You don't need to type "cmd.exe" Just cmd.
I have Vista though, maybe It's different for me.
No, you don't need to type the ".exe". I guess I'm just used to putting in file extensions working so much with .s (assembly files) lately.
In using a proxy server you're simply routing traffic from your PS3 through your PC and, in this case, directing it to use port 8118. If your router isn't explicitly set to forward 8118 to the machine running the proxy, or doesn't have UPnP enabled to open the port on request, then I can't see how you're getting any internet connectivity at all? I'm assuming your PC isn't in the DMZ, which would be a very Bad Thing™.

If it worked at all then you probably have the correct port(s) forwarded and there was just a glitch in the matrix. DMZ should be fine for the PS3 but that won't help if you choose to use a proxy.
Yes I understand basically how it works. I do not have any port fowarding set for port 8118 (won't have to since my ps3 is in a DMZ). As far as I can remember I've never had to use port forwarding for anything within the local network, only going outbound to the WAN.

And no my PC is not in the DMZ ;)
Bugggg found ***

Woke up, started my ps3 and it didnt sign me in..

Started my PC up and it did... So its looking like were going to have to keep changing the settings everytime we want to download somthing ***
Your PC must be on and Privoxy must be loaded before using online in your PS3.
Rekmon, in the Static IP part of the OP, you may want to place a space between steps one and two. It just looks like you type "CMD.exe2" instead of "cmd.exe".

EDIT - Sorry for the double post. I accidentally hit "quote" on my above post as opposed to "edit".
I edited it up, thanks!
For me it turns green everytime you load a new webpage..I think that means it is working..
I never noticed, my PC is kinda far away from my PS3 so...
I'm thinking about taking an old junk laptop (dell p3) and running the proxy on it, just so I can mess around with the settings while near my ps3 to see if I can tweak the proxy for better results.

Thanks to everybody trying this out and posting your results. Please make sure you try to game, video chat, and download using this to see the difference and post any issues up so the rest of us know.

I'm going to try remote play over the internet later guys to see how this effects it, I'll let you know what's up with it.
So, when i am on ps3 does my pc need to be on?
Hey Dualbang, finally found the thread eh

Yes your PC will have to be on when you do this (and have the privoxy program loaded) It's the one major drawback to this solution.

Same here, but unless you're downloading a file on the ps3 the person on the PC shouldn't notice the difference (online gaming doesn't use that much bandwidth)

Now that would be a problem....
(which is why I'm going to use an old junk laptop I have to run the proxy on to avoid that)
Dude are you talking about a proxy site, what kids use to get on myspace at school?

This is a server. Look... its simple

1. Download the thing, go on the site, downloads, bottom download, then gives you two options, pick the top one.

2. Load it up then go to the main config

3. scroll down to the LISTENING ADDRESS, at the bottom youll have the listening address on its own, (not the default one) .

4. Go to START > RUN > CMD (command) Type in the IPconfig and it will come up with your IP address.

5. Copy the IP and replace it with the listening addres (NOT the last bit :8118, leave that)

6. FILE > SAVE IT.

7. close it and just leave it up.

8. Go on your wireless settings on your ps3, do all the normal things, until you get to Proxy (THE VIDEO) copy the data in, listening address and the 8118 (may be different for you)

9. test it and it should work...

And i do believe you need to keep turning it on and off to get on the internet with the PC not on. I woke up this morning and it didnt let me on untill i loaded Proxxy.

My hand hurts now... grrr. Hope it helps.
i did all that but nothing. also im direct connected to the router. shouldn't make a difference right? well ill try again.

Tried it and it works great most of the time. Sometimes, it still kind of download slow though. Just a quick question, but does your PS3 IP address need to be the same as the computer in which Privoxy is installed in?

If you make them the same, you will have problems.

You'll have issues like the above poster said, like IP collision and such, and windows will fight with your ps3, and usually it will win the battle, so you'll get no connection on your ps3. Windows has a way of being boss over a network collision battle, unless its with another PC..i've had this happen with vista / xp both trying to use the same, turns out the vista pc (my laptop) changed its ip to a totally different netmask (instead of the 192.168 string, it went to 10.0.0.1..)

There are only 3 ranges of addresses you can use according to the IANA, they are:
192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255
10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255

Anything other than that is outside the Private networking range for IP addressing.

I'm using it on my desktop, and have not powered up my ps3 just yet to see if there is any change.

My connection:

Bellsouth 6meg dsl, live next door to the dslam for our community/area, and also have a bellsouth buddy who installs dsl that cut me dead outside on the pole so I would connect better....will report back my findings when I use the ps3.

However, on my laptop, I'm not using the program, and just connecting wirelessly to the router, like usual..instead of putting the proxy info into firefox on my laptop..that way I can use both. I might change the info here if I see the desktop is performing better than my laptop is...but I cannot see where I'd benefit from it just yet.

Port forwarding is not needed within a local network, unless perhaps you're using a bridge. Your PS3 being in the DMZ should be irrelevent if it's set to use the proxy, but your router will need to forward 8118 to your PC if it doesn't have UPnP enabled. That is my understanding, I'm surprised it's worked for as many people as it has.

This is just so awesome.

Above, I reported a two-fold speed increase on my wired 60GB PS3. Well, I just applied the settings to my wireless 40GB PS3, and I saw a speed increase between 5 and 6 times! I can finally use the PSN video service on that PS3 :).
