Despite some disappointment associated with the PSP, Sony’s flagship PlayStation 3 console exhibited an incredibly strong showing at this year’s E3 Media and Business Summit, offering up a healthy dose of software from both third and first party companies alike. Despite ample pickings for our nominees for the best PS3 game of the show, we’ve managed to narrow it down to the following four games, which we believe ultimately display a certain level of quality that distinguishes them from the rest of the pack.

Developed by Guerrilla Games, Killzone 2 has consistently remained one of the PS3’s most anticipated titles since its debut at E3 2005 over three years ago. Featuring meticulously crafted visuals, visceral, action-packed gameplay and extensive multiplayer functionality, Killzone 2 is set to offer one of the most intense experiences on a home console thus far. The game picks off following the events of the original title and its follow-up, Liberation, with players assuming control of ISA squad leader, Sev, as the unit mounts its crucial invasion of the planet Helghan, home to the notorious race known as the Helghast.

Insomniac’s highly anticipated FPS sequel looks set to deliver more than its fair share of standout moments when the game launches exclusively on PS3 later this year. Kicking off at the height of the Chimera’s invasion of North America, Resistance 2 signals the return of Nathan Hale from the original game as he battles against a relentless adversary in a variety of locations throughout the US. Concurrently, Hale must also continue to resist the Chimera virus that resides within him. In addition to a cinematic single-player campaign, the game also sports an online cooperative experience for up to eight players, as well as competitive multiplayer battles for up to 60 gamers. With big weapons, massive environments and gigantic, hulking boss creatures, Resistance 2 positively exudes all the qualities of a surefire blockbuster hit.

Set in a post-apocalyptic United States, Fallout 3 arrives fresh from the creative minds of Bethesda Softworks, the developers behind the highly extolled Elder Scrolls franchise. Taking the form of an action RPG, players must assume control of a fellow survivor holed up in Vault 101, a fallout shelter built on the remains of Washington DC. Venturing into the desolate wastelands outside in search of your father, gamers can explore a vast open world abundant with side-quests to perform, characters to meet and all manner of grotesque creatures to battle. As with Oblivion, players can shape the path of their character depending on how you interact with the world around you, and includes an intuitive combat system using VATs, allowing for a unique blend of both real-time and turn-based combat. Fallout 3 combines a gritty, bleak aesthetic with a compelling narrative to immerse players in what is shaping up to be one of the most extravagant single-player outings of this current generation thus far.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing and quirky titles announced for PS3 to date, LittleBigPlanet represents a key step in Sony’s plans to drive the presence of user-created content for its flagship gaming console. Owning much of the media spotlight since its initial unveiling two years ago, Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet affords gamers the opportunity to construct their own worlds by controlling a small character known as Sackboy. Players can achieve this solo, or team up with other players to form a co-operative gameplay experience. A key component of LittleBigPlanet is sharing your unique environments with other gamers, allowing you to tackle other “patches” by performing actions such as jumping, climbing, pushing and grabbing navigate the world around you. Furthermore, you’ll also be able to face off against various boss creatures throughout the game, as well as avoid multiple enemies and objects that aim to hamper your progress. For gamers out there with an active imagination and penchant for driving their own content, LittleBigPlanet is undoubtedly one of the most crucial releases on the horizon in the coming months.

And 'Best PS3 Game of E3 2008' goes to...

Edging out some very stiff competition (seriously, we debated this one for hours on end), Bethesda’s Fallout 3 nabs our crown for Best PS3 game of E3 2008. Featuring some of the most intricately designed visuals we’ve seen to date, this post-apocalyptic epic not only looks the business, but offers an incredibly vast, captivating gameplay experience explored through its bleak, open-ended wastelands of North America. With an intuitive combat system, dozens of classes to master, not to mention the inclusion of two viewpoints and gameplay styles to suit your own personal preference, Fallout 3 is the one game to watch out for when it finally hits stores, appropriately enough, this fall.

i am goin to have to disagree with this only because i really want killzone 2, and fallout isnt an exclusive even though it does look like it will be really good

Exclusivity didn't factor into the decision. PS3 exclusive games often feature better graphics and execution, so we took that into account of course, but the raw fact that Fallout 3 is available on another platform didn't change our decision in any way. In the end, we looked at each game for what it was and picked what we thought was the best one. It was a really, really hard choice between all of them, especially LBP and Fallout 3.

