60GB PS3 to be phased out in Europe

Sony Computer Entertainment has revealed that the 60GB PlayStation 3 will be phased out in European territories once stock at retail has been depleted.

The announcement comes following Friday’s news of a new 40GB entry model, where the firm also confirmed a price cut for the 60GB model to GBP 349.

However, the company has since revealed it plans to offer consumers only the 40GB model as soon as the 60GB Starter Pack has sold out.

"The 60GB Starter pack will remain on sale until stocks run out (a number of months, depending on territory)," commented Nick Sharples, Director of Corporate Communications for SCEE.

"Thereafter, the 40GB model will be the only SKU in the SCEE region”, he added.

These plans echo similar efforts employed by Sony in North America, where the company recently discontinued the 60GB PS3 in the region following the arrival of a new 80GB model in August.

Stay tuned for more developments on Sony’s regional plans for PS3 as they break.

Crap, what will happen to my 60GB PS3 with software BC if it ever breaks down and needs to be replaced under warranty?

Perhaps an effort to get rid of the numerous models the console has? Hah! Just getting rid of the 60GB version I suppose.

@Stef Nighthawk: I'm sure Sony have that covered - they can't introduce models then phase them out without carefully weighing such issues. That console's very expesive remember?

Maybe Sony may introduce a dedicated PS3 Portable External HDD in the future?!?!  With atleast 200gigs and small in size? Yeah, so then we can play our downloads anywhere with carrying a very fragile PS3 with us! :)

So what about those who want to play ps2 games? To limit the whole of Europe to only ps3 games, what a blunder.

i must admit that I dont like the sound of this new kit. Fewer USB, no backwards compatibility and no media card readers. but wait when i think about it, i have seldom used more than two USB ports, 1 for my wireless keyboard and 1 for the sixaxis charge lead, have rarely used the media card reader and have only used the backwards compatibility to play the odd PS2 game as for months we have been short on PS3 games but that is soon to change. Still these features are a NICE TO HAVE. i would like to see Europe have the choice of a top daddy 160GB SKU and a budget 40GB SKU and thats it.

@richkaos, 1 USB for my keyboard, 1 USB for my mouse, 1 USB for the PSEye and 1 USB to recharge the controller.  hmmm, seems I do need those 4 USB ports on my PS3.

To Stef Nighthawk...go buy a freakin wireless keyboard and mouse you twit. You'll have the extra couple hundred bucks from buying the cheaper ps3.

    • 8:25am BST - October 8th, 2007

@lithgow, no thanks, a FREAKIN USB hub is cheaper than a wireless Keyboard/mouse combo.  But as to my point in my post richkaos will still need an extra USB port if he wants to buy and use the PSEye.

    >> Maybe Sony may introduce a dedicated PS3 Portable External HDD in the future

You can use any 2.5" SATA HDD. Months ago, many people got their PS3s to have 650GB HDD.  But you can't just take-out the HDD and play it on another PS3, because all data is encrypted to your PS3. You can only format that HDD on another PS3.

Well, people clamored and complained about the price.... and the justification of the expensive consoles. Not only was it said but the PS3 has been selling pretty slowly. So, they heard people and acted on it. I don't feel bad for the people who didn't get the PS3, people were expecting to purchase the same system after a long period of time for a lower price. Thats fine and dandy but sony shouldn't be expected to take the losses for that long. Cut some stuff out and offer the system cheaper. People complaining about compnents in the system can be quit now because they offer everyhting that makes the PS3 functional and eleminated alot of uneccesary stuff.

Yamato.....the highest capacity 2.5" SATA drive you can get right now is 250GB, not 650! I am surprised Sony seems to be planning on removing even the CHOICE to have backwards compatibility. I understand only wanting one model and all that, but WOW! Why not just make very few BC models and the majority the 40GB so people at least have the choice of spending extra money to be able to play their old games as well? I haven't used my ability to do so too much but I have used it SOME and I was glad of it! Unless they introduce some kind of completely-in-software emulation to allow at least decent BC with this model, I think limiting the choices down to only the 40GB is not the best thing for Sony customers. Sure, most people will play mostly the new games, but we all have our "old favorites" that we want to pop in once in a while! Yikes!

I feel sorry for everyone at this point. What his means in short is that Sony will no longer support BC on any console in any region. They will phase out the 80 GB version next with a no BC version.

Staticneuron you are the only one on here that has any brains at all.  I would give you a dollar.  and for people that think the ps3 won't be b/c, you get what you f****** pay for.  Stop complaining and buy a version thats got b/c if you want it. THEY ARE STILL OUT AND WILL BE OUT.  If your a cheap sob and just want to b**** about not having features do us all a favor and just go be a xbot and hype them on their own forums.  You people are f****ing retarded

Meh I wonder why so many people are complaining now about this. >_> Its not like you didn't have the chance to purchase it in the beginning. Besides this lower price is good for those not willing to pay out so much,  like I said buy a cheap PS2 if you going to buy this verison of the PS3 if you didn't already have one.

seriously, sony must have one of the stupidest marketing departments in the world. sure, release the new cheapskate one, but what about the 80gb? do they think no one would like to have the ps3 with all the bells and whistles still on it? and as for the ps2 incompatibility...it must cost like an extra £2 to fit it, yet still they dont...

Soket - they look to be cutting BC out across the line, so anyone who pays more to buy the proper model with hardware base backwards compatibility will likely loose it the day they have to claim on Warranty. They wont be able to get BC again. Sony will just say sorry - we dont think you need it and we know better than our customers after all "we could release a brick and our customers would still buy it"...

I think that you people who says that "we could just have bought it in the beginning" or some other bla bla bla stuff.. you may not have concidered that some people wasnt born with money in their a**. I do wanna buy the whole ps3 .. the big pack etc. Yet i havent had the money to do so yet. I would buy it at the.. 5500kr. No problem. I just need the money. So you may concider there to be other reasons for people not having bought it yet.. and i think that sony is making a really bad move on this :

Its true - PAL regions Europe and Australia & New Zealand are getting it bad right now - but the US will have to follow, The new US 80GB has had half the guts removed (no CPU) and I bet the 40GB model released there will have both CPU & GPU removed too. The best model will turn out to be the old 60GB one - it has both CPU & GPU hence 100% compatibility & smooth performance. If you have one best hold onto those fellas - these ones are gold - it's gimped models from here on in.

The best region is Japan. They dont have to buy any gimped models infact they pay the least and have the best made PS3's and 100% full featured. Now they look to be getting treated exclusively with an even better 160GB model with extra bells and wistles. Sony is laying it on for the Japanese people. They are also getting the games first and quite a few Japan only titles. Lucky them!  I'm in Australia - I paid the most, got a gimped model and have a crappy selection of titles.
