Blog calls Resident Evil 5 "Racist"

Criticism about the content included in games is nothing new, as developer Rockstar discovered about Manhunt 2 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. However, the gaming industry may be facing its first public outcry over a game being racist even before it has been given a release date.
The blog Black Looks, which comprises of primarily African American women, blasts the 2008 game Resident Evil 5 by commenting:
"The new Resident Evil video game depicts a white man in what appears to be Africa killing Black people. The Black people are supposed to be zombies and the white man’s job is to destroy them and save humanity…
This is problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young… fearing, hating, and destroying Black people."
Capcom has not issued a statement yet about the blog post. However, the reprecussions of the blog are sure to send shockwaves through the gaming community as game developers employ more and more mature content in their games.

I noticed this right away when I saw the trailer. I haven't decided yet if I think it's racist or not, Africa's population is mostly black.

What an ignorant comment to make. The game takes place in Haiti, not 'what looks to be Africa'. This blogger obviously knows nothing about the game other than the fact that "omg black people" are in it. Obviously the goal of this game is to eradicate all blacks... Give me a break. If the prospect of dead black people is such a disturbing thought for these bloggers, perhaps they should stop their arm chair quarterbacking on video games over a year from release and focus their efforts on preventing, get this, REAL LIFE violence on black people in our cities.

omg, this is interesting. altough i dont think this game should be viewed as being racist, giving that he game is not even out yet. although i do find my self in rare but racist situations i just ignore it. as a foot note i'm going to ask if crack down got any critism of being racist toward mexican and spanish related people?

Great, another game that could be black listed due to mature content. My question is the whole race thing is always questionable, and based on perspective. In this case it's someone from the black comunity voicing out because of a "white guy in army gear killing black people in africa." First, what if it was a black guy killing white people. Or if it was a black guy killing black people. It all comes down to people killing people. I don't get why we still have to have race involved. If people keep pointing it out then people will continue to be racist. Don't get me wrong, I have not seen why this game is where it is, it may have a good reason for the setting, but you never know mabey it is.

Now i know why i dont like alot of black people, they always complain if something has to do with a black person that isnt a good thing. Alot of black people complain, and they will get there way, but if it was a white man, or white women, they would not care at all. They would say absolutely nothing. Unless they had a good reason.

I stay in South Africa and I agree with u guys, why is there no such thing as racism against white people?, but anything that hints that any black person is inferior is considered racist? Here in South Africa us whites are about 8% of the population, while 90% are black, surely the minority SHOULD be more sensitive to offense than the majority, yet even here it isnt. I'm not racist, after all, I'm also African lol

I think the mother fu***** who run that website are racist. They don't get angry whenever a bunch of eastern european white people get killed in Resident Evil 4, but they don't like it when black people are killed. The story takes place in Africa, so what do they expect, for there to be no black people in Africa? How ridiculous would that be? We've seen a 5 MINUTE SCENE of the game...for all we know right after this he flies to Alaska and kills eskimos then flies to Japan and kill Asians then to Switzerland to finish off all the white people over there. Those girls don't even know the plot of the game!! I don't myself since i haven't searched for if it even has been revealed. But my guess is something that a WHITE american man makes some sort of chemical that infuses all the African that makes them feral and then the player controls this guy who kills all of them and probably gets life needed help by several black people.

The only racism I see here is the person on the blog who made that comment. Why does it have to be a white man killing black people. Labelling people as black and white is what should be considered racist. It isn't a white man killing blacks, it is a person killing other people (well, zombies actually). If they're going to get upset over the killing in this game, then they should be upset over killing in all other video games too, unless they think that killing is only a problem if the people being killed are black.

lol F that. I was Leon killing the Spanish (my own people) in RE4 and I didn't mind. I find it darned cool if it takes place in Africa. The environment creates a whole new feeling. Also knowing that voodoo was and is practiced in some areas such as this makes a perfect reason to have zombies.

After watching the trailer for the first time, I could kinda see why the blogger made the comment but obviously this person never played any past ResEvil games. I don't think its racist but I could see some feeling airy about it.
Hopefully the media doesn't get a hold of this one, it could kill the game or might sell many because of its controversy. Key word of the day, "Double Standard". -

this thing depends on the situation, the AC comment was stupid, if you think of it, its war and between 2 groups, in RE:5 if the story takes the dude to africa cause they killed all the zombies in the other parts then ok, but if its just about location and having the same characters just new continent then u can call it racism since why would you be a white man in africa killing zombies besides the devs wanting that same character?
the chance of meeting black dude in america and eu is much more then white man in africa, the chance of white man beeing in african army is minimal or even any kind of freedom or anti zombie group, but its not rare to see black dude in army when u live in the us or eu.
i havent seen the trailer, but if its kinda like white man joining a group or team of black guys fighting there then it could be something else but if he flew to africa just to kill zombies that doesnt threath his life then thats weird

I've said it numerous times already ever since the first trailer appeared that this was going to happen. The gamers aren't going to be bothered, it was always going to be the non-gaming public that attacks it. Capcom isn't racist regardless of how racially insensitive it is. Capcom is a bunch of Japanese people not White people, but of course just as I predicted, it's going to catch hll for it. I really wished capcom had a few people that would have told them earlier that White on Black racism is something they needed to be careful of before the trailers came out. They really screwed the pooch on this one.
