Blu-ray nears 3 million units worldwide

Posted on December 4th, 2007 at 04:57 EDT

We recently told you that Blu-ray saw tremendous success during the week of Black Friday by having 72.6% of high-definition titles going to the Blu-ray camp, leaving only 27.4% of high-def titles going to HD-DVD.

Reports are now showing that the high definition format is close to hitting the 3 million units sold milestone, one that will create a substantial lead over HD DVD.

The Blu-ray Disc Association is reporting that through the Black Friday period, Blu-ray has sold 2.7 million units from initial launch last year to November 24, 2007. 2 Million of these units come from the PlayStation 3, which can be complimented by the lower priced 40GB unit recently introduced.

This is compared to the 750,000 units of HD-DVD units sold to date, with 250,000 of these coming from the Xbox 360 HD DVD add on. What makes this so appealing is that there are HD DVD units sold as low as USD 99 with the lowest Blu-ray unit going for $399.

“Despite the $99 HD DVD fire sale, Blu-ray movies were flying off the shelves in this crucial holiday shopping period.” says a spokesperson from the NPD Group.

Overall Blu-ray has sold 4 million titles since launch while HD DVD has sold only 2.5 million units.

to Leeman99.  Do you know how large a 1080P movie is?  Yes you "could" compress the crap out of it, but then what is the point of getting a great picture just to degrade it or see artifacts?  Sony agrees with you that solid state (not necessaraly the HD) will be the eventual winner, but that will be around 10 years from now.  That was a year ago, so lets say 8 to 9 years from now.  Over 50% of America doesn't have high speed Internet yet, but more than 50% have HDTV, and with 2009 comming fast, with $600HDTV's out now, there will be a LOT more people with HD sets and low(er) bandwitdth.

These are some very good numbers if accurate.  If bluray players & ps3's are outselling the far cheaper hd-dud players then it seems that consumers are smarter than they may think.

It pretty much shows that even if at a lower price, you need the content from franchises and killer movies to sell an HD format.

Why cant the writers at PSU be more precise and specify which region of the world the artikle in mind refer to. This OFTEN irritates me! It causes such big confusions when the article is writen like its about the entire world, when its in reality only about ex. North America... This article obviously isnt about the entire world! Last I hear Sony have sold about 6milion PS3's world wide. Please stop confuse us PSU! Make some kind of system for this;)

2 MILLION ARE FROM PS3!!! HA HA HA HA HA!! That is too funny! What does that say about the format?!!! Let me explain... it's a forced format! Don't get me wrong, I do not want to debate the differences, because it's pointless. What makes the Blu-ray superior?? Let me guess... because it's in your PS3! Ha... that's great! Here's news for those that are clueless... both Blu-ray and HD-DVD support the same resolution. Why is it better NOW? Let me guess... because it has more room? Here's more info for ya... size on the disc does not matter, most studios release multi disc DVD's when all the content can easily fit on one disc. The consumer feels as if they are getting a better deal with two. Even if this was not the case, HD-DVD comes in with a 51 gig disc, Blu-ray stands at 50. Why is Blu-ray better NOW? Let me guess... because more studios support Blu-ray. Let me give you a history lesson... Disney had NO PLANS of releasing movies on DVD years ago, they are so protective of their content they only have titles available for a limited time. I guess the almighty dollar won because last time I looked Disney is making plenty of movies on DVD. My point?? All the studios will release in the winning format (once one has been established), the major reason studios are backing Blu-ray right now is because of the extra DRM layer. Studios do not want you copying their content!! Now why is Blu-ray better? Anyone?? Hop over to Amazon and look for the HD-DVD and Blu-ray chart comparing the differences. What's the Blu-ray benefit???

So, you resort with your ignorant posts here because you're bored with playing with your X360? Or is this just a poor excuse of jealousy?

@XB2B1 ... don't need to. the fact that you state you won't compare bluray and hddvd then go on to do gives you no credibility. but since you asked for it... when talking about storage size always matters, nobody can argue this. try asking your wife if size matters, if you have one. if studios could release movies + extras on a single dvd they would because it would save them millions. a 100gb bluray was recently developed and a 200gb bluray is currently being worked on. and both bluray and hd dvd have drm and both have been cracked so bringing that up was pointless. and i have no idea how disney got in your post. there. you wanted a rebuttal and you got it. and i didn't use wiki because i know this stuff and so does everyone else. go home kid, er, i'm sorry, forgot your 39. still though, go home.