psn id: gingo... i would agree with this from what i've seen in gameplay videos and trailers but since i am not a big rpg fan i would have to say resistance 2 or LBP is my ps3 game of the show from what i have seen

Fallout 3? Please. Guys are as bad as GameTrailers picking Resident Evil 5 as the best PS3 game there.

im buying all of those so i dont care all though i have to say im more impressed with lbp and resistance 2 and killzone 2 than fallout 3  just the features and the things those games are doing impress me more than fallout but yeah they are all great

i will not disagree until i play(buy) them all but i thought a game would finally be picked as the best without having to be..so..full of despair.

    LBP is my most anticipated.

  13. smallvillefreak

    • 5:31pm EDT - July 31st, 2008

I'm sorry, but for how long fallout 3 is taking, I really thought it would look better than it did.  I hate the pause, pick your target and execute feature and the enemy interaction looked incredibly crappy.  He like ran up to the dude, stop in his stride and lets you shoot him.  I'm talking about the in-game footage I saw.  The game looks like it sucks.

  14. Eric

    • 5:34pm EDT - July 31st, 2008

Listen folks. We respect your many opinions, but you haven't played any of these titles (unless you played LBP at Comic-Con). Dave went into E3 expecting LittleBigPlanet to impress him the most, but he came out with LBP as his second most anticipated PS3 title of the year. It's as simple as that. For a game like Fallout 3, videos don't do it justice. We're not dissing any of these other games - we're all as excited about them as you are. In fact, we might even be more excited about them than you are ;).

Just figured I'd let you know what I was thinking whilst reading all of your comments - not that there's anything wrong with respectfully disagreeing with our joint desicion.

I'm buying all of them but I think it should've been split between Fallout 3 and Little Big Planet. PSN:bblas Feel Free To Add

  17. Papaduke

    • 5:42pm EDT - July 31st, 2008

I thought Oblivion was terrible this game you don't even need to shoot an enemy just lock onto them and bam their dead looks retarted too me. Resistance 2 FTW

  18. singlestrike

    • 5:48pm EDT - July 31st, 2008

I personally don't understand how Resistance 2 was bested, but, then again, I don't understand any of these games since I haven't experienced them myself. If Dave is really shooting for Fallout 3 - even if it's not an exclusive title - I'll be sure to at least give it a look. The only thing that raised a red flag on Fallout 3 was a previous suggestion of the Game of the Year award... Even over MGS4. Sorry, but that's a no-no. :P

  19. PROTOTYPE

    • 6:07pm EDT - July 31st, 2008

I would have gone for LBP or KZ2 myself but I couldn't care less who wins the award they are all gonna be awesome anyways.

  21. TheRichMan

    • 6:40pm EDT - July 31st, 2008

Well..... I think LBP should definitely have taken this one, all of the others are something we have seen before, with new wrapping. Don't get me wrong, they are all going to be great, i'm sure, but LBP is introducing an entire new type of gameplay, and it's going to be great without focusing on killing and shooting. There are too many FPS games out there, I think after Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 they should just stop, because i'm sure nobody wil be able to beat those.

  22. smallvillefreak

    • 6:45pm EDT - July 31st, 2008

I'm gonna say it now, simply because the in-game video was so lame, I'll never and I mean NEVER buy fallout 3.  And that crappy trailer they showed pissed me off.  Give me a real trailer, not some gay gimmick.

  23. Toky

    • 6:58pm EDT - July 31st, 2008

this lame game gets no dlc on ps3, that makes it incomplete. LBP all the way.

    and wheres INFAMOUS???

  24. FailedEXE

    • 7:08pm EDT - July 31st, 2008

Im not too thrilled about Fallout 3 either, but I have not played the first 2 either so I don't know how good the game really is.  I would choose Resistance 2 over it, but that would be pushing it.  Im more excited for Valkyria Chronicles.

  25. stovich

    • 8:01pm EDT - July 31st, 2008

Wow, you guys must really be starving for RPGs to go with fallout3. I'm embarrassed for you.

  26. The Master

    • 8:11pm EDT - July 31st, 2008

Really? LBP as number 2? Obviously there's some bias towards some gameplay styles here, I love me a good RPG but I still wouldn't put Fallout 3 above KZ2 or R2, and LBP wouldn't even be close to the top of my list, probably closer to the very bottom.

