Is there anyway you can somehow get the demo on your PC, disconnect your PC from the net, take it to another house and use this method (or simialr) to put the demo on someone else's PS3 without being connected to the net?

If that makes sense.

You get a demos onto a PC. Demos cannot be copied form PS3 to PS3 either. They must be downloaded on the PS3 and played on the same PS3.

Sounds like a no then but I'll try and clarify just in case.

What's happening here (I think) is your PS3 is connecting to the net through your pc (a proxy server). Is there anyway to capture the demo on your PC and then disconnect from the net. Then take your PC (in this case a laptop) to your mates house who doesn't have the internet and somehow fool his PS3 into thinking it's connecting to the net through your PC (the proxy sever) so he can download the demo onto his PS3 and play it.

Basically it's getting a demo onto a PS3 that hasn't got net connection.

I think they're a bit tight with demos me, you should be able to burn 'em to discs and install 'em. I suppose they're too worried about hacking and stuff though.

Unfortunately, i don't think that there is a way for the PC to "intercept" (or "capture" as you put it) the demo. But that's just me. Maybe someone more more intelligent and/or informed than me could give you a better answer :).

I set mine up and the PS3 detected the proxy without any errors fine, but the icon wouldn't turn green, so I tried re-starting both the PC and the PS3 like someone suggested. The Privoxy icon turned green for about 30 seconds then changed back to blue, is this how it should work or should it stay green?

EDIT: Looks like the proxy is running how it should be, because when I close privoxy the download stops, then when I re-open it, it starts again. Looks as though I got a very slight increase out of it, any increase is good news I guess.

PS3 Proxy actually lists the download links, you start a download on the ps3, stop it, the goto PS3 Proxy, check the logs nad the download link for th e.pkg file will be there. You can then save it to your pc.

Don't know about installing off of external media though!

Nice workaround, although it's going to mess up more than a few people who haven't switched from using DHCP to a static local IP address...

Presumably it isn't going to work unless your router has UPnP enabled (bad) or you've set it up to forward port 8118?

I feel your pain.

Luckily, I am switching to 20MB Virgin Media BB for the KZ2 Release date!

I've updated the OP with LionelHutz's static IP information, and a disclaimer!

[QUOTE="x-DarthTater-x, post: 0]I tried the proxy solution but I've actually seen a bigger improvement by setting the transmission rate on my wireless router. The default transmission rate is Auto but I increased my download speed from about 250kb/s to 1mb/s when setting the rate to 11 Mbps. [/quote]
If you're hitting 1MB/s already then you're probably not experiencing the slow-mo downloads that some of us do and this probably wouldn't help. You might want to try enabling frame burst on your router though. Also if you have no a/b wifi type devices on your network you could force it to broadcast in G only, usually worth a little speed.

I know it shows otherwise in the video I posted but I have UPnP disabled, and my ps3 is in a DMZ. A friend and I are playing around with the port fowarding right now though, his ps3 was port forwarded and we had a video freeze on his end during video chat. He then put his ps3 in a DMZ and it worked fine after that, we're still troubleshooting trying to figure everything out.

I believe so =]

Hey!
I have tried to download the proxy software, but I don't know which one to download?
I am running Vista.

A few weeks ago, I could download around 5MB/sec.
Last week my PSN downloads slowed right down. It took me 8 hours to download the KZ 2 demo. It was downloading around 1MB/30 seconds.

I did the proxy thing and now it downloads around 1MB/3 seconds. It's still not as fast as I would like, but it's a huge improvement.
Thanks!

IT WORKS =D

But when my parents turn off the PC I'll just go back to the normal way if I want to go online.

But still, the results are amazing.

In using a proxy server you're simply routing traffic from your PS3 through your PC and, in this case, directing it to use port 8118. If your router isn't explicitly set to forward 8118 to the machine running the proxy, or doesn't have UPnP enabled to open the port on request, then I can't see how you're getting any internet connectivity at all? I'm assuming your PC isn't in the DMZ, which would be a very Bad Thing™.

A friend and I are playing around with the port fowarding right now though, his ps3 was port forwarded and we had a video freeze on his end during video chat. He then put his ps3 in a DMZ and it worked fine after that, we're still troubleshooting trying to figure everything out.
If it worked at all then you probably have the correct port(s) forwarded and there was just a glitch in the matrix. DMZ should be fine for the PS3 but that won't help if you choose to use a proxy.

Hey u just gave me an idea!
Do u own a PSP?
I am having a hard time get internet to my PSP and try everything!
So let me know if u have a PSP
thanks man

I'll be back later tonight or tomorrow.

