According to a report on Digitimes.com, the upcoming Pioneer 400GB Blu-ray discs will be compatible will all current Blu-ray players, including the PlayStation 3.
"The technology of the super multi-layer read-only disc is based on Blu-ray Disc with a breakthrough in material of reflective layers. The specifications of the pick-up head (PUH) of the disc is the same as those for the PUH of blank BD discs, and therefore the Pioneer discs can be read on BD players." - Pioneer High Fidelity Taiwan.
Apparently, Pioneer plans to have read-only 400GB Blu-ray discs on the market by 2010, with rewritable discs in 2010-2012 and 1TB (1,000GB) disc in 2013.
Stay tuned for more information as it breaks.

I thought the limit was 200gig. 1tb? That's insane. Who needs streaming when you have discs of this capacity?

Blu Ray. The whole reason this little "console war" exists!!
Now, the possiblities are pretty endless!!! Well... For us with Blu Ray players that is, ie. PS3 owners :DAnd if EggBox wants to compete any further? They'll need to make a move into Blu Ray, which means payin Sony an obscene amount of money, and even then, Sony may deny it, or give them restrictions!! LAWLZORZ.

@Lozt_again!!! You mean, now there will be no need for compression whatsoever. Streaming HD content is one of the best features the PS3 has. I need to really get my but through college as I have some real amazing ideas for some games.

Maybe Sega can now finally release a Sonic compliation with Sonic CD on it. Either that or the entire Mega Drive catalogue.

OMG that is too much this can make a video game earth anyway that would have to be like in five or more layers because th 200GB that they was trying to make was in quad(4) layers so now 400 that have to about 5-8 layers and doesnt require a faster disk speed which mean the BD will have to be replaced in the PS3 because its only 2x

theres no way playstation 3 will handle th 400 gb properly. They can hardly handle 50gb blue ray disc due to such a slow speed (2x) on the drive. Thats why they gotta have huge installs.

My plans for a 1TB disc would just be buying one or two re-writable ones and backing up my entire PC HDD on them... Screw external hard drives...

LOL The possibilities are flying through my head! Back-ups of my entire PC hard-drive, ENORMOUS games, high-def movie/television/video game series packed into one-disc collections,...Sure it's another long wait, but it's a far leap from the current discs we use. PS3 is the future, Xbox #3 ain't gonna get Blu-Ray so MS can drop it already.

Damn, just imagine an RPG made on that disc, would probably last for 100000000000000000 hours, then again,it'd probably take longer than Duke Nukem Forever,in development.
