Shinji Mikami Hits Out At CERO As Shadows Of The Damned Remaster Is Censored In Japan

Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami has hit out at Japanese ratings board CERO after it was revealed that Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered has been censored on consoles in Japan.

Goichi Soda revealed during an interview with GameSpark that, like the original 2011 release, Shadows of the Damned has been cut in Japan to appease CERO. In the same interview, Mikmai-san, who collaborated with Suda51 on Shadows of the Damned, had the following to say about the ratings process:

I think it’s a strange situation that there are people who want to play edgy games, and there are those who don’t play games who try to prevent their enjoyment by restricting those works with regulations.

Meanwhile, Suda51 added:

If regional restictions are imposed, we have no choice but to adhere to them, but I always wonder what the player thinks about it. For example, if a lot of people buy the PC version on Steam because they want to play it without restrictions, it would be a bit sad, considering it’s available on a variety of platforms. It makes me wonder who the restrictions are aimed at – at the very least, I don’t think they’re aimed at the customers who play the game.

Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered is pencilled in for release on October 31, 2024 for PS5, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.

Speaking of Mikami-san, the former Capcom developer touched base on a potential Dino Crisis revival during a separate interview last week, suggesting that there’s not much room for the series with Monster Hunter about.