@tom... Disney was used only to make the point that studio support doesn't matter at this point until a format has been agreed upon. Disney never wanted to release on VHS years ago due to concerns the movies would be copied. After deciding to go ahead, they made the decision to release movies for only a limited time. This was true with DVD in the mid 90's as well. Disney was one of the last (if not the last) studio to accept the DVD standard. Disney would do the same today with HD-DVD if the format was chosen to be the standard. So would any studio for that matter! As for size... no it doesn't matter! While Sony is working on 100 gb and higher, so is the competition! The 100 gb Blu-ray may never come to market, it is much more susceptible to scratches rendering it unreadable. Most studios do not use all the space available on a DVD and this trend will continue in the next-gen discs. The disc itself is actually the cheapest part of the product. The packaging, advertising, color inserts, development costs, etc... account for most of a DVD's price. The disc cost pennies, but the advantage of adding another disc to the package greatly increases its value to the customer. Yes the next gen discs probably cost more to manufacture, but that price will come down like everything else. As long as most movies fit on one disc (and they do for both BD and HD), people will be happy... the extras can always be placed on another disc, studios can charge more for the extra content, and consumers feel they got a great deal having the extra disc and content. Yes I have a wife, and I get where you’re going with the size issue. That's the typical response I'd expect to hear from someone defending their position. Size does matter... TO AN EXTENT, and both BD and HD are more than adequate at this point. As for DRM... you thought it was pointless for me to comment on since they've both been cracked, my point was this... studios picked sides BEFORE they were cracked. The thought being that multiple layers of DRM on the BD would prove more difficult to crack than the single layer on HD. HDDVD uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) while BD employs several layers of Digital rights management. This is the main reason studios are supporting BD. The quality will be identical on BD and HD, the codec’s are the same, and the max resolutions are also the same. I have no problem with BD, I'm just laughing at the posts saying that HD stinks and Blu-ray rules, when most of them are clueless about the formats. Personally I can't stand discs... seems as if they always get scratched regardless of the type, CDROM, DVD, CD, HDDVD, BLU-RAY, CDR etc... they all scratch! I'm in favor of one standard, and I wish Sony had joined the DVD forum and agreed on a format instead of using its Playstation to promote its own product. Even Sony agrees! The CEO himself... http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Sony-CEO-Wishes-BluRay-had-Collaborated-with-HD-DVD-89353 HDDVD is not better than BLURAY, BLURAY is not better than HDDVD. They are merely discs with content on them.

@XB2B1 .... Wow. I have to commend you dude. Your post, although very long, was very adult and you didn't even exaggerate or anything distort anything like you usually tend to do. You okay? ^_^ As for the 100GB bluray though hitachi did perfect a version that was approved by Sony for future PS3 games. To be honest though I don't know if the movie industry will use it unless they want to go crazy with extra content, which I doubt, but nevertheless it would be cool. You are wrong about the scratches hindering the bluray though. The major hurdle hitachi had to overcome with the 100GB bluray disc was that since it has 4 layers, it took them awhile to figure how to get the laser to read all the layers without any hardware modifications. They figured it out though and a simple firmware update is necessary to play them. This is the same hurdle they are trying to cross with the 200GB, 8 layer bluray. The only problem I have with HD DVD is that its existence prevents me having a complete hi def movie collection.

@tom... Ha! We seem to be having our own little format war going on here, with probably no one else even knowing! This post has left the front page, and we seem to be the only ones posting here. Ha! You can't tell me that you've never popped in a game or CD only to be frustrated that it no longer reads or has difficulty doing it! Blu-ray is not the only victim here... HD-DVD will have the problem too... it's just the nature of physical discs. I'm not saying it scratches easily, I'm saying that like it or not, it will happen and the more layers, the harder the read! DVD is the same way. Most DVD movies are single layered for that simple reason. Oh well... we can always agree to... disagree!

@XB2B1 ... LoL yah everyones gone. And no i haven't had any of my discs not play ever but that's just I take really really really good care of them. I can't speak for others who have had this issue though. As for the 4 layer bluray just google reading 4 layer bluray and you'll see that hitachi has figured out how to get the standard bluray player to read them. i'm sure hd dvd makers used the same technique to get a standard hd dvd player to read their 3 layer disc as well. Also google ps3 100gb bluray for the article on the 100gb disc hitachi made. developers are already beginning to fill the 25gb discs, udf being the first i think, and there's an article floating around somewhere where Kojima said MGS4 is close to filling a 50gb disc. many people have argued with me that 100gb is overkill and will never be necessary, but the same has been said with CD's so... I just wish MS would have had the hd dvd drive standard in the 360 not for the movies, but for the games. Imagine the types ofgames we could be having.
