Sony's Google TV Remote Looks Crazy

Sony spared no button in the design of its Google TV remote. This is a screengrab Engadget pulled from an ABC News segment on Google TV.
We hope this complicated remote doesn't foreshadow how complicated Google TV will be to use.

If you're just considering a remote for a simple media device (TV, DVR, DVD/BD), it's a little complex BUT GTV is a media hub, internet device (browser, social media), so having an effective text input device makes a ton of sense.

Even Motorola (and a couple of others) have new remotes coming out that look like a traditional TV/Box remote on one side, but you flip it over and it has a whole querty setup to facilitate text entry.

I'm registered over at Logitech for release info for their flavor of GTV!

Hmm can't see people wanting that but we'll see.

Another thing don't you need to look at this to use it and you need to use both hands, thats the last thing I want to do in front of my TV.

Complicated? What the **** are you talking about? Are the reviewers and everyone above me stupid?

It's a hell of a lot less complicated than some of the common Audio receiver controls I've seen and that's not hard to navigate once you look at them and go "ok this button switched through audio settings, this one through inputs, etc". It's like adding a keyboard suddenly makes something difficult. The damn device is so straight forward.

Seriously, did you actually look at the pic? Sure it may not be the best in terms of design but functionality it's so simple. Keyboard on bottom, traditional remote on top. Hell its more like an Xbox controller with it's keyboard addon.

Poeple moan and ***** over stupid things just because they can sometimes.

I'm amazed some people can function in ordinary life if they think this is complicated.

I also fail to see how complicated it is, it's overwhelming to look at from a design perspective, but figuring out function seems simple. It's a remote/keyboard all in one. It's just not a very pretty remote all in one.

Let me put it another way. It looks way too complicated. Not saying that it is complicated by any stretch. But having that many buttons makes it look overwhelming. Think about it. iPad. iPhone. People don't want to see a whole whack of buttons. Even the Blackberry Torch (their flagship) is hiding away the buttons.

So again, it's not complicated. It just looks that way. LOL

It's like that country song.

"She ain't pretty, she just looks that way..." LOL

You need to use two hands, do I need to say more?

This is what the Roku box remote looks like:

Exactly this.

There aren't that many buttons, and the remote is even simpler than the common TV and Audio receiver remote. The Samsung downstairs for example... has buttons on it that we are likely to never press.

This remote has a fully Qwerty keyboard on it. You can't have a full keyboard on a remote without it looking overcomplicated.

What this remote does look like is that it's very easy to use when navigating.

You don'y need two hands. Even if it was absolutely required in all instances, why is this an issue? Why is this such a big deal and inconvenience?

Clearly you and me have very different opinions on design, which is fine.

Because when I'm watching a movie or a good show more often than not I have something to eat or drink, I don't want to use my both hands then. I hate using the DS3 for the PS3 when I watch BD that's why I got the remote for the PS3. I just don't like it but that's a personal thing though.

Isnt it for internet based tv's that can access youtube and google etc? Need to type to search for what you want, or you could use a pc with a keyboard.

I guess, don't know if I need a full qwerty keyboard for that though. Clearly this is for people that want more of a computer then at TV box though.

Yeah, thats why i think a mobile phone style keypad with the letters on the normal numbers working better and being alot easier for most people to use, because they have used those before anyway.

something kind of like that

Dude, what happened to your other sig? That one was soooo much more entertaining! I guess the orgasm experience must be 10.5 and higher, because I haven't experienced that with an Apple computer yet!

Gassée, the quote is accurate. If you don't deliver something extraordinary nobody will care.

I guess you could modify his quote to say that, but it seems a little fanatical to me. No consumer electronics device is better than the greatest orgasm.
