Strange message on PS3 after changing hard disc.

I recently put a larger hard disc in my PS3. Last night when I switched the PS3 on it said something like "this is not the correct hard drive, please connect the correct drive". Which freaked me out quite a bit, so I switched off the PS3 and switched it back on and it started as normal.

Now it was freezing cold in my house yesterday(cannot afford gas after buying the new hard disc) but could a cold room affect the PS3 or the new drive?

And has anyone else had this message since upgrading the PS3 drive?

:suspect:

Never heard of this problem before. Was the new HDD really a new one or was it used in another PS3 before?
Try formatting the new one using the PC (or PS3 if possible) and try again. I don't think that the cold could affect the PS3 or HDD in this way...

Wouldn't it be wiser to spend the money on gas instead of a new HDD? Your PS3 obviously still works with the old one...

When I replaced mine it said something wierd also. It actually wouldnt let me upgrade because it was talking about Old Firmware and it wasnt connecting to the internet to download the new firmware. So I had to download it off the internet.

This is normal. You have to do a firmware upgrade immediately when upgrading the drive. You get that by downloading to a memory stick, putting the update in the proper folder and running it from there.

To the OP, I've never heard of that. I doubt the temp had anything to do with it. It would have to be freezing literally for the HD to be affected in a weird way. Sounds like your upgrade isn't exactly right. I would try doing a backup to an external and re-formatting the HDD with the PS3
You would rather freeze to buy a new hard drive?
Well I lied, I could not afford gas because I bought too much beer. :snicker

It has not happened since, so I'm just putting it down to the PS3 being too cold. I had not used it for a few days either.

How cold was it exactly? I live in Arizona and when I go out to my car in the morning and try and turn on my ipod (accidentally leaving it in the car the night before) the screen wont even come up, but all the clicks are still there. It's about 30-40 degrees I suppose.

I've read about a few people having this problem after upgrading their HDD(actually thought there was a thread on this forum about it), seems to come up randomly, but then it works fine after a restart. Personally I've never had this problem after upgrading to a 250GB HDD.

i dont want to alarm anyone but there are 2 reason for that message.

1. after a certain firmware version, the system bios is not entirely situated in the flash ROM, some or rather a large part of it resides on the hard drive. after an upgrade since that data is not there anymore you get that message. when rebooting the partial data in flash ROM re-writes the missing data to the hard drive in a clean slate status.

2. when upgrading the hard drive, the new drive may not have been properly seated with in the enclosure. to prevent a mishap in the future it is recommended to power down the system and remove and reseat the hard drive firmly in place.

I think everyone who upgrades is going to get that message at least once. I know I got it once after I upgraded to 320gb and havent seen it again.

Here's what's going on, to the best of my recollection. The PS3 takes a SATA drive right. Well there are different version of SATA, much akin to how there's USB 1.0 annd USB 2.0 there is SATA 1 and SATA 2. The PS3 has a SATA 1 controller in it. Most modern SATA drives you get will have SATA 2. They of course will work with SATA 1 devices but they will usually have to auto-detect what mode to run in.

The "handshake period" between the HDD and the PS3 is rather short. So sometime when you start it up the HDD won't be running in SATA mode in time for the PS3 to recognize it. You can get rid of the problem altogether on some HDD by installing a jumper that automatically sets it to run in SATA 1 mode. If not turning the PS3 off then on again will get it working perfectly again.

That's what I found out when I did research before installing a new HDD. I would have installed a jumper, but I really couldn't have been bothered. The issue doesn't happen often enough to warrant opening the system up again.
