Analyst: Blu-ray still faces challenges

David Mercer, the principle analyst for Strategy Analystics, has said that Sony’s Blu-ray format still has a lot of ground to cover in terms of convincing consumers to adopt the high definition platform, despite the recent demise of HD DVD.
“Blu-Ray disc has passed its first real test by beating HD-DVD,” said Mercer.
“But a much bigger challenge now lies ahead if Blu-Ray is to become as successful as DVD, and content owners, retailers and manufacturers must now demonstrate that they can work together to promote Blu-Ray effectively.”
Even so, Sony’s high def movie disc recently managed to top the two million sales mark in Europe, reaching the milestone at a faster rate than regular DVD.
Furthermore, Strategy Analystics has forecast that worldwide sales of stand alone Blu-ray players are expected to reach 100 million units by 2012.
Stay tuned for more Blu-ray news here at PSU as we get it.

Meh, Blu-ray will catch up with DVD im sure. As time goes on, DVD will become like CD. It will get phased out. Lets hope anyway lol

Who cares what they (analysts) think? Give the people time to adapt to blu-ray.

LMAO LMAO, yes, the only HD format out there with the backing of ALL studios and retail chains still faces major challenges. *sigh, The only thing they have to face is ignorant hicks who are happy with their DVDs and think HD is "nothing but fancy words"/

I really dont think Blu-ray will crush DVD anytime soon, DVD is a standard format, look how long it took to completely phase out VHS. It will thake that much time or maybe more to end DVD. Its still a young, and widely accepted format, and Blu is too expensive for smaller studios right know, I believe.

I think people forget that blu-ray is here for a long time, there is enough space on a blu-ray disk to cope with the next iteration of movies so even when 1080p becomes the new 720p and we get an even higher res I think we'll still be getting it on blu-rays. maybe we'll need newer players to decode the images but the disk will all be the same. i mean once the get the 200 gig disks sorted who knows what they'll get on there :)

Sometimes I can't stand "Analysts". They can Analyze and Over Analyze all they want for all I care.
Basically almost anyone that has an HDTV is going to be getting Blu-Ray DVD, so those "Analysts" can shut up and just watch Sony's Blu-Ray take over. There are already millions of people that have HDTV's around the world and they WILL be getting Blu-Ray because they will want to get the best out of their HDTV's.
As more HDTV's are sold, more Blu-Ray DVD's and Blu-Ray DVD players will be sold, it's just common sense and I don't need an Anaylst to tell me that.

Silly analysts. They are paid to be critical about everything we get excited about. It's a mind game they play. Once they say it will take for ever we as the consumers start to contemplate buying this stuff. Personaly I just noticed how a year ago they stoped releasing on VHS (maybe longer than that) but at the rate Blu-Ray is selling it will probably start taking over mid 2009. With the swich to standard digital signal for TV everyone will have to upgrade to an HD tv set. By now old CRTs r dieing anyway.

Most consumers won't know the difference until they get the right equipment. It only takes 1 Blu-ray to show you how nice HD movies look.

If HDTV's sell so will Blu-Ray players.
The PS3 has BR, so that will increase HDTV sales.
I don't see any change in BR sales except to increase due to now being the offical HD format. Its just a matter of time before it becomes the default movie format within all homes just as it was with DVD.
