Blu-ray has outsold HD-DVD by almost 2-to-1 in the first nine months of the year, but analysts expect additional HD-DVD support and new hit releases to extend the format war.

Home Media Research stated the total U.S. sales of Blu-ray discs, using a Sony-backed technology, and totalled 2.6 million units from Jan. 1 through Sept 30, versus 1.4 million HD-DVD discs sold.

Gerry Kaufhold, analyst with In-Stat research firm, believes that HD-DVD titles with enhanced features will help the HD-DVD camp in the fourth quarter.

Tom Adams, President of Adams Media Research, also stated that the Paramount exclusivity would help HD-DVD in the 4th quarter.

"This definitely smooths out the edge that Blu-ray had in exclusive titles and it very much strengthens HD-DVD's hand in the fourth quarter," he said. Despite all this, he still expects Blu-ray will lead for the year and after.

He believes that for 2007, consumers will spend a total of $186 million purchasing Blu-ray discs, versus $91 million for HD-DVD.

Strange, a title like Transformers didn't seem to be a help for HD DVD.  Blu-ray still outsells it.

i refuse to buy transformers on DVD because of Paramounts sell-out to HD-DVD.  Last week i bought 7 BD movies which doubled my current collection.  BD is going to win the "format war" in my opinion but all us PS3 owners need to show our support by buying more BD movies.

I have never grasped the concept of going out and buying loads of films that you are going to watch once then place it on your neat laminate covered MDF rack to gather dust for the next10 years. Yes i have bought the odd one here and there if they are cheap classics (appart from blu ray versions of pirates of the caribean 1+2) but how many times do you, or can you watch a film? Once maybe twice if its REALLY good, I strugle to find the time to watch 1 film let alone lots, and the money people spent is frightening, i quite often see people in the local store arms full with dvd's or blu rays stacked up to their chins. Do these people not do anything other than sit in front of their TV's? Sorry but from the two blu rays i own i think yes they do look great on a hi def TV but steady on people lets not take out second mortgages just to support a so called format war.

Richkaos - I totally agree with you. I like movies and watch quite a few but unless they are cheap, I never buy them. Even when they are cheap, I dont really buy them. It does not make sense buying Bluray or HD-DVD when for the same money I can hire 10 or more movies from the video shop, or maybe buy 3 DVD movies and watch them upscaled. Or better still go watch it at a mates* place for free... or download it...

If I really really need to see a movie again or let my family see it - I'll rent it at the video shop for $1 maybe I love it soooo much I watch it ten times in the decade ... so OK maybe I'll fork out $10 over the next 10 years. I'll deposit $20 in the bank and the interest of 4.99% will pay the rental cost each year. Guys do yourself a favour - save your money.

The market for purchasing movies at $15 - $20 a pop is very very small.

    * My mates actually borrow their copy from a mate who borrowed it from a mate who borrowed it from a girl who borrowed it from her brother who borrowed it from the store he works at.

    richkaos,

I find it difficult to watch movies over and over again..... by myself. The reaon I have such a library is to enjoy movies with family, freinds, girlfriends and future baby-moma's. I enjoy awesome movies but I also really enjoy introducing awesome movies to other people. Like the first time I showed my uncle  Sha Po Lang or when I showed my friend crank. It is humerous to see peoples expression and get hyped.

See! like the cleaner says,he goes to a mates place to watch movies, that normally means someone has to buy the movies. So, someone has to buy them so they keep making them. They spend millions of dollars on entertainment fare with a garuntee of return.

My guess is that the blu-ray will continue to out sell hd dvd this holiday. I dont think hd dvd will catch up. Also i believe bluray is a much better disc, its got 50gb, which is perfect for games. Didnt ratchet use about 24gb.

So they payed like $150 million for Paramount exclusives and may make $91 million off disc sales for this year.  Sounds like they made a great deal....

    @wolfhawk....fck  ya!

Anyways, this is hilarious. I can't believe this analyst believes that HD DVD will do any better than it has been. Especially with the 40Gb PS3 bundled with Spider Man 3, sales are going crazy right now. With the PS3 dominating in sales right now, and has an even brighter future to look to, Blu Ray is just doin ridiculously good.

I'm with you Blue, I would like to buy Transformers. But, I will not be buying it on DVD or HD-DVD. So, if they want my money, know what they need to do... hit me with the BD baby.

Honestly I thought the ratio over HD-DVD would be bigger, at least 3:1. I suppose it was slow for blu-ray in the first quarter as there were not many PS3's and blu-ray was playing catch-up and gaining momentum and I bet HD-DVD is more successful in US than anywhere else. I hear off blu-ray winning by 5:1and apparently blu-ray is winning in Japan by a ratio of 9:1. If we could see the last 6 months sales I bet it is 3:1 to blu-ray.

People are starting to know about blu-ray's existence, I have mates ask me about it but they don't know of HD-DVD. Just today my one of my mates was talking about having this 42" HDTV and he asked about what 360 plays and what PS3 plays. I told him about HD-DVD and the need of an add-on for 360 and I told him about blu-ray in the PS3. He immediately chose PS3 and mentioned about getting blue planet. My guess is that he already knew something about blu-ray.

I think Toshiba are just gonna cash in on every bit of money as they can before the inevitable end.

well i like to watch movies over and over again. like a game if they are good i will. the thing is...i would much rather spend 20 bucks for a movie then spend at least 50 bucks going to the movie theatre with my wife and listen to babies crying, people on cell phones and explain everything that happens during her inevitable bathroom break. i will just buy it on blu-ray and watch it on my 56" samsung with surrond sound. much better investment....and i don't have to worry about running out to blockbuster or them being out of it. to me.....well worth it.

and yes...introducing movies to others is a great thrill. seeing their face watching it in 1080p on huge big screen and feeling the sound is a great thrill. everyone comes over to my place for movie and game nights.

Personally I think with the rerelease of  Spiderman 1 & 2, and the release of Spiderman 3, And All the Pirates of the Carribean being on blu ray will put blu ray over HD-DVD and keep on going.. My Belief is The studios that went with HD did it due to it was a cheaper format, plus the CEO's etc that decided to go HD didnt have all the facts on blu ray. If all the studios would have gone Blu ray there wouldnt be a format war.

I think what also helped with the sucess of blu ray was Disney going Blu, who makes films for kids (Disney). Also Disney did that 13 state education tour showing people the differences between blu ry and HD.

I watch my movies a lot specially when nothing I like is on the TV. Right now I only own one blu ray and it Pirates Of The Carribean: Curse Of The Black Pearl and let me tell you rom the DVD version to the Blu ray it makes a difference even upconverting the original doesnt look as good as the Blu does.
