Sales of Sony Corp’s PlayStation 3 have surged in both the North American and Japanese markets following the release of the firm’s new 40GB console, which retails for a substantially lower price point compared to earlier models.

In its native Japan, the new SKU sold through more than 65,000 units during its first week; more than double the amount of weekly sales for its 60GB predecessor. This was further encouraged by the release of the PS3-exclusive Dynasty Warriors 6, which sold 180,000 units.

Nomura Securities analyst, Eiichi Katayama, commented: Although Sony's game business has not been performing strongly, the first indications of the new lower-priced model's sales look likely to alleviate overly negative impressions of the business.”

"It's the breakthrough we've been anticipating," added Sony Corp’s Howard Stringer. "We've been holding our breath." This is a rare occasion where the one-week sales of the PS3 have surpassed Nintendo's tiny behemoth, the Wii. "Obviously, we've taken so much heat over the year on PS3 ... Finally, the turning point has been passed.”

The auspicious trend also looks set to continue in North America, where the new 40GB model is continuing to perform on an impressive basis.

    According to vgchartz last weeks hardware sales are: Wii - 310,000 - x360 - 230,000 - PS3 - 200,000. But due to claims of them being biased by both sony and ms gamers its hard to tell if they're accurate. But nonetheless they may indicate that sales rates are getting closer between the three.

    Who cares about how many ps3’s were sold i have got a ps3 an xbox360 and a wii i like these consoles for there individuality and the GAMES nothing else matters, GAMES are for GAMERS and GAME sales are for twisted FANBOYS! Just which this site would concentrate more on games than hardware sales who cares.

    I care personally, why?  Cause I like to see progression.  I love to play games, and I love to watch movies, but I also like to watch the directions each company is taking.  Its fun to watch business trends, find out what works, and what doesn't.  See if companies learn from their mistakes.  Plus, I don't have a 24/7 opportunity to play games and so when I get some down time at work, its nice to have something to read.

    @xBSGeorge,

    Man there's no way I could have said it better myself- Business holds my interest and it's cool to read the directions your favorite company is going, but you just summed it up.

    DW6 only released in Japan thus far, and it is not a PS3 Exclusive, it just sells a heck of alot more on PS than 360 over there.

    I never had any doubt the PS3 would be successful in Japan because I always knew the day FFXIII came out over there, every Japanese gamer would want it.

    Now comes the question as to how long they can keep this momentum going to surpass the wii next year, if not the next.

    Yes but look at the sales in N.America, but who cares just enjoy the games you souped up on nothing fanboys, this site didn't show you last weeks sales in japan did they WHY because the xb360 sold alot more hardware in japan than sony but who cares it's about the GAMES.

    Looks like Howard Stringer still has a lot to learn about the game console industry. None the less this is good news and hopefully this trend will continue the next six weeks.

    I think its just an initial grab for a cheap PS3 atm, can't see the game sales jumping 65,000 can anyone ?

    Sony needs to offer PS1+2 compatibility upgrade online for all those crippled units !