What we're going to do here is create a local web proxy on your pc for your ps3 to connect to the internet/psn through rather than straight through your router

What you'll need:
  • A decent pc (nothing too old, any moderately powerful pc should be able to handle this)
  • At least a 10/100 router (most are), a 10MB switch might not be able to handle all the network traffic this will cause.
  • A static IP address on your PC (if you don't know how to do this click the reveal tab for LionelHutz's guide on setting a static IP address in Windows.) You'll need to know this address later on.
  • A program called 'Privoxy', very small and only uses 5k ram.
  • A little bit of reading and time, not much don't worry.
How to set a static IP in windows: [reveal]1. Start > Run > cmd.exe2. Type ipconfig /all. You will see:[reveal]
[/reveal]

3. Leave this window open (you will need the information in it to set up a static IP).

4. Start > Right Click "My Network Places" > Properties: [reveal]

[/reveal]

5. You will see a section called, "LAN or High-Speed Internet". In that section, right click the icon representing your active connection (you may only have one icon). Then choose properties: [reveal]

[/reveal]

6. Under the heading, "This connection uses the following items:", highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". Then, click "Properties".
[reveal]
[/reveal]

7. Circle the bubble "Use the following IP address" [reveal]

[/reveal]

8. In "IP address", enter the static IP address that you would like. To avoid problems (likely you want to change only the last number of the IP address), I recommend using the same IP address that your computer is currently using (as shown in the CMD.exe window you opened in the first few steps).

9. Under "Subnet mask," enter it exactly as you see it in the CMD.exe window.

10. Under "Default gateway", enter it exactly as you see it in the CMD.exe window.

11. Under "Preferred DNS server", enter it exactly as you see it under "DNS servers" in the CMD.exe window. Note, you may only have one DNS server listed in the CMD.exe window. If so, leave the "Alternate DNS server" blank. If you have two in the CMD.exe window, enter the second under "Alternate DNS server".

12. Click "OK"

13. Click "OK"

Hope this helps some people![/reveal]

How to install and configure privoxy and your PS3[reveal]

Okay First up you can download privoxy HERE (choose your operating system)
After you download it just install it, you should have a privoxy program window pop open.

  1. In the privoxy program window that's opened up now you'll need to go to the Options menu and select 'Edit Main Configuration', this will open a notepad window.
  2. Scroll down the window till you see a line that says "listen-address 127.0.0.1:8118" (this will be one without the # in front of it)
  3. Now you'll need to edit the "127.0.0.1" with your PC's computer's IP address, the :8118 part should stay.
  4. After you've edited the file click the the 'file' option at the top, hit "save", and then 'file' again and 'exit'. (I'd recommend exiting privoxy and restarting it to make sure these changes take effect)

If you have a firewall on your computer you need to allow access to Privoxy on port 8118. If you still have trouble connecting try turning the firewall off to test the proxy (you might need to configure your firewall or use a different one)

  1. Now go to your ps3, open the Network settings tab then to edit your internet connection settings, you'll leave them the same *until* you hit the option "Use Proxy Server".
  2. When you get to this option click YES.
  3. Now under the next window you'll need to punch in your PC's IP address in the top window.
  4. On the bottom window you'll need to enter "8118" for the port.
  5. Finish up your settings, click save and then test. You should get internet connection, psn connection, all that stuff as 'successful'.
  6. If you don't double check the file editing you did earlier, your firewall, and your ps3 settings and try again.

Now that you're all setup hit the playstation store and try a download, make sure you go to the download management section under network to actually see how fast your download is going. I personally noticed a very nice jump in speed and consistency, I downloaded the lego batman demo for the psp (59MB) in about 50 seconds flat which works out to about 1.1MB/s... and this download speed hasn't waivered since I've done this. [/reveal]

Now you might be wondering why this works... and why some people report great speeds all the time and why some don't. Personally I'm not too sure but I think it might have something to do with ISP throttling people's bandwidth over certain ports/protocols. My other guess is the PS3 is picky about the data it receives (size of data chunks perhaps?) and maybe something happens to it coming through the internet for some people and thus slows the download speed down. I'm not sure as I said, anybody who understands networking better than I do feel free to chime in.

I'm also not too sure how this will affect your online gaming, I personally noticed a little less 'hiccups' while trying out SFIIHDR CoD:WaW. I think that due to the way the traffic is routed you will probably see a small increase in ping times (probably about 10ms or so) Keep in mind that if this doesn't work for you or it screws you speeds up you can just redo your network connection and change the proxy setting to 'NO' to return it to normal (don't forget to uninstall privoxy if you don't need it) The other downside to this is that you'll need your PC running to be able to access the net/network on your ps3.

Alrighty guys, try it out and please post your results up here. Good luck!

Dude are you talking about a proxy site, what kids use to get on myspace at school?

This is a server. Look... its simple

1. Download the thing, go on the site, downloads, bottom download, then gives you two options, pick the top one.

2. Load it up then go to the main config

3. scroll down to the LISTENING ADDRESS, at the bottom youll have the listening address on its own, (not the default one) .

4. Go to START > RUN > CMD (command) Type in the IPconfig and it will come up with your IP address.

5. Copy the IP and replace it with the listening addres (NOT the last bit :8118, leave that)

6. FILE > SAVE IT.

7. close it and just leave it up.

8. Go on your wireless settings on your ps3, do all the normal things, until you get to Proxy (THE VIDEO) copy the data in, listening address and the 8118 (may be different for you)

9. test it and it should work...

And i do believe you need to keep turning it on and off to get on the internet with the PC not on. I woke up this morning and it didnt let me on untill i loaded Proxxy.

My hand hurts now... grrr. Hope it helps.

It just looks like you type "CMD.exe2" instead of "cmd.exe".
