Sony Discount 3G Vita in Japan

#1
Earlier this week, Amazon Japan started a campaign which gave a ¥2000 discount to those who bought a PlayStation Vita 3G model along with at least one game. The campaign started on February 15 and will run through March 31.

While Amazon and other retailers often run such bundle campaigns, it turns out that this may actually be an official Sony campaign. Multiple smaller retailers have reported that Sony has given them instructions to begin the same campaign on the 23rd (yes, there seems to be some annoyance that Amazon gets to start it earlier).

It's unclear if Sony will give publicity to the campaign, with an official name and campaign website, or if the campaign will be handled by retailers themselves. We should find out next week when the campaign expands to all retailers.

It's worth noting that the campaign only applies to the 3G model. Amazon is still offering this as the first run limited edition, which includes a pre-paid 3G usage card. The system's MSRP is ¥29,980, but Amazon discounts it to ¥26,707. (Amazon offers similar discounts on most systems, although the percentage varies.)

And so it begins!

Yeah well was bound to happen, price cuts worked somewhat for the 3DS it will work for the Vita too.

But to be honest it's all about the games. As soon as the 3DS got some top quality games it started to sell well, I'm sure the Vita will be the same

Dindn't 3ds only start to sell well after a massive price drop?

It's a start but they need monster hunter and a price drop to really get things started. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD bundled with Vita and a price drop is the only way they're moving a significant number of units anytime soon. I'm pretty sure Capcom is working on that port and will release soon.

PSP did a lot better, at a similar price and a worse launch line up, but it didn't have the competition off smartphones and tablets.

Well when they dropped the price, some good games started coming out too so it was a combination of the two, but the price drop was probably the driving force yes, which I did mention
Oh-oh. If they ever drop the price for Vita, i hope they don't sell it at a loss.
In the long run, it's better for them. It helps them move hardware, and thus the production costs will lower. Also, they'll be selling many more games. They did the same thing with PS3. Even if they sold it at $600 at first, they were already taking heavy losses, but the production costs managed to decrease and help them lose even less money with every sale.

There we go!

Sure the price cut helps any console but it's software which really counts! The west is yet to receive the biggest selling launch title the 3DS had in Japan. It did 300K+ copies in it's first week, basically if you bought a 3DS in Japan you bought that with it!

+Rep to who ever guesses or Googles. But don't Google cause that breaks the fun!

Vita will get it's upward curve in Japan when Persona hits. FFX remaster will also go down a treat.

The problem is, what will be the Super Mario 3D Land + Mario Kart 7 + Monster Hunter 3G combo for Vita that would revitalize its sales? Vita already HAS awesome games (3DS's launch offerings are weak in comparison), yet it still fails to sell. Everybody's Golf 5 for PS3 sold 150k in its first week in Japan, EG6 for Vita only 60k copies. Gravity Rush is seriously some GOTY material, yet it failed to even sell 50k copies during its first week. And Nintendo is having all the Monster Hunter 4s, Kingdom Hearts 3Ds and whatnot that were previously on PSP. Call of Duty could be it in at least North America, but what about Japan? I dunno, personally I think Vita needs Gran Turismo. That would give hype amongst gamers that (sadly) niche titles like Gravity Rush, Wipeout 2048 and such can't.

The pricedrop really didn't do much for 3DS's sales (this was ~3 months pre-Marios etc.). It would probably have sold almost as well even without one (or a much smaller one) once big hitters like 3D Land, Kart 7 and Monster Hunter started dropping.
