The Getaway PS3 still in the works + feature film?

It has been quite some time since we’ve heard a peep from Sony about their London-based crime drama franchise, The Getaway. The series third iteration (fourth if you count the PSP edition) for the Playstation 3 was shown at E3 2005, then at E3 2006, but not a word of it since. Though the same demo was shown both years, The Getaway PS3’s rendering of bustling London was incredible, and confirmed to be real-time. Truly a sight to behold on the then-debuting PS3 hardware. Many feared The Getaway PS3 was shelved or delayed into oblivion because of the complete lack of coverage of the game since E3 2006. Fast forward to 2008, the game’s hazy release date.

Denofgeek recently interviewed Katie Ellwood, one of the writers of The Getaway and its sequel. Ellwood reaffirms that the game is still in production and that Sony is toiling away on the gritty, open-world franchise. The 2008 release date was not mentioned. Not much else info is given, as the interview actually pertains to the subject of games approaching cinematic appeal, through visuals, storytelling, and believability. Ellwood also hints at a feature film in the works that is being drafted by the Team Soho writers. Please give us the game first!

The Getaway debuted on the PS2 in 2003 and received lackluster reviews. The game was clunky and bug-ridden, though it was more like a proof-of-concept: games as cinema. Evoking wise-guy British crime films and not pulling any punches regarding violence, language, and drama, the game had flair. Digital actors and superb presentation made the franchise stand out against a cartoony-in-comparison Grand Theft Auto 3. A sequel was made, Black Monday, but it too suffered from many of the same issues as its predecessor. The Getaway was severely limited by its technology, but given the power of the PS3, I don’t think it’ll be an issue this time around. Release dates are as slippery as a greasy pig, but The Getaway PS3 will be an intense thriller, no doubt. Let’s hope to catch the bacon sooner rather than later.

So good news the game is not canned and a potential feature film. Bad news, no 2008 date but maybe 2009?

That would be excellent if you can.:) Sony seems to have gone very quite with the game.

If you look at the Getaway pics of London, then the GT5 Prologue pics of the London track, i see a marked simalarity - i wonder if the GT5 guy's borrowed some of the stuff from the getaway team....

How's this for an interesting thought. They'll release The Getaway when Rockstar releases the episodic content for the 360. Small interesting way of providing something for PS3 users. I wouldn't be surprised to see this at this year's e3 with a tentative release date. I'm pretty sure they haven't released anything on The Getaway because of GTAIV and some sort of relationship they have with Rockstar (same could be possibly said for why there isn't a Syphon Filter game announced yet because of their relation with Konami). Or I could just be grasping for straws, but we'll see.. One thing is for sure. The Getaway has to be near completion or at least around 65% complete. This game was shown very early and it'll be a PS3 exclusive so they can really go at it with what they could do with no limitations beyond the PS3 itself and how they can optimize code to what they want.

Didn't buy the other getaway games because the framerate was terrible when i played it round my frriends house. This one I'm really interested in it because the power of the PS3 should be able to run this game smoothly, PS2 was just too weak imo.
Cant wait for them to announce what cities are available in this game, if its just London, I wouldn't mind but just hope they have the whole London instead of just having Zone 1.

I think the biggest problem, as you said, was the PS2 hardware trying to run a photo realistic London on its weak 8mb of video ram. Now that the PS3 has 512, and with games like Gran Turismo 5 London track looking stunning, you can bet that the PS3 version will deilver amazing visuals with a good frame to boot.

Blu-ray should help fit more parts of London in.

How many zones do you guys have in London? I know zone 1 is like the downtown area. Is getaway just a small representation of the actual size of london?

6 zones in total, 1-3 being urban while 4-6 being suburbs.

Sorry ,thought you were talking about what Doc Evils said about the PS2.

My mistake.

Wait, so Getaway is a flop of a game that people are depending on for the PS3?

Sounds like another game, but I digress... Maybe they can fix the problems with the first. I'll give it a chance, like I will with Killzone 2 (Killzone 1 being another game with incredible cutscenes and less than stunning gameplay)
I loved the original Getaway. The second one was poor but the first was great to be driving around in a realistic looking London.
Totally agree, apart from some frustrating controls in the first game i loved it, 2nd game we'd be as well just forgetten about it was terrible
