Blu-ray kicking HD DVD with a lead of 85:15

Posted on January 17th, 2008 at 17:17 EDT

According to Nielsen, which weekly reports hi-def sales, the Blu-ray movie sales outsold the HD-DVD movie sales with a lead of 85:15 in the week ending January 13th. This is the first full week after Warner Brothers announced they would start to support Blu-ray exclusively starting June this year.

In 2007 the Blu-ray movie sales outsold the HD-DVD movie sales by a margin of 64:36. And in the first week of this year, Blu-ray outsold HD-DVD 65:35.

The best sold hi-def movie this time is 3:10 to Yuma, which is an exclusive Blu-ray title. Last week it was Resident Evil: Extinction, also an exclusive Blu-ray title. The best sold HD-DVD was The Kingdom, which only sold 10% as many copies as 3:10 to Yuma. None of the HD-DVD movies made it in the top 10 last week.

This will be the NEW generations version of the beta-max issue... Instead of us bringing up beta, the younger gerations will bring up HD-DVD. LOL

HD-DVD - give up now while still losing....or give up later and lose everything!!!  A loss in sales now is better than a MAJOR BIG LOSS later in the very near future!!!  Checkmate!

Think the HD-DVD camp should give up the ghost!

If only Paramount would see sense and use their 'back-up clause' to come back to blu-ray it'd all be over.

what would really be cool is a price cut for bd, 25-30euros for one film is alot, then even dvd will sell less than bd

Toshiba just needs to give up. Blu-ray has won and that's not going to change

Isn't it easier to just say that blue ray sold 5.6 times more than HD-DVD? or 5.6:1??????

And please don't tell me it is because of the decimals, it is much easier to mentally compare 5.6:1 than 85:15... this seems like just a way to make it seems like a lot more than it actually is... although 5.6:1 is a lot....

I love it! Now if Toshiba would just give in and stop selling $150 HDDVD players, maybe the war would be over.
