SCEA PR manager Ryan Bowlin has given some new information about the ammount of ps3 developer kits that have been shipped to developers:

SCEA PR manager Ryan Bowling informed Next-Gen, "Mark DeLoura, SCEA’s manager of developer relations, has left the company; J. Patton will continue to oversee the company's developer relations team."

He noted that top publishers and developers are still strongly tied with SCEA. "The best and brightest development teams are hard at work creating familiar franchises and original IP for the PS3 including – EA, Konami, Sega, Rockstar, Activison and our own internal studios just to name a few," Bowling stated.

He also offered the latest PS3 dev kit shipment figures, in an effort to exhibit Sony's commitment to developers. "To date we have shipped more than 10,000 development systems to 208 companies in 11 countries, the largest number ever for a PlayStation platform."
More than 10.000 developers kits  .... IMPRESSIVE :D

... a company consists of more than one employee. ubisoft alone has has thousands and thousands of employees. so... with 10,000+ kits sent out, i'm sure each company got enough to get goin' on their kick ass titles 8)

TGS is FINALLY going to turn things around.

I'm hoping for some big surprises and major updates on titles we've already seen.

Good to hear. But I thought developers were running away from the PS3 :snigger ?
Some of them may run, but there are a lot left.

Your impression is old. Over time, of course situations change. And it probably means that the most number of dev kits are in developer hands before the launch of the console. Obviously in the PS1 days developers didn't have complete faith in Sony's newcomer. In the PS2 days there was the scare about being hard to develop for with little power to show for it, and being out after Dreamcast.

Any developers that were late in hopping the boat of where the sales were of the last two generations hopefully are not stupid enough to and leave the PS3 alone just because of it's price - making a mistake for the third time.

This is a way to debunk that developers are strying away from the PS3, I say it is a good move by Sony, because the press was killing them with story after story of developers jumping ship. So imo I think this is good press, and will keep everyone on the fences.

When I've saw a movie that went behind the scenes of Killzone, every single person working on the game had a PS2 for him. And if you count the beta testers with that... Well, they need them. And the more PS3's that Sony will be giving to developers, how more popular they will get by them.

While this does sound good it is only because Ps2 had such a poor roll out of kits. There where stories of single Ps2 kits being split between 10-15 people when typically it is about 2 or 3 people, the roll out was horrible back then.

I'm just glad it's not a repeat of last time. The place where I am working has finally got a solid date on when we receive the final kits so things are looking up at the moment.

10,000 Dev kits to 208 companies  TGS will be one heck of a show I tells yah.
I thought TGS is a place for only most Japanese games, doesn't make sense if a game from other countries appear at TGS.

But don't forget that most of the PS3's AAA titles are made by japanese dev so I expect and higher percentage of those dev kits are shipped to japanese developers.

TGS is just a Japanese game show. Its pretty much the Japanese E3. Not only Japanese games are shown there lol, pretty much all games are but the Japanese titles take center stage more often then not. Games that will appeal more to the Japanese gamer.

Probably see some new titles announced and showcased for the PS3 as well as alot more on those games everyone is interested in. Virtua Fighter 5, Ridge Racer 7, Final Fantasy XIII and vs. XIII, stuff like that.

If Sony wants to put a nail in the competitions coffin, just have Team Ico showcase their latest PS3 project and all will be over with lol.

Its a mixture of the older devkits and the newer devkits. No way they have sent out 10,000 development kits since June 1st. Unless their production is just so high these days with all their factories that they are far beyond anyone else in the gaming industry. I doubt many companies are without the RSX and FlexIO interface though. Those DevKits have been sent out since May 1st.

1 thing people seem to forget when judging the look of PS3 games at the moment. No game has more then 2 months development time on the actual Playstation 3 hardware. Before May 1st developers didn't have the GPU to work with, didn't have the overall bandwidth provided by FlexIO and things of that nature. So no game is even close to pushing the system because up until this point no game has really been designed to push the REAL system lol.

i think why some devs ran away from the ps3 because of lack of dev kits , and they wanted to work and they were getting tired of waiting for too long.
Those that are patient will have more fun.

I don't think it really matters what the ratio of old to new is. It seems likely that each of the 208 companies have multiple versions of the dev kits. A couple V1's....few V2's, and a final or two. You never know.

I doubt that the major players, ie: EA, SE, Valve, Insomniac, Incognito, etc. etc. have anything less than finals right now. There is no way they would let them slip through the cracks. I'm sure Sony decides who get's which kits first, so it seems common sense that they ship them to the "more important" developers first.

They need to ship some tampons along with some of those kits though. EA, Webzen, and id software come to mind.....

Is that final dev kits?

Or does it mean 3000 V1 dev kits, 3000 V2 kits etc
Hmm, that's a really good question, and one that I must answer with: I don't know.
Without the comment of "Final Dev Kits" this is to be assumed.

Basically, they are probably somewhere around 2,000 - 4,000 final dev kits on the market.

Some of the developers I talk with still say they only have around 2 or 3 dev kits, maybe one of which is a final dev kit.

One of the bigger questions the developers have isn't when they are going to get final hardware dev kits, but when they are going to get the software to back them up.

Also of note, there are over 40,000 Xbox360 dev kits out there world wide. FINAL dev kits with full software development environements that MS provides updates for on a monthly basis.
