The husband of a woman "torn to bits" by eight pig dogs in the Waikato said he felt he had encountered a scene from a horror film.

Mother-of-two Margit Christensen, 36, was set upon as she jogged along a rural road in Arapuni, 37km east of Te Awamutu, about 1pm yesterday.

Mrs Christensen, from Putaruru, endured a sustained attack that lasted about 15 minutes, and suffered numerous bites to much of her body.

Her friend, Christina Eigner, who had just arrived in the country on holiday from Germany a week ago, was unicycling ahead when she heard Mrs Christensen screaming as three dogs attacked her.

Five other dogs soon joined the melee, she told a press conference today.

Ms Eigner ran to a nearby house to raise the alarm.

The dog's owner was able to call the dogs off when she realised an attack was happening.

Ms Eigner said after the attack Mrs Christensen was only worried about who would be picking up her daughters, aged eight and 10, from school.

"I was just happy she was alive," she said.

That's horrible at least she's alive. But I did laugh at unicycling....is that a common thing for germans to do?!

I'm sorry, I can't take this article seriously. Everytime I read "unicycling" I just imagine a crazy-looking clown... and the eight pig dogs don't help, if I'm honest.
Yeah I mean what the hell is a pig-dog, anyway?
Dogs trained for the assistance in hunting wild boars apparently.

More info:

Yesterday at lunchtime, a 36-year-old Waikato dairy farmer and mother of two was attacked by a pack of pig dogs as she went on her daily run.

Margit Christensen, “Maggie”, was accompanied by her young German friend Christina Eigner, a world ranked unicyclist who had arrived in New Zealand last week for a working holiday on the Christensen's farm.

Christina was on her unicycle riding ahead, as they made their way along Hildreth Road, about 15km west of Putaruru.

All of sudden Maggie was attacked by a pack of pig dogs, she was badly injured and her survival seems almost miraculous.
Makes more sense why her friend was on a unicycle.

It's got the head of a dog, the bright-pink body of a pig but with a little fur, dog-like legs, and a short curly pig-tail. Oh and it likes to roll around in mud.

yeah same here, the "torn to bits" implies that she was mutilated, and had limbs ripped off. or am I just over exaggerating ?

but lo @ unicycle.

The moment I read the bold part, I couldnt stop laughing. Just mentioning the unicyclying makes it hard to take seriously. Poor woman though :(

The dogs were just doing what they have been trained to do, you can't blame them for the attack. The blame for this attack lies in the hands of the owner who did not take the appropriate measures to make sure her dogs posed no threat to the community.

If you have ever seen pig-dogs in action you would realise just how lucky the victim is to be alive.

On a seperate note: Has anyone here ever tried unicycling? Work mate had a unicycle that I tried to ride a few times, it is really hard to get the hang of. Fell off and landed pretty badly and bruised my tail bone, hurt to sit down for a week or so. Haven't been game enough to try again since.

I thought at first the pig-dogs were on unicycles, you know, 'cause that's how they tend to get around.

Here's one attacking with knives:

One of the worst pictures to put in a children's safety book. Don't run with scissors, don't unicycle with knives...as a pig :snicker
