Electronics retail giant Best Buy has a large say in the outcome of the format war, and they've now chosen their preferred format. Beginning this March, Best Buy will recommend Blu-ray as their HD format of choice.
“With the explosion of HDTVs, customers are hungry for quality, high definition content. We believe our move to feature Blu-ray should help consumers feel confident in their hi-def content choices,” said Mike Vitelli, Best Buy’s senior vice president, Home Solutions. "We believe that Blu-ray is the right solution for consumers.”
Although the company will continue to carry HD-DVD products, those will take a back seat to the parallel Blu-ray products.
“We’ve listened to our customers, and we are responding,” said Brian Dunn, Best Buy’s president and COO. “Our decision to shine a spotlight on Blu-ray Disc players and other Blu-ray products is a strong signal to our customers that we believe Blu-ray is the right format choice for them.”
Best Buy is one company of many others that have chosen Blu-ray as their format of choice in recent months, the most major being Warner Bros. Studios, who will produce only Blu-ray products come May. With each passing day, the future looks more and more Blu.

More customers for best buy and most importantly more customers buying ps3s!
psn id: Blaqstar... The future looks blu... I love how their slogan sounds like the future looks miserable...
anyway thats good... i wonder what happens to all the janky hd dvd stuff... sucks balls for them... well im just happy with my ps3...
kay universal can you now come over to blu-ray? kthxbye
hahahahahaha....since best buy started it the other big electronic retailers will follow (circuitcity) then soon paramount n universal will support blu ray
Yay! I work for Best Buy so I love reading GOOD decisions being made!
This, along with the other big Blu-Ray announcements, will really help PS3 sales. When people realize that for relatively the same price they can also have the premiere gaming system, the choice becomes rather obvious. The only way this wouldn't happen would be if PS3 had the same glaring quality control issues that our friends over at "cash rules everything around me, dollar dollar bills y'all" Microsoft keep having. Once this whole format war is officially, not just functionally, dead and buried, look for a spike in PS3 sales.
yup guys the future looks blu alright and its my fav color
blu -ray FTW
now i hope they dont bad mouth the ps3 still because they always seem to do so. hopefully with this move they'll start actually learning about the ps3 and telling customers what the best choice is between ps3 and 360 (considreing the customers care bout high-def movies/dvds) and movie editing and other stuff the ps3 can do pretty awesomely
man when will toshiba give it up already I know yall have pride but the humble pie isnt that sour, i give credit for lasting this long but relieve everyone a headache and let this format war go, you'll always have the next format to look forward to winning, blu ray is victor as of now
@naucious
I wouldn't be suprised if Toshiba behind closed doors were already manufacturing blu-ray players. As when Toshiba admit defeat of their own format, they will have to announce that they will now use blu-ray, but they will need to be ready to launch. Toshiba couldn't afford to be left so far behind in blu-ray development.
whilst HD DVD cowers in a far corner in the darkest part of the store.... which is still pretty well lit, I must say...
I just want it over with so everything is on Blu-Ray, I want Batman, Bourne and a bunch of others in HD, but I can't get them on Blu-Ray, so I don't get them at all.
This no longer surprises me. Too many switching already. Warner was the one to deliver the final turning point. There is no way for the hd dvd to recover from this.
Some people told me i was crazy. That blu-ray would be vanquished by hd-dvd, well that didn't happen. So To all who doubted me (F)(U).
And by the way when i see people in the stores who STILL dont know the difference...well u all can guess how much i despise em.

Just total pwnage. I'm telling you by the end of March Universal and or Paramount will be releasing in Blu.
Now they just need to make sure they understand what the PS3 offers in terms of BD playback. Primarily the fact it is a 2.0 compliant device.
I've got a BestBuy opening up right by my house and I'm hoping to start working there. Guess I don't really have to recommend Blu-ray to everyone now, retailers are doing a good enough job.
HD DVD bargain bin!
about time! I was in a best buy a few months back and actually talked to a customer who had just been told by a best buy employee that HDDVD was the way to go. I asked him if he had any questions about HD movies and went on to explain to him how the Best buy guy was wrong and that BluRay was the way to go
Just give it up HD-DVD, the world is Blu! :D
I said this from the beginnig but all the Xbox fans denied it and said I was crazy.... But now the tables have turned and I see an even brighter future for the PS3. I mean why buy a stand alone Blu Ray player when you can get the best of both worlds with the PS3... Blu-Ray plus gaming.... Why wouldn't you opt or that?
I really dun know why HD-DVD is still around hearing this constant news of Blu-Ray being chosen as the only or prefered format for... just about every studio and retail chains everywhere.
Even sales for HD-DVD have dropped drastically since more and more studios stop supporting it and eventually HDDVD will be the way of the betamax with those who bought into it cursing themselves for doing so.
Toshiba and others connected to the HD-DVD project are really just grabbing money right now, sucking confused consumers in for a round before heading out I suppose.
Take that HD DVD