@eric you guys need choose what best ps3 game by rolling poll or something because you guys journalists so you guys need listen peoples opinions it's comunity not just few team choosing game that anticapeted this year it's probably wrong. even it's says best ps3 game and you guys should choose what game looking great and exciting peoples on ps3

I respect your opinion (obviously in the minority) but I have to join everyone else and say - wtf are you thinking?

LBP or Resistance 2 absolutely dominates here. But that's just your opinion, so it's all good.

  29. T-Dogg400

    • 10:28pm EDT - July 31st, 2008

Im saying that LBP was the E3 game of the year so far, not Fallout 3 - i will be buying them all once it comes out.

fallout 3 been waiting for this game for ages. ps3 version been in development 3 years and although the 360 is getting exclusive dlc ive heard that the 360 version lags a lot whereas the ps3 version is smooth as they had to lower the amount of pixels on the 360 version as it wouldnt fit on the disc which they didnt have to do with the ps3 version.

Hm. Great article, PSU. It must of been a tough decision to choose Fallout 3. After reading some of the comments, some people are just plain idiots. Sorry, but some of these comments are ridiculous. They choosed Fallout 3.. Get over it.

  33. Kane

    • 5:03am EDT - August 1st, 2008

Eeeeh? Turn based action? Wtf? I don't want a turn based FPS. Other than that, it sounds cool.

  34. Girugamesh

    • 7:05am EDT - August 1st, 2008

    @Altair-Assassin

People might take your comment (calling everyone an idiot) a little more seriously if you didn't say that PSU "choosed" Fallout 3. Yeaah....

No one here is an idiot, kid. We just respectfully disagree. I've seen plenty of Fallout 3, and it's not looking too hot.

As much as I like Fallout 3’s idea of picking out body parts and watching the bullets rip bodies apart in slow motion; I have never been more excited over a game as I am with LittleBigPlanet.   Every time I see a new video of it, I get a smile on my face.  Shouldn't the best game be a game that lets you create your own game?  Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth.

    • 11:27am EDT - August 1st, 2008

Buying them all, starting with Fallout 3 since it's coming out first in October 07, then LBP October 21, then Resistance November 04, last but not least Killzone 2 Feb. 2009. In that order..........H3lls yeah, Bo0y!

Ok, first off Fallout has a bigger following than all 3 of those other games COMBINED in the video game industry from games that came out a DECADE ago. I'm willing to bet 90% of you bashing Fallout 3 and the PSU decision have never even played 1 or 2.  This game isn't supposed to be an FPS. It's not even supposed to appeal to FPS-only gurus.  You guys talk about originality of your FPS and then cry when they don't chose your HALO clone of which there are HUNDREDS.  Oh wow, you move the mouse and click on an enemy while strafing around walls, SO FUN!  "Oblivion with guns"... rofl dude, you have brain damage.  Seriously... open your eyes and play something that's not the exact same thing with a different texture.

As for the targetting you're talking about... That's optional.  That was their implementation of the turn-based feature of the 2 original Fallouts.  The point of an RPG is to build up your character, earn new gear, experience, etc.  You don't just start off 1 shotting everything in the game like the videos.  The previews and trailers are made to show what the game is capable of, not the actual play experience.  An RPG is way too difficult to relay to the public in a 2 minute clip.

Maybe you should PLAY the games, instead of coming onto forums and bashing the PSU employees for their decision on the games they PLAYED, their experience, and opinion (which was shared by many of them.)

Some of you should probably spend less time playing video games altogether, because it's difficult to even comprehend half of your replies due to lack of punctuation and grammar.

Grats PSU for not chosing a clone that's been done a hundred times and for actually choosing something with originality from the ground up.

    Wall of text CRITS you.

Good lord, must we suffer through another season of FPS games? No matter how good these games look they arent worth more than a rental to me because essentially they are all the same game. I like RPGs, but real RPGs, Fallout 3 might look shiny but it doesn't count as an RPG in this fan's book. If it is Oblivion with guns, it sounds like itll be a massive poop stain. I won't rag on the picks above,  I just can't figure out why these FPS games keep coming out. The genre hasn't been buyable in a long time.
