Release Date:

December 14th, 2012

Runtime:

2 hr. 46 min.

Genre:

Adventure, Fantasy

About:

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first of a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The three films tell a continuous story set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Sorcerers.

Under Jackson’s direction, “The Hobbit” Trilogy has been shot in 3D 48 frames-per-second and will be released in High Frame Rate (HFR) 3D, other 3D formats, IMAX and 2D. Under Jackson’s direction, “The Hobbit” Trilogy has been shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” will be released on December 14, 2012, with the second film, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” releasing December 13, 2013, and the third film, “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” slated for July 18, 2014.

Awesome thread!
Really looking forward to this, loved the Lord of the Rings trilogy but never got around to reading it yet, so seeing the origin story will definitely be epic. I've heard a lot about this "Smaug" character so can't wait to see what the fuss about him is but I don't think he appears until the second part.

Not looking forward to having to wait three years again though :(

My inner child is giddy. Dad used to read this to me all the time when I was little.

So will you guys be seeing this in 48 FPS? There's been some mixed opinions on the technology so far. It's very divided, as some feel it's an amazing game-changer that furthers immersion and some think it's a distraction and makes the movie look cheap.

Personally, I've already bought tickets for HFR IMAX 3D. The ultimate Hobbit experience!
IMAX is always 60 right?..There's not one too close to me so I guess I'll be watching the former.

Didn't realize its playing soon, excited.
60 what? 60 FPS? Pretty much all theatrical films have been at 24 FPS until now. The Hobbit is first film to use 48 FPS.

If you want to find a theater that will have HFR, then click on the guide I posted in the OP.

Definitely HFR 3D. There wont be a better film to showcase it for a while.

48FPS will work wonders with the 3D, now about the actual film, we'l find out.

I never new what movies run that's why I asked, my mistake. Don't know where I got 60 from. Just popped in my head after remembering watching how IMAX projectors are made on that show 'How its Made'. Now I know..

I'm pretty excited. I'm not getting TOO hyped though because I KNOW that it won't be as good at the LOTR trilogy... but it will be great just to experience that universe again

Yeah, the consensus from the first 20 reviews seems to be that it's a very good movie, but not quite on the same level as LOTR.

Soo looking forward to this, watching it the day it comes out. Only thing I won't like is that usage of CGI, but its to be expected. :/

But I want to see the Smaug!! I'm re-reading the Hobbit so I can better visualize the story.

EDIT/ And you fucking rock Ixion for setting up that OP. I'll rep when I can.
I want to see the Smaug!!
You'll only get glimpses of him in the first movie apparently.

Thank you sir!
I have that weekend off. Dare I fight crowds and go? Haha
You can always buy tickets online, which is probably your only chance of seeing it opening weekend. And if you want to see it in 48 FPS, make sure you check the link in the OP, so you can find nearby theaters that will use the feature.
