87% of owners watch Blu-rays on PS3

Posted on January 8th, 2008 at 15:13 EDT

The Sony Corporation has announced this week that 87% of PlayStation 3 owners utilize their console to view Blu-ray movies.

Blu-ray Today distributed a pamphlet at CES 2008 this morning revealing the percentage of PS3 owners who watch Blu-ray movies and those of which who intend to always buy or rent Blu-ray movies as well.  Those numbers came back unexpectedly high at 87% for the former and 84% for the latter.

These figures were drawn from an internet-based survey conducted by Sony.

The reason this became news is due to the fact that it negates the allegations that PS3 owners do not influence the high definition format war.  It is very clear by these percentages that that is completely false.  With the ability to play Blu-ray discs out of the box, it’s not very realistic to believe it wouldn’t have an effect in the on-going war.

So far a total of three million units have been sold in North America alone.

According to Sony, the PS3 has outsold Microsoft’s HD DVD Add-on by a margin of 10-1 in the United States.

It only makes sense. Looking at the numbers worldwide it would be hard to believe that BR was selling so well unless it was thanks to the PS3.

Sony Did not want to loose the format war again so included blu ray in the PS3 it goes to prove they have learned from the Betamax V's VHS war.

Blu-ray had better win soon this war cause i´m tired of waiting to buy a blu-ray player. With only one format prices will drop and all movies will be availble for BR. I will probably buy a PS3

Soon the prices will drop for the BDs because HD-DVD is scr3wed.. Specially after Paramount switches to BDs which will inevitably happen... Found This on Yahoo.com- http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/64393

According to the Financial Times, Paramount has a clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp allowing it to switch to Blu-ray in the event that Warner was to do so. And exercising that clause is what's about to happen. It's also theorized that DreamWorks will follow Paramount, since the studios are closely tied together.

There just is no excuse to own a ps3 and not watch bluray movies on it, I mean Blockbuster video and Netflix offer BD rentals. It's true what they sy you know, Once you go Blu, you never turn back. I won't watch any movies on DVD anymore if there is a blu-ray version available, it is that much better.

You'd be a fool to own a PS3 and a HD tv and NOT take advantage by getting atleast one Bluray movie. Yeah the prices are high but you just have to watch for deals like the amazon buy one get one free sale,

Talk about a "DUH" article! Why do you think studios are moving to Blu-ray? Why do you think Blu-ray  out sells HD by such a wide margin?! It's because it's included in the PS3. This is exactly how Sony stomped Sega and the Dreamcast, because of it's DVD player included in the PS2. If it were not for the PS3, Blu-ray would be on it's deathbed. HD-DVD is a great product, but for studios, it's not about which is the better format... it's about numbers, and DUH... Blu-ray has the numbers.

The way i see it Sony might win a format war that will never make them any real money at the expense of losing a console war that surely would have been profitable.

The HD formats in my view will only ever be a stopgap, the market's not ready to leave DVD so soon and before they have any penetration digital downloads and possiblely a superior disc format will be on the horizon.

Those who believe that consumers are just waiting for a clear format winner before flocking to throw out their DVD collections and replace them all with HD may be disapointed. For the niche market that is interested in HD, it is important to note two things: (1) These consumers did not abandon HD-DVD as they purchased a big portion of players (2) The reason offered by Warner Bros was that the US economy was slipping and the fear that any further delays in launching HD would cause the industry to fail. The US is going into a resession and that's not the time to try selling expensive luxuries. Warner did not abandon HD-DVD because it was technologicaly infereior infact Warner could well have gone the other way.

Lots of us who browse tech websites may be interested in all the latest technologies but i'm not convinced that joe public is ready to take out another morgage on their home and upgrade their home entertainment system any time soon. Good luck Sony, but I'd like to see more attention given to games and winning the console war.

Anyway these are my thoughts, only time will tell

@ the cleaner..."cleaner" you are so full of FUD even after  your precious hddud has lost!

Blu-ray is and has been winning the whole time!! The consumer so far has chosen Blu-ray. hddud was never going to be good enough compared to Blu-ray.

You keep spreading your Fud around expecting somebody to bite. Guess what, nobody is biting or buying your BS.

And as for the console wars.....don't you worry about  that...PS3 will be on TOP and will make a profit (unlike your precious M$)  (Who's $ along with the huge Toshiba company couldn't buy Warner/New Line)   hahahahahahahah

Blu-ray will be a big $ generator for Sony and the BDA, don't you worry about that one either.

You are a joke cleaner, that is all.

Nobody is listening to you

BLU-RAY ROCKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

and so does PS3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, Could you please turn that down tru blu?

The Cleaner, No one says the adoption is going to be over night but when there is only one format left after the prices go down it is enevitable.

Lets compare this to DVD's. DVD's launched in 96 and really didn't make a dent in VHS sales until 2000 and beyond. That year they finally managed to get the prices own to more reasonable level and then the PS2 and later the xbox helped push the format along. Believe it or not the younger generation will invest heavely in movies.... not as much as games but it is safe to call alot of gamers movie buffs as well.

So now we have two HD formats that have only been on the market for 2 years. No one in their right mind is expecting pure market penetration and this is even after amazing reductions in price by both sides.
