What's the internet situation in your part of the world?

I was recently watching this video from Jeff Geerling (having come from his pi router video) and i had to collect my jaw up off the floor when i saw how much the guy pays for his internet connection (150 USD!!) and what options he even had available to him. More over, the speeds were kinda terrible.
Down our end of the world, for that money, you can get a symmetric 4Gigabit connection (4 in/4 out), and still have change...

When i was growing up, i always thought the US lead the pack for this stuff, but god damn if some people aren't getting bent over backwards.

Where we are, our plan is a smidgen over 80 USD for an asymmetric 1Gigabit plan (our ISP uses PPPoE so we get 'slower' speeds), which includes a few extra's like a "phone line" etc.. The base cost of our plan would be a little over 55 USD.

Reading the comments in the video, it seems a lot of places also have some pretty decent internet for pretty decent prices, so i was curious what the situation is with the people over here. For anyone in the US, is it that dire or wut?

Well, it's not quite as cheap here in Sweden as it seems to be for you. I pay about $50/month (incl. tax) for a 100/100 (fibre) connection with no data limitations or anything like that, it might be possible to get it cheaper from another provider, I haven't cheched lately. I can get up to 1000/1000 with my provider for $105/month (incl. tax). I have quite a few options to choose from when it comes to service providers. And I live in a small city/town with only about 10 000-15 000 people, it is probably even better and more options in the bigger cities.

I pay $80/month and get 400mbps download and 150mbps upload speed through Comcast. It doesn’t always hit those top speeds, but I also don’t have it directly connected via Ethernet.

It works fine for my wife and I. We generally can both be playing online at the same time without any lag. May need to upgrade when she starts streaming though.

lol we don't have those options here, paying 10 usd for 35 mbps, it is enough for me tho, as I used to live with this standards. Most expensive one here is 17 usd for 120 mbps. Don't wanna talk upload speeds you won't believe it they are aweful.

I'm with 55mbps here its a 50 fiber but it locks at 55.Its fast enough for everything i do....Tried an 100 fiber one but it was a waste of money,they do offer a 200 one too.We pay around 30 per month for phone and internet.

The reason we went with the gigabit plan was because the two 'normal' residential plans every isp offers here are just 100/20, and 950/500 (our isp advertises 900/400 for above reason). I wasn't too warm to the 20Mb upload so the gigabit plan was it. Looking at the amount of traffic we pass, even under heavy use, we'd have been fine with 100/100 and i was kinda hoping we could do 200/200 when we were discussing pricing. 100/100 for 50 usd(?) seems pretty sweet! for that money we'd only get 20Mb uploads.

$10 for 35Mb seems like a steal imho. Our ISP's kept their pricing scheme when they switched over, so we would have been paying the same now years ago (~80USD) for our dsl lines. Saying that, if you saturate your upload link the network can face all sorts of issues. Is it really terrible?

Yup. It looks nice on paper, but that's basically all. As i said above, a 200/200 would have been more than enough for us. We barely make use of our link, but the upload does come in handy when we need it since we have a vpn set up that basically gets up back into our network - Our plex server doesn't even need port forwarding rules set up.

There are residential plans here for symmetric 2, 4, and 8 Gbit... Those are kinda pricey tho. What are these people pushing in and out of their houses? sheesh.

Oh, I must have misunderstood what you meant, I thought your pricing was better than mine. Mine also includes a (crappy) Router that does the job, but it's not a very good Router. I have the option to use my own Router if I want to, but for now the one that comes with the service works. Yeah, I don't feel like I need a faster connection than I have now, it's definitely enough for me at the moment. 20 upload feels a bit low, so I understand why you went with the faster option. Yeah, it's around US$ 50 (439 SEK, incl. tax) for my 100/100 connection.
