Last month's hardware sales figures from the NPD Group show that Sony's PlayStation platforms had another very strong month.
PlayStation 3 itself was only 10,000 units behind Microsoft's Xbox 360, whilst PS2 wasn't far behind either. Nintendo's DS and Wii trumped everything however, with 518,000 and 453,000 sales respectively. The PSP came in at a fairly distant third with 185,000 units.
On the software side, the excellent Madden NFL 09 cleaned up. In the all-formats chart, the Xbox 360 version came first, the PS3 version second, and the PS2 version third, giving combined sales of approximately 2 million units.
Hardware Unit Sales
PlayStation 3 185.4K
PlayStation Portable 253.0K
PlayStation 2 144.1K
Xbox 360 195.2K
Wii 453.0K
Nintendo DS 518.3K
Top 10 SKU's August 2008
(includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)

2. PS3 | MADDEN NFL 09 | Aug-08 | 643K

NPD analyst, Anita Frazier, had these comments to add:
Overall
"August industry sales remain strong and realized a 9% gain over last August, although the month posted the first single-digit percentage growth in 27 months"
"Despite smaller growth this month, the industry is up 32% year-to-date and remains on target to achieve annual revenues in the range of $22 to $24 billion"
"Across hardware, software and accessories, products for the Wii platform contributed 28% of total industry dollar sales for the month of August"
Hardware
"The PSP and PS3 systems achieved the greatest percentage gain of all now-gen systems. The sales acceleration of these systems, combined with the recent Xbox 360 price cuts should fuel future growth of this category"
Software
"Madden NFL '09 was the top-selling game of the month, and launched with 2.3 million units out of retail doors in it's first month, besting last year's '08 title by 2%. Year after year, the industry can count on the Madden release to bring folks into stores during the relatively lazy days of late summer"
"Year-to-date, Grand Theft Auto IV remains the top-selling game at 4.8 million units sold in the U.S. through August"
"Wii Play continues its remarkable track record, achieving a 44% attach rate to new Wii hardware sales for the month. It has remained a top-10 game each month since it's February 2007 introduction"
Accessories
"Xobx Live point cards and gold membership cards represented three of the top-10 accessory items for the month which sheds a little light onto the popularity of this service to Xbox 360 fans"

@Rav3nas
yeah they should. sony says its not necessary but i think it is if they really want to sell through the roof. even though it will sell well this holiday, it could do better with a price job. with the economy the way it is now, parents/grandparents may look for the cheapest console even though they know the ps3 is better, or not know for that matter. 2008 (and 09) is the year of the ps3, and i want sony to do everything in its power to prove it so. (although it already has with the killer apps coming soon. if only sony advertised their games mor.)

Only NPD, so only North America. (AKA, Microsoft's territory.) After a huge price drop, M$ should be ashamed of themselves for only outselling the PS3 by 10k.
Sad, it really is.

honestly who the fck wants an xbox 360, if we're going for new gameplay its wii. but if we;re goin for classic gameplay and graphics, you might as well go all out with a PS3 rather than a gimped box of limitations 360, thats why its so cheap, is basically gonna be obsolete next year

I have a couple comments towards the idiots who have already posted comments. First off, the NPD numbers do NOT count replacements. That would not make any sense at all. And to the one who said that it is sad that after a huge price drop its sad that 360 only won by 10k... how stupid are you? Honestly? The huge pricedrop was in the current month of september. if you are referring to the dropping price of the 20 gb 360 as huge, you are ignorant. That was only to phase out the old version. you sony fanboys should be use to phasing out console packages. Please think before you post things that make no sense at all. If the 360 outsold PS3 in august, just imagine what the actual pricedrop will do to sales. You know PS3 is going to be outsold big time and you dont want to admit it.

"The PSP came in at a fairly distant third with 185,000 units."
Uhhh.... what? According to your numbers it's "PlayStation Portable 253.0K". That's a big chunk you're biting out of the PSP cake.

360 will fall once games require more disc capacity. The 360 is almost at it's full capability as a system while ps3 is barely scratching the surface. You've already have games that aren't possible on the 360: MGS4 and littlebigplanet. Expect more of the same from here on out. The only thing that's keeping 360 afloat is Live and we'll have to see what sony brings with home. I've played with the beta and it's nice but hopefully when public release comes it'll have more up it's sleeve to have all the advantages point to ps3.

To: I own both......uhhh so is your tag name supposed to give you any credibility? Big deal even if they're wrong. Too Human & Ninja Gaiden 2 sales didn't help much. So much for "all of Micro$oft exclusives" so far! Only 10K yet the 360 had a 1yr head start and supposedly costs less? PS3 is doing very well despite what Micro$oft wants you to believe. Dont be blind, the party for Sony doesn't even start for a while. This is just the warm up!! Socom, RFOM2, Motorstorm2, Killzone2, LBP, InFamous, GT5, Uncharted2, The Agency, and the list actually still goes on!

PS2 is still Sonys Best Product...
Ps3 has a really small Game sortiment after more than 1 Year of MArket... I'm a Fan of PS but i think the point for 3rd GEN Consoles was owned by Xbox360 they got many games and most of Games for PS 3 are multiplatform so they have to live with Grafics made for Xbox360.
I'm a lover of RPG and PS2 was great for me... But i'm really thinking about to buy a Xbox360 cause i'm missing RPG for PS3. Sony made a super console but they forgot one thing, consoles have to be much cheaper and easyer than a PC...

I love it how the PS2 still sells so well, this really is a shining example of how well Sony do business.
Once again Nintendo do extremely well, completely expected, but I can't help but wonder why, I own a Wii, well, thats a lie, I just sold it because I never used it.
Expect to see 360 sales up for next months results, price cut plus more exclusives will show in their figures. I'm actually suprised with my 360, I seem to be playing it again, Red faction 3 beta is fun and of course Halo 3, but I've been playing my way through Too Human and it's really quite enjoyable.
Last but by no means least, the current gen Sony consoles are not selling as fast as I thought they would, however I can see sales increasing with the release of LittleBigPlanet, but that won't show in figures for another few months.

@20 by all means the ps3 as a multimedia unit is much cheaper than buying/building a computer with the same amount of money. The ps3 is already quite cheap, i agree its not cheap as a console, but as a multimedia unit its a bargain.

@13 I'm pretty sure when he said he wondered if they counted replacements, I figured he meant the same person having to buy a second or third console from the big M. You know, those first consoles arent covered by MS anymore. But of course they do, there is no way to tell.

shows the ps3 needs a price drop, after all this time there`s no excuse for ps3 being behind other then its price.how can devs be expected to convert to ps3 when the install base is still falling behind 360.look at the wii.its got nothing to do with exclusive games.credit crunch, oil prices, food prices, job losses all means price matters to people...cut the price now sony in time for the good games in october does not have to be permanant just tempory.

Yeah, where is Sony's advertising? Personally Id show a dude getting the RROD on his Crapbox, kicking the chit out of it, then going to Best Buy and picking up a PS3 and playing MGS4 on it. I should be in advertising.

well i i would have hoped that the ps3 would have sold more than the xbox 360 but i guess its good for now! Still i am a bit surprised that the ps3 is gaining as much as they maybe should have.
