Sony's new 40GB PlayStation 3 sold out in advanced orders at retailer Amazon.com on Tuesday.

The new 40GB model, which includes a Blu-ray disc drive, built-in Wi-Fi, a wireless controller, and a copy of Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray disc, will sell for $399 on November 2nd. In addition, the latest version lacks backwards compatibility with PS2 games, which was found in previous models including the 20GB, 60GB, and the limited compatibility in the 80GB.

Customers can receive an e-mail alert when the product returns to availability.

Sony last week announced the 40GB SKU in addition to a price cut of the 80GB by $100 to $499. In July it cut the price of the 60GB SKU to $499, where it will remain until all the stock is sold out.

The new retail strategy will likely spike sales of the hardware and help Sony overall this Holiday season.

I'm not sure how they expect to sell out of 60GB sku when it's no cheaper than the 80gb. Regardless, when a big retailer like amazon sells out of a sku, it's gotta be a good thing. I really hope people in the media and some in the industry stop poo-pooing the system.
    GO SONY GO!!!

well this is great news, the new model with a lower price plus the range of games over the next few months has really caught peoples attention, i just wish people would stop comparing the ps3 now to the xbox 360 now, they are both at different stages in their life cycle,  and the games are far ahead of where 360 was at the same time.i never thought b/c was an issue cause the people that wanted that went for the higher price sku,  just like i did when i brought the system at the launch in march., the 40gb is a attractive price point , includes a blu-ray player, wifi, free online gaming, limited internet access, and the range of games are now getting to a point where we are not hoping for a great game maybe once a month we are getting multiple great games each month, on my want list is pes2008, ratchet and clank, haze, assassins creed, kane and lynch, call of duty 4, pain, guitar hero 3,, and already we know early next year we get metal gear solid 4, killzone 2, gta 4,home, little big planet, gran turismo 5 and that is just the last quarter of the current year, we have yet to see what is planned for this time next year except fallout 3 .exciting times are ahead.,so all the ps3 naysayers out there, you should keep the faith , sony has always delivered a quality console, with  a good and diverse range of games, not every one is into fps, or driving games, so spread the gospel and show your friends and family what they are missing,l just show them ratchet and clank, and watch their open mouths gawp in amazment about how beautiful and vivid a game can look.

    Insane!

See, those who already have a ps2 don't have b*tch 'bout BC compatability and see the 40GB version as a lovely powerful HDMI capable ps3.

Heck the fact that it's white makes me want to get one too(LOVE the black version to death too).

Good news.  I haven't tried to play too many PS2 games in my PS3 anyways, I have 2 other PS2's and plenty of inputs and/or tv's in the house.  This could be a remarkable holiday season for Sony if these sales aren't just spikes.

Lots of angry customers realise it doesnt have BC after they have paid their money....

They need to put a warning on the packaging otherwise customers should be entitled to a refund.

Great news for Sony.  Hopefully they can continue this momentum.  I am probably going to go get another so I can have a second in the gameroom so I can play my kid (hate split screen).  I wouldn't count MS down yet...  their console is cheaper to manufacture and we all know they never gave a price reduction for the longest time just because there was no competition.  This console war is going to get ugly.

I agree with the Cleaner, There are people out there who;ve been convinced even today that the 80gb dosent have any BC when it still does so there's definatly going to be some people who are ill informed in the other direction too. My biggest hope is that in a year or two when they've finally stopped trying to sell the PS2 hardware that they'll return BC to even the 40gb so that the system can have all the features it. was meant to have for a price that still proves its a better value than the 36*/

@The Cleaner...I'm sorry, why do you post comments at PSU?

The only thing I've seen you do is complain about the PS3 and be negative about everything. Get over it. If you don't like your PS3, take it back, there are plenty of people who'd like a used one.

@14 Why should customers be titled to a refund? They're already getting a $200 refund. If they wanted BC they should have paid $600 for the original 60GB like me. If you don't pay the price for something when you want it, it's no fault but your own. This is great news for Sony.

I have a PS2 and PS3, and I don't care about backwards-compatibility at all, because PS2 games look much better (imho) on SDTV than on a 1080p LCD monitor. (I like the natural blurring of TVs). Maybe I should have waited for the 40GB version... but nah the 4 USB, card-readers and larger HDD are worth it, since I need them.

I bought the 60 GiG Model due to the fact it is more compatible for Ps2 games since it has the 2 chips instead of the 80 GiG model plus i upgraded the hard drive to a 160 Gig special note i stripped the screws lol they are way to soft i even let it cool down and still stripped them but other then that the ps3 is humming away.

I dont know why everybody have been doubting Sony and their PS3 for so long, it was never going to fail, and it never will, its too good. Chill people chill and stop moaning about delays on games etc, we own a cutting edge piece of hardware here that needs to be explored by developers. Sony could have chosen to go down the bog standard easy dev route and wack a cut down PC in a box (360) with no new technology. plus stop whining on about the BC issue, cos its NOT an issue, i have a huge PS2 library and have used my BC functionality twice, plus surely if you have PS2 games you have a PS2????? So use it! jeeess people want everything for nothing.

No I am only negative about three things:

    (1) Stupidity that leads to lack of quality games

    (2) Stupid preoccupation with Bluray and not on quality games

    (3) Stupidity of removing BC so 120 million people cant play games.

Basicly anything stupid that gets in the way of games is bad. Anything clever that brings about more games is good.
