and going.. lol it makes u think when u are buzzed lol
