Sony PlayStation 3 sales in Australia have topped the 150,000 mark, falling shy of the company’s October forecast of 160,000 units sold in the region by the end of 2007.

Research firm GfK Australia has revealed that total sales in the territory have reached just over 155,000, with 48,000 having been sold within the fourth quarter of 2007, thanks largely to the introduction of the cheaper 40GB model (AUD 699.99)

Elsewhere, the PlayStation Portable sold 45,000 units during the 2007 holiday season, with PlayStation 2 sales even more impressive, selling 81,000 units in the same period.

    2008 should see solid sales spikes for PS3 as it gets wider marketing in not only games but also as a digital media hub!  It's still got a lot of catching up against all competition, but I'm confident SONY will persevere and start picking up this year...all year!!  This will be Australia's Living!

    PS.  "Well done to all fellow PS3 Aussies!!!"  ;-)

    Being an Aussie myself I can fully understand this.  I mean its the reason why we are one of the biggest polluters on the planet.  We like everything big, fast and powerful.  None of this small effecient Wii sh!t.  F@ck that off, give us something loud and power hungry.  Fortunately the ps3 fits that role perfectly.  Unfortunately all my friends have 360's, oh well.

    Indeed, this is excellent news. The majority of people I know all own 360's, but are seriously considering trading them in and purchasing a PS3, which is a good sign. I'm an Aussie also, so its nice now knowing that there will be more local-ish games online.

    psn id: gingo.... it seems that sony only have two more areas to start getting more sales than xbox in the US and UK which unfortunately are 2 of the biggest areas and where xbox 360 currently have the upper hand

    Maybe so gingo, but I think 2008 will be the year for PS3. Alot of my friends have held off on buying a PS3 because of the games out, however they plan on purching one in spring when some the big hitters come out. When FFXIII lands in early 2009 it will deliver one of the final hay makers to the crashbox.

    @zarajoe

    Don't worry about the PS3 as its one clean product. In greenpeace's guide to greener electronic, the PS3 kicks as$ as it ranked number 3 in their 6th issue with a score of 7.3/10 based off the use of toxic chemicals and recycling. The Wii came in last but where I'm looking on Joystiq there is no score, I'm sure I read elsewhere that the Wii was the first product to recieve a zero? 360 got 2.7.

    So PS3 is made from cleaner materials and Sony has a good recycling programme, while the other 2 don't bother, too busy trying to make profit I suppose?

    I'm an Aussie too and agree with zarajoe & James-Jojo

    Most people I know have Xbox 360's but traditionaly Playstation does very well here particularly the PS2 - I mean everyone has one. Nintendo products like Gamecube & N64 didnt sell at all. It just never appealed to Australians who buy V8 cars instead of fancy fours. Weired thing is Wii is on endless back order in Australia where as you can buy an Xbox 360 no problem and definately there is ample stock piles of PS3.

    Something has definately changed. I think Xbox 360 has gained the status of the current V8 gaming console. Halo 3 had a big effect but the game I hear the most about is Mass Effect - seriously most of my mates are telling me to trade in my PS3 for an Xbox Elite & Mass Effect. I get the sh.its because apart from Unchartered - I got nothing that I regard to be as good. MGS4 & Haze should hopefuly change that.

    Anyway as for Nintendo - I used my credit card loyalty points to buy a Wii just before Christmas and it has not arrived yet. Someone is buying them all. Maybe Aussies have the big V8 parked outfront but have started a closet affair with their Wii's.

    Thats great news, I'm sure Sony also mention that in one of the provided booklets, but I wasn't talking about what the consoles are made from.  It never even crossed my mine.  I was talking about how the ps3 sucks up more power then the 360 (last I checked) and seeing as that the majority of Australias power comes from burning coal, every extra watt makes a difference.

    I saw a story of this in the local Sydney Morning Herald news paper. It said that of the 150,000 units moved Sony had given away just over 20,000 units for free as part of the Bravia TV redemption promotion. (buy a Bravia TV of any size and get a PS3 for free). That promo is still going and is how I got my second PS3.
