The New York Times yesterday reported that Sony is set to spend $50 million on the marketing campaign for the soon to be released PlayStation Vita. This will mark the largest amount of money Sony has dropped on a marketing campaign for one of their platform launches, according to SCEA's senior director, John Koller.Sony’s campaign, dubbed “Never Stop Playing,” will be seen across billboards, TV commercials, retail partnerships, and more. Sony is even touting a heavy focus on social media advertising as well, coining following hashtag for twitter promotion: #gamechanger.
Apparently, ad space has been purchased to air during television shows like South Park, The Simpsons, Tosh.0, and even during basketball (professional and college) games.
We’ve yet to see an official commercial advertisement for the Vita on television but we’ll let you know when one pops up.

That's good to hear, though I think they needed to start advertising the PS Vita too the general public earlier.
Lets hope SCEE does something similar.

EDIT: look what SCEE has JUST posted on the EU PS blog!

At least it's better than this:

Altough the ad campaign is coming a bit to late and 50M is not really that much considering what MS usually spends.
Just for comparasion, Microsoft spend about 500M advertising kinnect and Nintendo 200M with Wii's launch campaign. Those numbers are a bit shy on Sony's part.

Good for them. They make great systems, great games, but they have most decidedly sucked in the marketing dept. They shoulda been doing this a month ago.

They might air this tonight during the Champions League football matches, since Sony sponsor it.
Why only $50 million?.. That is such a small amount.
Highest they've ever spent, according to them ^_^

Would be a good move. I think the boardings around the CL games tonight will also have PSVITA instead of PS3

To me that sounds like a lot of money to spend on marketing a handheld but then again I don't really know the average cost for marketing a console, handheld or game!

I agree that this seems a bit late though, should of been seeing adverts weeks ago, unless they have something up their sleeve...
I guess Sony isnt hurting as bad as everyone thought if they can still put together an expensive marketing campaign like that.
That is not a very expensive campaign. And Sony is actually doing very poorly. The issue isn't that they don't have money. The issue is the fact that they have been bleeding red with much difficulty turning profits around.

wow that is an awesome advert. wish they had done it sooner, so that more people bought the ps vita, that would interest all those game devs to join into the ps vita game development..

The UK ad seems to be a big step above the US ones.
Too bad they wont just scrap them and use the UK ones in both territories
