as long as nintendo is still making money they will never stop. and as long as Sony is around Microsoft will continue to try and destroy them and unless sony sells of its massive development teams (third largest development company i believe) they will continue to make consoles.
next gen might not be as soon as people think and the systems might not be anything like we expect them to be but there will be a next gen and all three major players will be there to battle it out. these companies are going nowhere anytime soon.
i also can not see how it will be 2015 before sony see's a profit from this gen i think they are getting close to pulling in a profit. not in 6 years but this year or next.
also next gen will probably be the cheapest generation for Sony to R&D a new console and finance parts esp if they just us an updated Cell processor i am sure they will basically keep the system very much the same as the PS3 just more power so they can just update there online structure to implement everything to work on the next system instead or starting from the bottom up.. this gen was expensive for sony with a whole lot of firsts for them that cost a lot in development and research.
next gen will be just upgrades.
i completely agree with their sentiments here, and am quite frankly amazed that so many people here think they are so full of ****.

console gaming as we know it is running on borrowed time. the business model simply doesnt make sense anymore and hasnt for some time.

WHO is making money on console gaming right now (besides nintendo)? Sony isnt, MS isnt. they both sunk ~5 BILLION into the 360/PS3, and are now making a couple million back a quarter. Devs are closing up shop and/or merging left and right because dev cost is exponentially spiraling upwards, increased piracy and used game sales, and being forced to develop on drastically different, proprietary hardware. game prices are going up. who is making money?

i have been saying it for a long time, but IF there is a 720/PS4, they will be the LAST of the traditional "console generations."

pretty soon the way we game is going to be re-designed from the foundation. we dont know what exactly is going to end up happening, it might even be something like onlive (right now im thinking that it probly WILL be something like this). but one thing is for SURE: there will be no PS5/xbox4 in the form of consoles like we think of them now.
I completely agree...the bottom line is no one is making money. When it comes to predictions, no one is 100% right all the time. Hell the weatherman can't even predict tomorrow's weather correctly. I don't understand people bashing Pachter.....he's doing his job and giving his opinion based on the current landscape of console gaming. I'm quite certain he is way more informed on the subject than anyone posting in here.

I don't know if there will be another console or not, I'm not really too concerned about it right now. The one I have suits me just fine.

I sure missed that days when games where just games. The business has grown so that we have guys like this getting paid to give a dumb opinion. I remember one time when we barely had reviews. You just brought the game and if it suck then it suck. Now that it's become a family form of entertainment. Everybody wanting a piece of the pie and I believe hardcore gamers are getting wash over. Like Pachter thinking that the best thing will be played on the Wii. Gaming started as a geeky thing done on PC. Now that it's gone all commercial. I just don't think gaming been the same since. It helped and hurt gaming both at the same time.

most don't really see the big picture... the PS3 has become a system that does not need to be replaced... when the other two release their new systems for oodles of dough, Sony will only need to release components for $60-$100 to upgrade to a new console... and with that, sony will flourish beyond speculation because of how much cheaper it will be to stay with PS3 (or PS4 if they call it that after the upgrade) instead of buying a new Microsoft or Xbox console...

there is simply no way that sony could get away with that and then designing games that dont work on the first 40 million consoles. how would joe public respond to that? goes out to the store to get uncharted 3, pops it in, then finds out he cant play it?

no way, the hardware in all the consoles will stay the exact same (barring HDD) until whatever comes next, comes next.

the point is if the processing is removed from the client end then the client never needs to be upgraded.

thus if it is possible to have games run without lag on a low end pc/mac/ps3/xbox because all they need to do is strema the video and provied input then consoles are dead.

I'd be glad of it because I play games and the value added is in the artistic content not the chips in my house.

I'm not at all convinced. I think there's plenty of reason to continue updating consoles.

You might as well argue that we've seen the last generation of cell phones, because they're powerful enough.

What I do think we've seen the end of is the "razor/blades" model of console development.
