If you’re someone who bought The Last Of Us Part II digitally on PS4, then with the coming The Last Of Us Part II Remastered on PS5, you just need to pay the $10 upgrade for this new version.

You might’ve already known that, but more than a few players didn’t, or seemingly got so giddy about a game they love coming to PS5, they pre-ordered it for full price in their excitement.

If that was you, then don’t worry, you haven’t missed out on the deal, because Sony isn’t going to let you. Shared by mrpyo1 on Twitter, Sony is refunding players who pre-ordered The Last Of Us Part II Remastered at full price, who could’ve gotten the $10 upgrade instead.

“Thank you for your pre-order of The Last Of Us Part II Remastered from the PlayStation Store,” a message from PlayStation begins to players in this predicament.

“As owner of the PS4 digital version of The Last Of Us Part II, a digital upgrade to the PS5 digital version will be available at a deeply discounted price on launch day 19/1/24.

We don’t want you to lose out on that opportunity, so as a gesture of good will, we have refunded your purchase for the pre-order of the PS5 version of The Last Of Us Part II Remastered so that you may purchase the digital upgrade on launch day.

Rest assured that by purchasing the digital upgrade, you will also receive any pre-order bonuses included in your digital pre-order.”

This is great to see, though at the same time it’s a bare minimum effort since you can imagine one or two consumers would’ve taken issue with Sony letting them commit such a mistake in the first place.

It’s good that Sony is refunding players, but it’s difficult to pretend it is “a gesture of good will” rather than something Sony would’ve been obligated to do anyways, after already promising the $10 upgrade path.

If anything, this speaks more to how Sony needs to be better when rolling out systems onto the PlayStation Store to avoid something like this even happening.

For example, when this writer checks out the PlayStation Store page for The Last Of Us Part II Remastered on their PS5 console, the ‘buy’ button has been removed entirely.

Instead it’ll show me a message explaining “You already own the following products, which conflict with the product you’re trying to buy: The Last Of Us Part II.”

The PlayStation Store clearly has safeguards to stop these pre-order issues from ever happening, so hopefully they’re better at it in the future.
