The husband of a woman "torn to bits" by eight pig dogs in the Waikato said he felt he had encountered a scene from a horror film.
Mother-of-two Margit Christensen, 36, was set upon as she jogged along a rural road in Arapuni, 37km east of Te Awamutu, about 1pm yesterday.
Mrs Christensen, from Putaruru, endured a sustained attack that lasted about 15 minutes, and suffered numerous bites to much of her body.
Her friend, Christina Eigner, who had just arrived in the country on holiday from Germany a week ago, was unicycling ahead when she heard Mrs Christensen screaming as three dogs attacked her.
Five other dogs soon joined the melee, she told a press conference today.
Ms Eigner ran to a nearby house to raise the alarm.
The dog's owner was able to call the dogs off when she realised an attack was happening.
Ms Eigner said after the attack Mrs Christensen was only worried about who would be picking up her daughters, aged eight and 10, from school.
"I was just happy she was alive," she said.
