BIA: Hell's Highway 'Realism' trailerWedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has said that he expects sales of Sony Corp’s PlayStation 3 to rise by 10 per cent in wake of Toshiba’s discontinuation of its HD DVD movie platform.
Speaking to Gamesindsutry.biz, Pachter commented, "Longer term, I think it's a huge boon for Sony, as most retail clerks will be instructed to push Blu-ray along with sales of HD monitors at holiday, so we should see a large increase in PS3 sales year-over-year at holiday.”
Pachter’s hypothesis is further echoed by Screen Digest’s Ed Barton and Richard Cooper, who both added, "With the format war over, and the end of the consumer indecision resulting from it, video consumers are likely to purchase the PS3 as the most cost effective, future proof Blu-ray player.”
"In the longer term lower price, higher specification set-top Blu-ray players will take on the role as best entry level Blu-ray player but not within the next 12 months. This could result in a small but significant rise in the number of PS3s bought over the next 12 months as Blu-ray players."
Elsewhere, Pachter also touched on the possibility of Microsoft adopting Blu-ray technology for its Xbox 360 console, suggesting that both an add-on or built-in device are unlikely to materialise.

GO Blu-ray!
There will be alot of relief in the announcement, format wars are tedious and expensive to the consumer and I imagine sony are feeling deservidly smug, and well done to them. My ps3 makes an excellent entertainment centre and im happy that blue-ray is the standard now. There's now the small mess of getting HD-DvD users some sort of of discount cos they really got screwed and it would be nice to bring them to the blu-ray world without too many hard feelings.
I agree with the anylist though, this should be a great boost for the ps3 and is only going to serve it well as it continues to rise as the true next generation console.
that would be stupid on sony's part, why would you let your rival use your technology in their machine. I agree the sale should increase because the format war is over, i say 40%, not 10%, lol
it just gets better and better.
indeed Hermin, its such a relief too.
loakers, why should HD-DVD owners get a discount, and who do you expect to give them that discount? they made a choice to buy HD-DVD, no one forced it on them. let them take a loss, this will help later in life with their other decisions, learn for your own mistake, stop looking for a hand out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HD-DVD buyers made their bed and now they can die in it.... er sleep in it.
They get no discount, except in germany where one retailer was taking a trade ins.
first the war on terror now the war on formats when will this end.Think of the children
DnA - i dont own an HD player
Call me idealistic, but it'd be nice to end the 'war' on a good feeling - eg, trade your HD player in for a discount on a blueray player. Nothing too big, just something that'll do nothing but boost the good feeling in the blueray camp as it fills with newcommers.
Nice, but please... Not the analysts!!!
Well the good news keep on coming
Looks like Blu-ray finally shot HD-DVD out of last stand, and is now corpse humping them. WE WIN!!! W00T!!!!
Sweet, thats great news. Looks like we have all supported and helped win the battle.
I feel bad for all the xbox360 users that got a hddvd drive to watch high defenition movies, man I feel bad for the people who even bought a 360. LOL
But in serious note go blu ray!!!!!! Do you guys think that M$ will go ahead and incorporate blu ray or sell an external drive for its 360 owners
M$ will eventually offer an external drive, but if they refused to incorporate the format they supported i doubt they will do it with Blu.
On a separate note, any smart and business savvy retailer wont give HD DvD owners a discount on Blu players, not even for a trade. Its not like they'd be able to resell them, the format is defunct. And in the end if the consumer really wants HD technology theyre gonna cough up the money anyways.
Everyone should know by now that its always a lose lose situation for the consumer in the end. thats why you learn to make the right choice the 1st time around.
SONY!!! DO NOT GIVE ANYTHING TO MICROSOFT!!! YES THEY MAY OFFER YOU VAST AMOUNTS OF MONEY BUT THEN THEY WILL EARN IT BACK FROM XBOTS WHO WILL TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!
The war is over. Ahh peace at last.
psn id: gingo... its been clear from the start that blu ray was going to be superior and it was also clear that the ps3 was the best value blu ray player on the market but still people ignored it but now they are starting to buy them
I agree with those that have felt that Sony should not allow Microsoft to make a blu-ray extension for the 360. The only positive to doing so is if you can convince Microsoft to extremely overpay for it.
On the other hand, I think about it in this sense. Sony told the world that they were looking towards the future. Microsoft and Nintendo both told them that they were wrong, that they should not force such technology on the average consumer now. The future is nearing and very soon, with Sony's Playstation 3 being the only game console that plays the latest DVD as well, the Wii and 360 will seem dated at a quicker rate. I could certainly see sales increasing by that amount that Pachter mentioned. Sony could use this as an opportunity to get more people involved in gaming. They may get it as a Blu-Ray player, but take a look at Metal Gear Solid(That should gets some fathers up out of the bed to play) and Tekken(Imagine mom kicking dad through the telephone booth. This prediction I think is accurate, considering the potential that Sony now has with the Playstation 3.
I'm super glad blu-ray won but I just don't see how this is going to increase sales of the ps3. I can see the sales of blu ray players increasing but I just don't see consumers going to buy p3's because the format war is over. In the end i think games are going to be the ultimate deciding factor in ps3 sales.
wow if MS does adapte to blu ray...they're such losers if they did cuz thats justcliaime 1 thing sony>MS PS3>360
What I'm thinking is people will possibly buy a PS3 just because they will see a regular Blu-Ray player that costs 250-300 and then see a PS3 that doesn't only play Blu-Ray but is also the most awesome gaming machine on the planet, and wont mind dishing out a 100 more for that.
I'm surprised. 10% seems a little low. As mentioned, it (PS3) is currently the most cost effective way to get your hands on a Blu-ray player. As such, it is positioned to donimate the Blu-Ray player market even more since it does so much more than play movies. I'll put my money on an increase closer to 20% than a mere 10%...That is unless a cheaper, high quality player doesn't come out in the mean time.
GO SONY!!! DROP DEAD GLOATWARE PEDDLERS aka MICROSOFT!!! Stick to selling bug riddled software
I think HOME will see more PS3s too.
i still find it funny that 95% of gamers hated the ps3 and said/wanted it to fail because it offered things the other competitors didn't and it took risks... good for you Sony,
i think there some of the most intellegent buisness men over at sony.... =]
If people begin to do what has been done with the PS2 as the premier format for playing movies at that time and now this, then yes you can some what say that blu-ray will become future proof if this carries over with that amount of success.
Please note the last sentence of this article: "Elsewhere, Pachter also touched on the possibility of Microsoft adopting Blu-ray technology for its Xbox 360 console, suggesting that both an add-on or built-in device are unlikely to materialize".
I hope Sony doesn't give M$ the Blu-Ray format to add to the 360.
Go blu ray indeed :D :P
SONY, listen to JstuFly and me DON'T GIVE MICROSOFT ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!! THEY WILL DO ANYTHING FOR ANYTHING THAT WOULD SCREW US OVER!!!
...Oh...GO BLU!
I also predict a huge drop in HD-DVD add-ons for the Xbox 360. Maybe I should work there too.
