1.5 million is pretty good, but it seems they needed more.

Tomb Raider sales tank, Eidos shares plummet

Underworld's 1.5 million sold worldwide fail to meet publisher's expectations; stock price drops 30 percent in response.

Eidos' troubles continued today, as the publisher formerly known as SCi announced that sales of its latest game, Tomb Raider: Underworld have failed to meet its forecasts, selling 1.5 million copies worldwide.

Eidos said difficulties in the North American market were to blame, with "retailers restricting inventory levels and triple-A products being price discounted above expectation." Due to the drop in demand, and worries of ongoing price discounting in the US, Eidos has lowered its full year revenue forecast by £20 million ($30.39 million).

The news caused shares in the company to plunge 5.25p ($.08 ) to 12p ($.18 ) in early trade this morning. Shares in the group skyrocketed at the tail end of 2005 reaching highs of 500p ($7.59) but have been in steady decline since; the company has lost 74 percent of its value in the past year.

The games industry, generally expected to weather the recession better than many sectors, has seen a multitude of job losses and bailouts, despite strong sales at retail. EA announced the layoffs of more than 500 staff back in October of last year (later doubling that figure), while Midway is still trying to settle its $150 million debt. More diversified companies such as Sony and Microsoft have also felt the pinch, embarking on vast restructuring plans, though the effect of these changes on these firms' gaming businesses is not yet clear.

Despite the gloom, Eidos remained positive about 2009 with the launch of forthcoming game Batman: Arkham Asylum stating "We are working closely with DC Comics and Warner Bros. and through our strategic partnership we are benefitting from cross-promotional opportunities including the first video trailer for Batman: Arkham Asylum featured on all DVDs of the movie The Dark Knight this Christmas."

1.5 million is tanking these days? Wow..

The fact that there was no demo, no Trophy support and there will be no DLC for the PS3 version kind of hinders support there though in my opinion...

I'll pick it up eventually - just haven't gotten around to it yet in the myriad of game releases lately 8)

I would have considered it a little more but their lack of support (trophies, DLC, demo) kinda killed it for me!

Maybe they can learn from this....

And they think Batman is going to sell enough to make profit? Who are they kidding?

No way I was buying this for full price with no trophies, demo or chance of DLC. I wonder if these MS exclusives are working out for these companies.

Well they did put it out on pretty much every platform there is, so 1.5 million was probably well below what they expected

How many times can you release the same game? I think this game was even a montage of the first 3 if I'm correct. Or maybe it was just a big flashback or something IDK.

Another (what started as good series) beat to death for the $$

TR:U was ok but just not good enough when coming from uncharted with it's great platforming and action... Uncharted have taken the adventure/action title for me from TR.

hehehe that's funny that they suggest this was a problem for Tomb Raider.

Maybe if they didn't release the PS3 version without trophies and the Wii version with such unplayable bugs they would have sold more.

Or at least market it better, although in all fairness my location did sell a lot of it and it was hard to get back in stock. So it's safe to say our warehouse wasn't doing it bestest at getting games in.

Wasn't really interested in this game with or without trophies or dlc. They need to come out with a next gen soul reaver.

I know. Try making a good game and it might actually sell. Gamers do tend to prefer good games.

Since the game is on 4 (i think) platforms, they need to see more than that to regain costs for 4 platform version costs.

Maybe they should stop making crappy milked games with cruddy support for 'specific' versions and be a decent publisher.. But this is Eidos.

1.5 million seems average, games sell well some dont, i think the TR series is going on for to long it needs to stop & take a break. but uncharted was a good game so TR has a rival now no wonder some usesr choose uncharted over TR or have both. if it wasnt for uncharted TR could of made more sales.

This may be sacriledge on these forums, but I am waiting until the end of the month to get it for ps2 $29.99. Form the graphical glitches and few bugs I have read about/plus no trophies. There is no way I would spend $60.00 dollars for this game.

I guess Eidos have reaped what they've sown.

Prior to the games release they asked reviewers to withold reviews until after the opening weekend if the score was less than an 80. I'm sorry, but if you're a developer and you think you're going to get lower than an 80; you know your product is poor.

TR:U wasn't the game it should have been. Whilst I'm a Tomb Raider fan, I don't think the game they built should have done well. It was poor in comparison to Legend and Anniversary.

Money is better spent replaying your original copy or picking up an old PS1 copy.

The original was an absolute masterpiece of pacing and camera work. The amazing quiet punctuated by sudden action and violence. And the way they so successfully implemented the original Prince of Persia type jumping system into a 3D world.

Sad to see the franchise driven into the ground by mismanagement.

Never been a fan of the series, but it seems like the same game every time. For a game that might be considered average, 1.5 million sounds pretty good. I guess they were really needing a lot more to sell.
